Measurement of solar neutrino interaction rate below 3.49 MeV in Super-Kamiokande-IV

Super-Kamiokande has observed 8B^{8}\text{B} solar neutrino elastic scattering at recoil electron kinetic energies (EkinE_{kin}) as low as 3.49 MeV to study neutrino flavor conversion within the sun. At SK-observable energies, these conversions are dominated by the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein effect. An upturn in the electron neutrino survival probability in which vacuum neutrino oscillations become dominant is predicted to occur at lower energies, but radioactive background increases exponentially with decreasing energy. New machine learning approaches provide substantial background reduction below 3.49 MeV such that statistical extraction of solar neutrino interactions becomes feasible. This article presents an analysis of the solar neutrino interaction rate at EkinE_{kin} < 3.49 MeV with the full SK-IV period, using data from a wideband intelligent trigger when available and with a boosted decision tree for event selection. A solar neutrino signal is observed between 2.99 MeV < EkinE_{kin} < 3.49 MeV with 2.76σ2.76σ significance and a data to unoscillated MC ratio of 0.307−0.111+0.1120.307^{+0.112}_{-0.111}. This additional low energy data has a negligible effect on the 1σ1σ intervals of the fits to the solar neutrino energy spectrum but has a noticeable effect on the best fit when using the exponential parameterization.

Radium Ion Optical Clock

We report the first operation of a Ra+^{+} optical clock, a promising high-performance clock candidate. The clock uses a single trapped 226^{226}Ra+^{+} ion and operates on the 7s 2S1/2→7s\ ^2S_{1/2}\rightarrow 6d 2D5/26d\ ^2D_{5/2} electric quadrupole transition. By self-referencing three pairs of symmetric Zeeman transitions, we demonstrate a frequency instability of 1.1×10−13\times10^{-13}/τ\sqrtτ, where ττ is the averaging time in seconds. The total systematic uncertainty is evaluated to be Δν/ν=9×10−16{Δν/ ν= 9 \times 10^{-16}}. Using the clock, we realize the first measurement of the ratio of the D5/2D_{5/2} state to the S1/2S_{1/2} state Landé gg-factors: gD/gSg_{D}/g_{S} = 0.5988053(11). A Ra+^{+} optical clock could improve limits on the time variation of the fine structure constant, α˙/α\dot α/ α, in an optical frequency comparison. The ion also has several features that make it a suitable system for a transportable optical clock.

Measurement of the 7p  2 ⁣P3/27p\,\, ^2\!P_{3/2} state branching fractions in Ra+\mathrm{Ra}^+

We report a measurement of the radium ion's 7p  2 ⁣P3/27p\,\, ^2\!P_{3/2} state branching fractions and improved theoretical calculations. With a single laser-cooled 226Ra+^{226}\mathrm{Ra}^+ ion we measure the P3/2P_{3/2} branching fractions to the 7s  2 ⁣S1/27s\,\,^2\!S_{1/2} ground state 0.87678(20), the 6d  2 ⁣D5/26d\,\,^2\!D_{5/2} state 0.10759(10), and the 6d6d 2D3/2{}^{2}D_{3/2} state 0.01563(21).

Optical Mass Spectrometry of Cold RaOH+\mathrm{RaOH}^+ and RaOCH3+{\mathrm{RaOCH}_3}^+

We present an all-optical mass spectrometry technique to identify trapped ions. The new method uses laser-cooled ions to determine the mass of a cotrapped dark ion with a sub-dalton resolution within a few seconds. We apply the method to identify the first controlled synthesis of cold, trapped RaOH+\mathrm{RaOH}^+ and RaOCH3+{\mathrm{RaOCH}_3}^+. These molecules are promising for their sensitivity to time and parity violations that could constrain sources of new physics beyond the standard model. The nondestructive nature of the mass spectrometry technique may help identify molecular ions or highly charged ions prior to optical spectroscopy. Unlike previous mass spectrometry techniques for small ion crystals that rely on scanning, the method uses a Fourier transform which is inherently broadband and comparatively fast. The technique's speed provides new opportunities for studying state-resolved chemical reactions in ion traps.

Measurements of electric quadrupole transition frequencies in 226^{226}Ra+^{+}

We report the first driving of the 7s 2S1/2→6d 2D3/27s\ ^2S_{1/2}\rightarrow 6d\ ^2D_{3/2} and 7s 2S1/2→6d 2D5/27s\ ^2S_{1/2}\rightarrow 6d\ ^2D_{5/2} electric quadrupole (E2) transitions in Ra+^{+}. We measure the frequencies of both E2 transitions, and two other low-lying transitions in 226^{226}Ra+^{+} that are important for controlling the radium ion's motional and internal states: 6d 2D3/2→7p 2P3/206d\ ^2D_{3/2}\rightarrow 7p\ ^2P_{3/2}^{0} and 6d 2D5/2→7p 2P3/206d\ ^2D_{5/2}\rightarrow 7p\ ^2P_{3/2}^{0}.
