Testing the accretion scenario of lambda Boo stars

Our aim is to test the accretion scenario of lambda Boo stars. This model predicts that a binary system with two early-type stars passing through a diffuse cloud should both display the same superficial peculiarity. We carried out a detailed abundance determination of three multiple systems hosting a candidate lambda Boo star: the remarkable triple system HD 15164/65/65C and the binary systems HD 193256/281 and HD 198160/161. The abundance analysis of HD 15164/65/65C shows a clear lambda Boo object (HD 15165) and two objects with near solar composition (HD 15164 and 15165C). Notably, the presence of a lambda Boo star (HD 15165) together with a near solar early-type object (HD 15164) is difficult to explain under the accretion scenario. Also, the solar-like composition derived for the late-type star of the system (HD 15165C) could be used, for the first time, as a proxy for the initial composition of the lambda Boo stars. Then, by reviewing abundance analysis of all known binary systems with candidate lambda Boo stars from literature and including the systems analyzed here, we find no binary/multiple system having two clear "bonafide" lambda Boo stars, as expected from the accretion scenario. The closer candidates to show two lambda Boo-like stars are HD 84948, HD 171948 and HD 198160; however, in our opinion they show mild rather than clear lambda Boo patterns. Our results brings little support to the accretion scenario. Then, there is an urgent need of additional binary and multiple systemsto be analyzed through a detailed abundance analysis.[abridged]

Chemical analysis of early-type stars with planets

Aims. To explore the chemical pattern of early-type stars with planets, searching for a possible signature of planet formation. In particular, we study a likely relation between the lambda Bootis chemical pattern and the presence of giant planets. Methods. We performed a detailed abundance determination in a sample of early-type stars with and without planets via spectral synthesis. Results. We compared the chemical pattern of the stars in our sample (13 stars with planets and 24 stars without detected planets) with those of lambda Bootis and other chemically peculiar stars. We have found four lambda Bootis stars in our sample, two of which present planets and circumstellar disks (HR 8799 and HD 169142) and one without planets detected (HD 110058). We have also identified the first lambda Bootis star orbited by a brown dwarf (zeta Del). This interesting pair lambda Bootis star + brown dwarf could help to test stellar formation scenarios. We found no unique chemical pattern for the group of early-type stars bearing giant planets. However, our results support, in principle, a suggested scenario in which giant planets orbiting pre-main-sequence stars possibly block the dust of the disk and result in a lambda Bootis-like pattern. On the other hand, we do not find a lambda Bootis pattern in different hot-Jupiter planet host stars, which do not support the idea of possible accretion from the winds of hot-Jupiters, recently proposed in the literature. Then, other mechanisms should account for the presence of the lambda Bootis pattern between main-sequence stars. Finally, we suggest that the formation of planets around lambda Bootis stars such as HR 8799 and HD 169142 is also possible through the core accretion process and not only gravitational instability [abridged]

Detecting prolonged activity minima in binary stars. The case of $ζ^{2}$ Ret

Context. It is well known that from 1645 to 1715 solar activity was notably low and the number of sunspots was extremely reduced. This epoch is known as the Maunder Minimum (MM). The study of stars in prolonged activity minima like the MM could help to shed light on this enigmatic epoch. Aims. To explore if the star $ζ^{2}$ Ret, which belongs to a binary system, is in a state similar to the MM. We have collected more than 430 spectra acquired between 2000 and 2019 with the HARPS, REOSC, UVES, and FEROS spectrographs. Methods. We performed a detailed long-term activity study of both components using the Mount Wilson index, which is obtained from the Ca II H\&K lines. To search for signs of an activity cycle, we analyzed the resulting time-series with the Generalized Lomb-Scargle and CLEAN periodograms. Results. Our spectroscopic analysis shows a high activity level for zet01 Ret and a significant decrease in the magnetic activity cycle amplitude of $ζ^{2}$ Ret. Thus, the activity difference between both components has been slightly increased ($Δ$log (RHK) $\sim$0.24 dex), when compared to the previously reported value. The long series analyzed here allowed us to recalculate and constrain the period of $ζ^{2}$ Ret to $\sim$7.9 yr. We also detected a long-term activity cycle of $\sim$4.2 yr in $ζ^{1}$ Ret. Conclusions. By analogy with the scenario that proposes a weak solar cycle during the MM, we suggest that activity signatures showed by $ζ^{2}$ Ret, i.e., a very low activity level when compared to its stellar companion, a notably decreasing amplitude ($\sim$47%), and a cyclic behaviour, are possible evidence that this star could be in a MM state. It is, to our knowledge, the first MM candidate star detected through a highly discrepant activity behaviour in a binary system.

A temperature condensation trend in the debris-disk binary system Zet2 Ret

We explore condensation temperature Tc trends in the unique binary system Zet1 Ret - Zet2 Ret, to determine whether there is a depletion of refractories, which could be related to the planet formation process. The star Zet2 Ret hosts a debris disk which was detected by an IR excess and confirmed by direct imaging and numerical simulations, while Zet1 Ret does not present IR excess nor planets. We carried out a high-precision abundance determination in both components of the binary system via a line-by-line, strictly differential approach. The stellar parameters Teff , log g, [Fe/H] and vturb were determined by imposing differential ionization and excitation equilibrium of Fe I and Fe II lines, with an updated version of the program FUNDPAR. The star Zet1 Ret resulted slightly more metal rich than Zet2 Ret by 0.02 dex. In the differential calculation of Zet1 Ret using Zet2 Ret as reference, the abundances of the refractory elements resulted higher than the volatile elements, and the trend of the refractory elements with Tc showed a positive slope. These facts together show a lack of refractory elements in Zet2 Ret (a debris-disk host) relative to Zet1 Ret. The Tc trend would be in agreement with the proposed signature of planet formation (Melendez et al. 2009) rather than possible Galactic Chemical Evolution or age effects, which are largely diminished here. Then, following the interpretation of Melendez et al. (2009), we propose an scenario in which the refractory elements depleted in Zet2 Ret are possibly locked-up in the rocky material that orbits this star and produce the debris disk observed around this object. We estimated a lower limit of Mrock = 3 Me for the rocky mass of depleted material, which is compatible with a rough estimation of 3-50 Me of a debris disk mass around a solar-type star (Krivov et al. 2008). Discovery of an activity cycle in the solar-analog HD 45184. Exploring Balmer and metallic lines as activity proxy candidates

(Abridged) Most stellar activity cycles similar to that found in the Sun have been detected by using the chromospheric Ca II H&K lines as stellar activity proxies. However, it is unclear if such activity cycles could be identified using other optical lines. Aims. To detect activity cycles in solar-analog stars and determine if these can be identified through other optical lines, such as Fe II and Balmer lines. We study the solar-analog star HD 45184. Methods. We analyse the activity signatures of HD 45184 by using 291 HARPS spectra obtained between 2003 and 2014. In order to search for line-core fluxes variations, we focus on Ca II H&K and Balmer H$α$, H$β$ lines, which are usually used as optical chromospheric activity indicators. We calculate the HARPS-S index from Ca II H&K lines and convert it to the Mount-Wilson scale. In addition, we also consider as activity indicators the equivalent widths of Balmer lines. Moreover, we analyse the possible variability of Fe II and other metallic lines in the optical spectra. Results. We report for the first time a long-term 5.14-yr activity cycle in the solar-analog star HD 45184. This makes HD 45184 one of most similar stars to the Sun with known activity cycle. Such variation is also evident in the first lines of the Balmer series, which not always show a correlation with activity in solar-type stars. Notably, unlike the solar case, we also found that the equivalent widths of the high photospheric Fe II lines (4924 Å, 5018 Å and 5169 Å) are modulated ($\pm$ 2 mÅ) by the chromospheric cycle of the star. From short-term modulation of the S index we calculate a rotational period of 19.98 days, which agrees with its mean chromospheric activity level.

HD 80606: Searching the chemical signature of planet formation

(Abridged) Binary systems with similar components are ideal laboratories which allow several physical processes to be tested, such as the possible chemical pattern imprinted by the planet formation process. Aims. We explore the probable chemical signature of planet formation in the remarkable binary system HD 80606 - HD 80607. The star HD 80606 hosts a giant planet with 4 MJup detected by both transit and radial velocity techniques, being one of the most eccentric planets detected to date. We study condensation temperature Tc trends of volatile and refractory element abundances to determine whether there is a depletion of refractories that could be related to the terrestrial planet formation. Methods. We carried out a high-precision abundance determination in both components of the binary system, using a line-by-line strictly differential approach, using the Sun as a reference and then using HD 80606 as reference. We used an updated version of the program FUNDPAR, together with ATLAS9 model atmospheres and the MOOG code. Conclusions. From the study of Tc trends, we concluded that the stars HD 80606 and HD 80607 do not seem to be depleted in refractory elements, which is different for the case of the Sun. Then, the terrestrial planet formation would have been less efficient in the components of this binary system than in the Sun. The lack of a trend for refractory elements with Tc between both stars implies that the presence of a giant planet do not neccesarily imprint a chemical signature in their host stars, similar to the recent result of Liu et al. (2014). This is also in agreement with Melendez et al. (2009), who suggest that the presence of close-in giant planets might prevent the formation of terrestrial planets. Finally, we speculate about a possible planet around the star HD 80607.

Magnetic properties of Co/Cu/Py antidot films

The magnetic properties of ordered nanoscale Co/Cu/Py multilayer antidot films with different pore sizes prepared on top of nanoporous alumina membranes are presented. By using Co and Py films separated by a Cu thin layer, and tuning the pore diameters of the NAMs we were able to play with the coercivity of the films and observe stepped magnetization curves, as a consequence of the different coercivities of the Co and Py films. The magnetic properties of the multilayer antidots have been measured and compared with results obtained for antidots of Cu/Py. The magnetization reversal process that occurs in each individual layer and in the multilayer was studied by means of micromagnetic simulations.

Moiré patterns on STM images of graphite from surface and subsurface rotated layer

We have observed with STM moiré patterns corresponding to the rotation of one graphene layer on HOPG surface. The moiré patterns were characterized by rotation angle and extension in the plane. Additionally, by identifying border domains and defects we can discriminate between moiré patterns due to rotation on the surface or subsurface layer. For a better understanding of moiré patterns formation we have studied by first principles an array of three graphene layers where the top or the middle layer appears rotated around the stacking axis. We compare the experimental and theoretical results and we show the strong influence of rotations both in surface and subsurface layers for moiré patterns formation in corresponding STM images.
