Temperature Screening and Cross-Field Impurity Accumulation from a Thermodynamic Perspective

In a variety of different systems, high-Z ion species show a marked tendency to accumulate in regions of high plasma density. It has previously been suggested that the apparent universality of this behavior could be explained thermodynamically, in terms of the maximum-entropy state attainable when the system must obey an ambipolarity condition. However, the previous treatment did not allow for the possibility of temperature gradients. Here, tools from non-equilibrium (Onsager) thermodynamics are used to show that ambipolarity continues to play a key role in producing this behavior in the presence of temperature gradients, and to recover well-known temperature screening effects that appear in these cases.

Velocity space compression from Fermi acceleration with Lorentz scattering

The Fermi acceleration model was introduced to describe how cosmic ray particles are accelerated to great speeds by interacting with moving magnetic fields. We identify a new variation of the model where light ions interact with a moving wall while undergoing pitch angle scattering through Coulomb collisions due to the presence of a heavier ionic species. The collisions introduce a stochastic component which adds complexity to the particle acceleration profile and sets it apart from collisionless Fermi acceleration models. The unusual effect captured by this simplified variation of Fermi acceleration is the non-conservation of phase space, with the possibility for a distribution of particles initially monotonically decreasing in energy to exhibit an energy peak upon compression. A peaked energy distribution might have interesting applications, such as to optimize fusion reactivity or to characterize astrophysical phenomena that exhibit non-thermal features.

Heat Pump via Charge Incompressibility in a Collisional Magnetized Multi-Ion Plasma

Stratification due to ion-ion friction in a magnetized multiple-ion species plasma is shown to be accompanied by a heat pump effect, identified for the first time here, transferring heat from one ion species to another as well as from one region of space to another. The heat pump is produced via newly identified heating mechanisms associated with charge incompressibility and the Ettingshausen effect. Besides their academic interest, these new effects may have useful applications to plasma technologies that involve rotation or compression.

Maximum-Entropy States for Magnetized Ion Transport

For a plasma with fixed total energy, number of particles, and momentum, the distribution function that maximizes entropy is a Boltzmann distribution. If, in addition, the rearrangement of charge is constrained, as happens on ion-ion collisional timescales for cross-field multiple-species transport, the maximum-entropy state is instead given by the classic impurity pinch relation. The maximum-entropy derivation, unlike previous approaches, does not rely on the details of the collision operator, only on the presence of certain conservation properties.
