Static Cylindrical Symmetric Solutions in the Einstein-Aether Theory

In this work we present all the possible solutions for a static cylindrical symmetric spacetime in the Einstein-Aether (EA) theory. As far as we know, this is the first work in the literature that considers cylindrically symmetric solutions in the theory of EA. One of these solutions is the generalization in EA theory of the Levi-Civita (LC) spacetime in General Relativity (GR) theory. We have shown that this generalized LC solution has unusual geodesic properties, depending on the parameter $c_{14}$ of the aether field. The circular geodesics are the same of the GR theory, no matter the values of $c_{14}$. However, the radial and $z$ direction geodesics are allowed only for certain values of $σ$ and $c_{14}$. The $z$ direction geodesics are restricted to an interval of $σ$ different from those predicted by the GR and the radial geodesics show that the motion is confined between the origin and a maximum radius. The latter is not affected by the aether field but the velocity and acceleration of the test particles are Besides, for $0\leqσ<1/2$, when the cylindrical symmetry is preserved, this spacetime is singular at the axis $r=0$, although for $σ>1/2$ exists interval of $c_{14}$ where the spacetime is not singular, which is completely different from that one obtained with the GR theory, where the axis $r=0$ is always singular.

Existence of New Singularities in Einstein-Aether Theory

How do the global properties of a Lorentzian manifold change when endowed with a vector field? This interesting question is tackled in this paper within the framework of Einstein-Aether (EA) theory which has the most general diffeomorphism-invariant action involving a spacetime metric and a vector field. After classifying all the possible nine vacuum solutions with and without cosmological constant in Friedmann-Lema{\^ı}tre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) cosmology, we show that there exist three singular solutions in the EA theory which are not singular in the General Relativity (GR), all of them for $k=-1$, and another singular solution for $k=1$ in EA theory which does not exist in GR. This result is cross-verified by showing the focusing of timelike geodesics using the Raychaudhuri equation. These new singular solutions show that GR and EA theories can be completely different, even for the FLRW solutions when we go beyond flat geometry ($k=0$). In fact, they have different global structures. In the case where $Λ=0$ ($k=\pm 1$) the vector field defining the preferred direction is the unique source of the curvature.

Stability and gravitational collapse of neutron stars with realistic equations of state

We discuss the stability and construct dynamical configurations describing the gravitational collapse of unstable neutron stars with realistic equations of state compatible with the recent LIGO-Virgo constraints. Unlike other works that consider the collapse of a stellar configuration without a priori knowledge if it is stable or unstable, we first perform a complete analysis on stellar stability for such equations of state. Negative values of the squared frequency of the fundamental mode indicate us radial instability with respect to the collapse of the unstable star to a black hole. We find numerical solutions corresponding to the temporal and radial behavior during the evolution of the collapse for certain relevant physical quantities such as mass, luminosity, energy density, pressure, heat flow, temperature and quantities that describe bulk viscous processes. Our results show that the equation of state undergoes abrupt changes close to the moment of event horizon formation as a consequence of dissipative effects. During the collapse process all energy conditions are respected, which implies that our model is physically acceptable.

Causal thermodynamics of a gravitational collapse model for an anisotropic fluid with dissipative flows

This paper presents a hydrodynamic and thermodynamic treatment of a radiant star model that undergoes a dissipative gravitational collapse, from a certain initial configuration until it becomes a black hole. The collapsing star consists of a locally anisotropic non-perfect fluid, where we explore the consequences of including viscous pressures, both shear and bulk viscosities, as well as radial heat flow. We analyze the temporal evolution of the heat flux, mass function, luminosity perceived by an observer at infinity and the effective surface temperature. It is shown that this simple exact model, satisfying all the energy conditions throughout the interior region of the star and during all the collapse process, provides a physically reasonable behavior for the temperature profile in the context of the extended irreversible thermodynamics.

Geodesics dynamics in the Linet-Tian spacetime with Lambda>0

We analyse the geodesics' dynamics in cylindrically symmetric vacuum spacetimes with Lambda>0 and compare it to the Lambda=0 and Lambda<0 cases. When Lambda>0 there are two singularities in the metric which brings new qualitative features to the dynamics. We find that Lambda=0 planar timelike confined geodesics are unstable against the introduction of a sufficiently large Lambda, in the sense that the bounded orbits become unbounded. In turn, any non-planar radially bounded geodesics are stable for any positive Lambda. We construct global non-singular static vacuum spacetimes in cylindrical symmetry with Lambda>0 by matching the Linet-Tian metric with two appropriate sources.

Shear-free Dust Solution in General Covariant Hořava-Lifshitz Gravity

In this paper, we have studied non stationary dust spherically symmetric spacetime, in general covariant theory ($U(1)$ extension) of the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with the minimally coupling and non-minimum coupling with matter, in the post-newtonian approximation (PPN) in the infrared limit. The Newtonian prepotential $φ$ was assumed null. The aim of this work is to know if we can have the same spacetime, as we know in the General Relativity Theory (GRT), in Hořava-Lifshitz Theory (HLT) in this limit. We have shown that there is not an analogy of the dust solution in HLT with the minimally coupling, as in GRT. Using non-minimum coupling with matter, we have shown that the solution admits a process of gravitational collapse, leaving a singularity at the end. This solution has, qualitatively, the same temporal behaviour as the dust collapse in GRT. However, we have also found a second possible solution, representing a bounce behavior that is not found in GRT.

Geodesics dynamics in the Linet-Tian spacetime with Lambda<0

We investigate the geodesics' kinematics and dynamics in the Linet-Tian metric with Lambda<0 and compare with the results for the Levi-Civita metric, when Lambda=0. This is used to derive new stability results about the geodesics' dynamics in static vacuum cylindrically symmetric spacetimes with respect to the introduction of Lambda<0. In particular, we find that increasing |Lambda| always increases the minimum and maximum radial distances to the axis of any spatially confined planar null geodesic. Furthermore, we show that, in some cases, the inclusion of any Lambda<0 breaks the geodesics' orbit confinement of the Lambda=0 metric, for both planar and non-planar null geodesics, which are therefore unstable. Using the full system of geodesics' equations, we provide numerical examples which illustrate our results.

Gravitational Collapse of an Imperfect Non Adiabatic Fluid

We study the evolution of an anisotropic shear-free fluid with heat flux and kinematic self-similarity of the second kind. We found a class of solution to the Einstein field equations by assuming that the part of the tangential pressure which is explicitly time dependent of the fluid is zero and that the fluid moves along time-like geodesics. The energy conditions, geometrical and physical properties of the solutions are studied. The energy conditions are all satisfied at the beginning of the collapse but when the system approaches the singularity the energy conditions are violated, allowing for the appearance of an attractive phantom energy. We have found that, depending on the self-similar parameter $α$ and the geometrical radius, they may represent a naked singularity. We speculate that the apparent horizon disappears due to the emergence of exotic energy at the end of the collapse, or due to the characteristics of null acceleration systems as shown by recent work.

Vaidya Solution in General Covariant Hořava-Lifshitz Gravity with the Minimum Coupling and without Projectability: Infrared Limit

In this paper, we have studied nonstationary radiative spherically symmetric spacetime, in general covariant theory ($U(1)$ extension) of {the} Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with the minimum coupling, in the post-newtonian approximation (PPN), without the projectability condition and in the infrared limit. The Newtonian prepotential $φ$ was assumed null. We have shown that there is not the analogue of the Vaidya's solution in the Hořava-Lifshitz Theory (HLT) with the minimum coupling, as we know in the General Relativity Theory (GRT).

Vaidya Solutions in General Covariant Hořava-Lifshitz Gravity without Projectability: Infrared Limit

In this paper, we have studied nonstationary radiative spherically symmetric spacetime, in general covariant theory ($U(1)$ extension) of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity without the projectability condition and in the infrared limit. The Newtonian prepotential $φ$ was assumed null. We have shown that there is not the analogue of the Vaidya's solution in the Hořava-Lifshitz Theory (HLT), as we know in the General Relativity Theory (GRT). Therefore, we conclude that the gauge field $A$ should interact with the null radiation field of the Vaidya's spacetime in the HLT.

Charged Gravastar in a Dark Energy Universe

Here we constructed a charged gravastar model formed by an interior de Sitter spacetime, a charged dynamical infinitely thin shell with an equation of state and an exterior de Sitter-Reissner-Nordström spacetime. We find that the presence of the charge is crucial to the stability of these structures. It can as much favor the stability of a bounded excursion gravastar, and still converting it in a stable gravastar, as make disappear a stable gravastar, depending on the range of the charge considered. There is also formation of black holes and, above certain values, the presence of the charge allows the formation of naked singularity . This is an important example in which a naked singularity emerges as a consequence of unstabilities of a gravastar model, which reinforces that gravastar is not an alternative model to black hole.

Conformally flat sources for the Linet-Tian spacetime

We investigate the matching, across cylindrical surfaces, of static cylindrically symmetric conformally flat spacetimes with a cosmological constant $Λ$, satisfying regularity conditions at the axis, to an exterior Linet-Tian spacetime. We prove that for $Λ\leq 0$ such matching is impossible. On the other hand, we show through simple examples that the matching is possible for $Λ>0$. We suggest a physical argument that might explain these results.

Dynamical Evolution of an Unstable Gravastar with Zero Mass

Using the conventional gravastar model, that is, an object constituted by two components where one of them is a massive infinitely thin shell and the other one is a de Sitter interior spacetime, we physically interpret a solution characterized by a zero Schwarzschild mass. No stable gravastar is formed and it collapses without forming an event horizon, originating what we call a massive non-gravitational object. The most surprise here is that the collapse occurs with an exterior de Sitter vacuum spacetime. This creates an object which does not interact gravitationally with an outside test particle and it may evolve to a point-like topological defect.

Gravastars and Black Holes of Anisotropic Dark Energy

Dynamical models of prototype gravastars made of anisotropic dark energy are constructed, in which an infinitely thin spherical shell of a perfect fluid with the equation of state $p = (1-γ)σ$ divides the whole spacetime into two regions, the internal region filled with a dark energy fluid, and the external Schwarzschild region. The models represent "bounded excursion" stable gravastars, where the thin shell is oscillating between two finite radii, while in other cases they collapse until the formation of black holes. Here we show, for the first time in the literature, a model of gravastar and formation of black hole with both interior and thin shell constituted exclusively of dark energy. Besides, the sign of the parameter of anisotropy ($p_t - p_r$) seems to be relevant to the gravastar formation. The formation is favored when the tangential pressure is greater than the radial pressure, at least in the neighborhood of the isotropic case ($ω=-1$).

Gravastars with an Interior Dark Energy Fluid Forming a Naked Singularity

We consider a gravastar model made of anisotropic dark energy with an infinitely thin spherical shell of a perfect fluid with the equation of state $p = (1-γ)σ$ with an external de Sitter-Schwarzschild region. It is found that in some cases the models represent the "bounded excursion" stable gravastars, where the thin shell is oscillating between two finite radii, while in other cases they collapse until the formation of black holes or naked singularities. An interesting result is that we can have black hole and stable gravastar formation even with an interior and a shell cons tituted of dark and repulsive dark energy, as also shown in previous work. Besides, in one case we have a dynamical evolution to a black hole (for $Λ=0$) or to a naked singularity (for $Λ> 0$). This is the first time in the literature that a naked singularity emerges from a gravastar model.

Gravastars with Dark Energy Evolving to Naked Singularity

We consider a gravastar model made of anisotropic dark energy with an infinitely thin spherical shell of a perfect fluid with the equation of state $p = (1-γ)σ$ with an external de Sitter-Schwarzschild region. It is found that in some cases the models represent the "bounded excursion" stable gravastars, where the thin shell is oscillating between two finite radii, while in other cases they collapse until the formation of black holes or naked singularities. An interesting result is that we can have black hole and stable gravastar formation even with an interior and a shell constituted of dark and repulsive dark energy, as also shown in previous work. Besides, in three cases we have a dynamical evolution to a black hole (for $Λ=0$) or to a naked singularity (for $Λ> 0$). This is the first time in the literature that a naked singularity emerges from a gravastar model.

Radiating Gravastars

Considering a Vaidya exterior spacetime, we study dynamical models of prototype gravastars, made of an infinitely thin spherical shell of a perfect fluid with the equation of state $p = σ$, enclosing an interior de Sitter spacetime. We show explicitly that the final output can be a black hole, an unstable gravastar, a stable gravastar or a "bounded excursion" gravastar, depending on how the mass of the shell evolves in time, the cosmological constant and the initial position of the dynamical shell. This work presents, for the first time in the literature, a gravastar that emits radiation.

Gravitational Collapse of Phantom Fluid in (2+1)-Dimensions

This investigation is devoted to the solutions of Einstein's field equations for a circularly symmetric anisotropic fluid, with kinematic self-similarity of the first kind, in $(2+1)$-dimensional spacetimes. In the case where the radial pressure vanishes, we show that there exists a solution of the equations that represents the gravitational collapse of an anisotropic fluid, and this collapse will eventually form a black hole, even when it is constituted by the phantom energy.

How the Charge Can Affect the Formation of Gravastars

In recent work we physically interpreted a special gravastar solution characterized by a zero Schwarzschild mass. In fact, in that case, none gravastar was formed and the shell expanded, leaving behind a de Sitter or a Minkowski spacetime, or collapsed without forming an event horizon, originating what we called a massive non-gravitational object. This object has two components of non zero mass but the exterior spacetime is Minkowski or de Sitter. One of the component is a massive thin shell and the other one is de Sitter spacetime inside. The total mass of this object is zero Schwarzschild mass, which characterizes an exterior vacuum spacetime. Here, we extend this study to the case where we have a charged shell. Now, the exterior is a Reissner-Nordström spacetime and, depending on the parameter $ω=1-γ$ of the equation of state of the shell, and the charge, a gravastar structure can be formed. We have found that the presence of the charge contributes to the stability of the gravastar, if the charge is greater than a critical value. Otherwise, a massive non-gravitational object is formed for small charges.

Dressing a Naked Singularity: an Example

Considering the evolution of a perfect fluid with self-similarity of the second kind, we have found that an initial naked singularity can be trapped by an event horizon due to collapsing matter. The fluid moves along time-like geodesics with a self-similar parameter $α= -3$. Since the metric obtained is not asymptotically flat, we match the spacetime of the fluid with a Schwarzschild spacetime. All the energy conditions are fulfilled until the naked singularity.

How the Cosmological Constant Affects Gravastar Formation

Here we generalized a previous model of gravastar consisted of an internal de Sitter spacetime, a dynamical infinitely thin shell with an equation of state, but now we consider an external de Sitter-Schwarzschild spacetime. We have shown explicitly that the final output can be a black hole, a "bounded excursion" stable gravastar, a stable gravastar, or a de Sitter spacetime, depending on the total mass of the system, the cosmological constants, the equation of state of the thin shell and the initial position of the dynamical shell. We have found that the exterior cosmological constant imposes a limit to the gravastar formation, i.e., the exterior cosmological constant must be smaller than the interior cosmological constant. Besides, we have also shown that, in the particular case where the Schwarzschild mass vanishes, no stable gravastar can be formed, but we still have formation of black hole.

Stable Gravastars of Anisotropic Dark Energy

Dynamical models of prototype gravastars made of phantom energy are constructed, in which an infinitely thin spherical shell of a perfect fluid with the equation of state $p = (1-γ)σ$ divides the whole spacetime into two regions, the internal region filled with a dark energy (or phantom) fluid, and the external Schwarzschild region. It is found that in some cases the models represent the "bounded excursion" stable gravastars, where the thin shell is oscillating between two finite radii, while in other cases they collapse until the formation of black holes or normal stars. In the phase space, the region for the "bounded excursion" gravastars is very small in comparison to that of black holes, but not empty, as found in our previous papers. Therefore, although the existence of gravastars can not be completely excluded from current analysis, the opposite is not possible either, that is, even if gravastars exist, they do not exclude the existence of black holes.

On Anisotropic Dark Energy

Since the discovery of the accelerated expansion of the universe, it was necessary to introduce a new component of matter distribution called dark energy. The standard cosmological model considers isotropy of the pressure and assumes an equation of state $p=ωρ$, relating the pressure $p$ and the energy density $ρ$. The interval of the parameter $ω$ defines the kind of matter of the universe, related to the fulfillment, or not, of the energy conditions of the fluid. The recent interest in this kind of fluid with anisotropic pressure, in the scenario of the gravitational collapse and star formation, imposes a carefull analysis of the energy conditions and the role of the components of the pressure. Here, in this work, we show an example where the classification of dark energy for isotropic pressure fluids is used incorrectly for anisotropic fluids. The correct classification and its consequences are presented.

Star Models with Dark Energy

We have constructed star models consisting of four parts: (i) a homogeneous inner core with anisotropic pressure (ii) an infinitesimal thin shell separating the core and the envelope; (iii) an envelope of inhomogeneous density and isotropic pressure; (iv) an infinitesimal thin shell matching the envelope boundary and the exterior Schwarzschild spacetime. We have analyzed all the energy conditions for the core, envelope and the two thin shells. We have found that, in order to have static solutions, at least one of the regions must be constituted by dark energy. The results show that there is no physical reason to have a superior limit for the mass of these objects but for the ratio of mass and radius.

Perturbed Self-Similar Massless Scalar Field in the Spacetimes with Circular Symmetry in 2+1 Gravity

We present in this work the study of the linear perturbations of the 2+1-dimensional circularly symmetric solution, obtained in a previous work, with kinematic self-similarity of the second kind. We have obtained an exact solution for the perturbation equations and the possible perturbation modes. We have shown that the background solution is a stable solution.

Levi-Civita Solutions Coupled with Electromagnetic Fields

The local and global properties of the Levi-Civita (LC) solutions coupled with an electromagnetic field are studied and some limits to the vacuum LC solutions are given. By doing such limits, the physical and geometrical interpretations of the free parameters involved in the solutions are made clear. Sources for both the LC vacuum solutions and the LC solutions coupled with an electromagnetic field are studied, and in particular it is found that all the LC vacuum solutions with $σ\ge 0$ can be produced by cylindrically symmetric thin shells that satisfy all the energy conditions, weak, dominant, and strong. When the electromagnetic field is present, the situation changes dramatically. In the case of a purely magnetic field, all the solutions with $σ\ge 1/\sqrt{8}$ or $σ\le - 1/\sqrt{8}$ can be produced by physically acceptable cylindrical thin shells, while in the case of a purely electric field, no such shells are found for any value of $σ$.

On the parameters of Lewis metric for the Lewis class

The physical and geometrical meaning of the four parameters of Lewis metric for the Lewis class are investigated. Matching this spacetime to a completely anisotropic, rigidly rotating, fluid cylinder, we obtain from the junction conditions that the four parameters are related to the vorticity of the source. Furthermore it is shown that one of the parameters must vanish if one wishes to reduce the Lewis class to a locally static spacetime. Using the Cartan scalars it is shown that the Lewis class does not include globally Minkowski as special class, and that it is not locally equivalent to the Levi-Civita metric. Also it is shown that, in contrast with the Weyl class, the parameter responsible for the vorticity appears explicitly in the expression for the Cartan scalars. Finally, to enhance our understanding of the Lewis class, we analyse the van Stockum metric.

preprint1996arXiv

On the parameters of Lewis metric for the Weyl class

We provide physical interpretation for the four parameters of the stationary Lewis metric restricted to the Weyl class. Matching this spacetime to a completely anisotropic, rigidly rotating, fluid cilinder, we obtain from the junction conditions that one of these parameters is proportional to the vorticity of the source. From the Newtonian approximation a second parameter is found to be proportional to the energy per unit of length. The remaining two parameters may be associated to a gravitational analog of the Aharanov-Bohm effect. We prove, using the Cartan scalars, that the Weyl class metric and static Levi-Civita metric are locally equivalent, i.e., indistinguishable in terms of its curvature.
