Determination of polariton condensates' critical temperature

We investigate the thermal robustness of traveling polariton condensates. We create remote condensates that have never been in contact, and study their interference in momentum space, when they travel with the same velocity, by means of time-resolved photoluminescence. We determine the condensed to thermal, uncondensed polariton fraction, which shows a gradual decay with increasing temperature, and obtain the critical temperature for the Bose-Einstein-like condensate (BEC) phase transition. We tentatively compare our experimental findings with theoretical models, developed for atomic condensates, to describe the condensates' coherence fading with temperature.

Impact of the energetic landscape on polariton condensates propagation along a coupler

Polariton condensates propagation is strongly dependent on the particular energy landscape the particles are moving upon, in which the geometry of the pathway laid for their movement plays a crucial role. Bends in the circuits trajectories affect the condensates speed and oblique geometries introduce an additional discretization of the polaritons momenta due to the mixing of short and long axis wavevectors on the propagating eigenvalues. In this work, we study the nature of the propagation of condensates along the arms of a polariton coupler, by a combination of time-resolved micro-tomography measurements and a theoretical model based on a mean field approximation where condensed polaritons are described by an equation for the slow varying amplitude of the polariton field coupled to an equation for the density of incoherent excitons.

Propagative oscillations in co-directional polariton waveguide couplers

We report on novel exciton-polariton routing devices created to study and purposely guide light-matter particles in their condensate phase. In a co-directional coupling device, two waveguides are connected by a partially etched section which facilitates tunable coupling of the adjacent channels. This evanescent coupling of the two macroscopic wavefunctions in each waveguide reveals itself in real space oscillations of the condensate. This Josephson-like oscillation has only been observed in coupled polariton traps so far. Here, we report on a similar coupling behavior in a controllable, propagative waveguide-based design. By controlling the gap width, channel length or the propagation energy, the exit port of the polariton flow can be chosen. This co-directional polariton device is a passive and scalable coupler element that can serve in compact, next generation logic architectures.

Temperature dependence of the coherence in polariton condensates

We present a time-resolved experimental study of the temperature effect on the coherence of traveling polariton condensates. The simultaneous detection of their emission both in real- and reciprocal-space allows us to fully monitor the condensates' dynamics. We obtain fringes in reciprocal-space as a result of the interference between polariton wavepackets (WPs) traveling with the same speed. The periodicity of these fringes is inversely proportional to the spatial distance between the interfering WPs. In a similar fashion, we obtain interference fringes in real-space when WPs traveling in opposite directions meet. The visibility of both real- and reciprocal-space interference fringes rapidly decreases with increasing temperature and vanishes. A theoretical description of the phase transition, considering the coexistence of condensed and non-condensed particles, for an out of equilibrium condensate such as ours is still missing. Yet a comparison with theories developed for atomic condensates allows us to infer a critical temperature for the BEC-like transition when the visibility goes to zero.

Optical control of spin textures in quasi-one-dimensional polariton condensates

We investigate, through polarization-resolved spectroscopy, the spin transport by propagating polariton condensates in a quasi one-dimensional microcavity ridge along macroscopic distances. Under circularly polarized, continuous-wave, non-resonant excitation, a sinusoidal precession of the spin in real space is observed, whose phase depends on the emission energy. The experiments are compared with simulations of the spinor-polariton condensate dynamics based on a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation, modified to account for incoherent pumping, decay and energy relaxation within the condensate.

Spin Selective Filtering of Polariton Condensate Flow

Spin-selective spatial filtering of propagating polariton condensates, using a controllable spin-dependent gating barrier, in a one-dimensional semiconductor microcavity ridge waveguide is reported. A nonresonant laser beam provides the source of propagating polaritons while a second circularly polarized weak beam imprints a spin dependent potential barrier, which gates the polariton flow and generates polariton spin currents. A complete spin-based control over the blocked and transmitted polaritons is obtained by varying the gate polarization.

Ignition and formation dynamics of a polariton condensate on a semiconductor microcavity pillar

We present an experimental study on the ignition and decay of a polariton optical parametric oscillator (OPO) in a semiconductor microcavity pillar. The combination of a continuous wave laser pump, under quasi-phase matching conditions, and a non-resonant, 2 ps-long pulse probe allows us to obtain the full dynamics of the system. The arrival of the probe induces a blue-shift in the polariton emission, bringing the OPO process into resonance with the pump, which triggers the OPO-process. We time-resolve the polariton OPO signal emission for more than 1 nanosecond in both real and momentum-space. We fully characterize the emission of the OPO signal with spectral tomography techniques. Our interpretations are backed up by theoretical simulations based on the 2D coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equation for excitons and photons.

Operation speed of polariton condensate switches gated by excitons

We present a time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) study in real- and momentum-space of a polariton condensate switch in a quasi-1D semiconductor microcavity. The polariton flow across the ridge is gated by excitons inducing a barrier potential due to repulsive interactions. A study of the device operation dependence on the power of the pulsed gate beam obtains a satisfactory compromise for the ON/OFF-signal ratio and -switching time of the order of 0.3 and $\thicksim50$ ps, respectively. The opposite transition is governed by the long-lived gate excitons, consequently the OFF/ON-switching time is $\thicksim200$ ps, limiting the overall operation speed of the device to $\thicksim3$ GHz. The experimental results are compared to numerical simulations based on a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation, taking into account incoherent pumping, decay and energy relaxation within the condensate.

Quantum coherence in momentum space of light-matter condensates

We show that the use of momentum-space optical interferometry, which avoids any spatial overlap between two parts of a macroscopic quantum state, presents a unique way to study coherence phenomena in polariton condensates. In this way, we address the longstanding question in quantum mechanics: "\emph{Do two components of a condensate, which have never seen each other, possess a definitive phase?}" [P. W. Anderson, \emph{Basic Notions of Condensed Matter Physics} (Benjamin, 1984)]. A positive answer to this question is experimentally obtained here for light-matter condensates, created under precise symmetry conditions, in semiconductor microcavities taking advantage of the direct relation between the angle of emission and the in-plane momentum of polaritons.

Energy relaxation of exciton-polariton condensates in quasi-1D microcavities

We present a time-resolved study of energy relaxation and trapping dynamics of polariton condensates in a semiconductor microcavity ridge. The combination of two non-resonant, pulsed laser sources in a GaAs ridge-shaped microcavity gives rise to profuse quantum phenomena where the repulsive potentials created by the lasers allow the modulation and control of the polariton flow. We analyze in detail the dependence of the dynamics on the power of both lasers and determine the optimum conditions for realizing an all-optical polariton condensate transistor switch. The experimental results are interpreted in the light of simulations based on a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation, including incoherent pumping, decay and energy relaxation within the condensate.

Quantum reflections and the shunting of polariton condensate wave trains: implementation of a logic AND gate

We study the dynamics of polariton condensate wave trains that propagate along a quasi one-dimensional waveguide. Through the application of tuneable potential barriers the propagation can be reflected and multiple reflections used to confine and store a propagating state. Energy-relaxation processes allow the delayed relaxation into a long-living coherent ground state. Aside the potential routing of polariton condensate signals, the system forms an AND-type logic gate compatible with incoherent inputs.
