Supergravity Black Holes, Love Numbers and Harmonic Coordinates

To perform realistic tests of theories of gravity, we need to be able to look beyond general relativity and evaluate the consistency of alternative theories with observational data from, especially, gravitational wave detections using, for example, an agnostic Bayesian approach. In this paper we further examine properties of one class of such viable, alternative theories, based on metrics arising from ungauged supergravity. In particular, we examine the massless, neutral, minimally coupled scalar wave equation in a general stationary, axisymmetric background metric such as that of a charged rotating black hole, when the scalar field is either time independent or in the low-frequency, near-zone limit, with a view to calculating the Love numbers of tidal perturbations, and of obtaining harmonic coordinates for the background metric. For a four-parameter family of charged asymptotically flat rotating black hole solutions of ungauged supergravity theory known as STU black holes, which includes Kaluza-Klein black holes and the Kerr-Sen black hole as special cases, we find that all time-independent solutions, and hence the harmonic coordinates of the metrics, are identical to those of the Kerr solution. In the low-frequency limit we find the scalar fields exhibit the same $SL(2,R)$ symmetry as holds in the case of the Kerr solution. We point out extensions of our results to a wider class of metrics, which includes solutions of Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory.

Gaussian Null Coordinates for Rotating Charged Black Holes and Conserved Charges

Motivated by the study of conserved Aretakis charges for a scalar field on the horizon of an extremal black hole, we construct the metrics for certain classes of four-dimensional and five-dimensional extremal rotating black holes in Gaussian null coordinates. We obtain these as expansions in powers of the radial coordinate, up to sufficient order to be able to compute the Aretakis charges. The metrics we consider are for 4-charge black holes in four-dimensional STU supergravity (including the Kerr-Newman black hole in the equal-charge case) and the general 3-charge black holes in five-dimensional STU supergravity. We also investigate the circumstances under which the Aretakis charges of an extremal black hole can be mapped by conformal inversion of the metric into Newman-Penrose charges at null infinity. We show that while this works for four-dimensional static black holes, a simple radial inversion fails in rotating cases because a necessary conformal symmetry of the massless scalar equation breaks down. We also discuss that a massless scalar field in dimensions higher than four does not have any conserved Newman-Penrose charge, even in a static asymptotically flat spacetime.

Positive Energy Functional for Massless Scalars in Rotating Black Hole Backgrounds of Maximal Ungauged Supergravity

We outline a proof of the stability of a massless neutral scalar field $ψ$ in the background of a wide class of four dimensional asymptotically flat rotating and ``electrically charged'' solutions of supergravity, and the low energy limit of string theory, known as STU metrics. Despite their complexity, we find it possible to circumvent the difficulties presented by the existence of ergo-regions and the related phenomenon of super-radiance in the original metrics by following a strategy due to Whiting, and passing to an auxiliary metric admitting an everywhere lightlike Killing field and constructing a scalar field $Ψ$ (related to a possible unstable mode $ψ$ by a non-local transformation) which satisfies the massless wave equation with respect to the auxiliary metric. By contrast with the case for $ψ$, the associated energy density of $Ψ$ is not only conserved but is also non-negative.

Rotating Solutions in Critical Lovelock Gravities

For appropriate choices of the coupling constants, the equations of motion of Lovelock gravities up to order n in the Riemann tensor can be factorized such that the theories admits a single (A)dS vacuum. In this paper we construct two classes of exact rotating metrics in such critical Lovelock gravities of order n in d=2n+1 dimensions. In one class, the n angular momenta in the n orthogonal spatial 2-planes are equal, and hence the metric is of cohomogeneity one. We construct these metrics in a Kerr-Schild form, but they can then be recast in terms of Boyer-Lindquist coordinates. The other class involves metrics with only a single non-vanishing angular momentum. Again we construct them in a Kerr-Schild form, but in this case it does not seem to be possible to recast them in Boyer-Lindquist form. Both classes of solutions have naked curvature singularities, arising because of the over rotation of the configurations.

On the decoupling of heavy states in higher-derivative supersymmetric field theories

We study the problem of decoupling of heavy chiral superfields in four-dimensional $N=1$ supersymmetric field theories with Lorentz-invariant and Lorentz-violating higher-derivative terms. We demonstrate that the earlier found effect of large logarithmic quantum corrections, due to heavy chiral superfields, takes place not only if the theory possesses quantum divergences, but also for essentially finite theories involving higher derivative terms, both Lorentz-invariant and Lorentz-breaking ones.

Quasi-Normal Modes for Subtracted Rotating and Magnetised Geometries

We obtain explicit separable solutions of the wave equation of massless minimally coupled scalar fields in the subtracted geometry of four-dimensional rotating and Melvin (magnetised) four-charge black holes of the STU model, a consistent truncation of maximally supersymmetric supergravity with four types of electromagnetic fields. These backgrounds possess a hidden SL(2,R) x SL(2,R) x SO(3) symmetry and faithfully model the near horizon geometry of these black holes, but locate them in a confining asymptotically conical box. For each subtracted geometry we obtain two branches of quasi-normal modes, given in terms of hypergeometric functions and spherical harmonics. One branch is over-damped and the other under-damped and they exhibit rotational splitting. No black hole bomb is possible because the Killing field which co-rotates with the horizon is everywhere timelike outside the black hole. A five-dimensional lift of these geometries is given locally by the product of a BTZ black hole with a two-sphere. This allows an explicit analysis of the minimally coupled massive five-dimensional scalar field. Again, there are two branches, both damped, however now their oscillatory parts are shifted by the quantised wave number $k$ along the fifth circle direction.

Super-Geometrodynamics

We present explicit solutions of the time-symmetric initial value constraints, expressed in terms of freely specfiable harmonic functions for examples of supergravity theories, which emerge as effective theories of compactified string theory. These results are a prequisite for the study of the time-evolution of topologically non-trivial initial data for supergravity theories, thus generalising the "Geometrodynamics" program of Einstein-Maxwell theory to that of supergravity theories. Specifically, we focus on examples of multiple electric Maxwell and scalar fields, and analyse the initial data problem for the general Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory both with one and two Maxwell fields, and the STU model. The solutions are given in terms of up to eight arbitrary harmonic functions in the STU model. As a by-product, in order compare our results with known static solutions, the metric in isotropic coordinates and all the sources of the non-extremal black holes are expressed entirely in terms of harmonic functions. We also comment on generalizations to time-nonsymmetric initial data and their relation to cosmological solutions of gauged so-called fake supergravities with positive cosmological constant.

Electrodynamics of Black Holes in STU Supergravity

External magnetic fields can probe the composite structure of black holes in string theory. With this motivation we study magnetised four-charge black holes in the STU model, a consistent truncation of maximally supersymmetric supergravity with four types of electromagnetic fields. We employ solution generating techniques to obtain Melvin backgrounds, and black holes in these backgrounds. For an initially electrically charged static black hole immersed in magnetic fields, we calculate the resultant angular momenta and analyse their global structure. Examples are given for which the ergoregion does not extend to infinity. We calculate magnetic moments and gyromagnetic ratios via Larmor's formula. Our results are consistent with earlier special cases. A scaling limit and associated subtracted geometry in a single surviving magnetic field is shown to lift to $AdS_3\times S^2$. Magnetizing magnetically charged black holes give static solutions with conical singularities representing strings or struts holding the black holes against magnetic forces. In some cases it is possible to balance these magnetic forces.

Entropy-Product Rules for Charged Rotating Black Holes

We study the universal nature of the product of the entropies of all horizons of charged rotating black holes. We argue, by examining further explicit examples, that when the maximum number of rotations and/or charges are turned on, the entropy product is expressed in terms of angular momentum and/or charges only, which are quantized. (In the case of gauged supergravities, the entropy product depends on the gauge-coupling constant also.) In two-derivative gravities, the notion of the "maximum number" of charges can be defined as being sufficiently many non-zero charges that the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole arises under an appropriate specialisation of the charges. (The definition can be relaxed somewhat in charged AdS black holes in $D\ge 6$.) In higher-derivative gravity, we use the charged rotating black hole in Weyl-Maxwell gravity as an example for which the entropy product is still quantized, but it is expressed in terms of the angular momentum only, with no dependence on the charge. This suggests that the notion of maximum charges in higher-derivative gravities requires further understanding.

Exact quasi-normal modes for the near horizon Kerr metric

We study the quasi-normal modes of a massless scalar field in a general sub-extreme Kerr back- ground by exploiting the hidden SL(2, R) x SL(2, R) x SO(3) symmetry of the subtracted geometry approximation. This faithfully models the near horizon geometry but locates the black hole in a confining asymptotically conical box analogous to the anti-de-Sitter backgrounds used in string the- ory. There are just two series of modes, given in terms of hypergeometric functions and spherical harmonics, reminiscent of the left-moving and right-moving degrees in string theory: one is over- damped, the other is underdamped and exhibits rotational splitting. The remarkably simple exact formulae for the complex frequencies would in principle allow the determination of the mass and angular momentum from observations of a black hole. No black hole bomb is possible because the Killing field which co-rotates with the horizon is everywhere timelike outside the black hole.

Conformal Symmetry of a Black Hole as a Scaling Limit: A Black Hole in an Asymptotically Conical Box

We show that the previously obtained subtracted geometry of four-dimensional asymptotically flat multi-charged rotating black holes, whose massless wave equation exhibit $SL(2,\R) \times SL(2,\R) \times SO(3)$ symmetry may be obtained by a suitable scaling limit of certain asymptotically flat multi-charged rotating black holes, which is reminiscent of near-extreme black holes in the dilute gas approximation. The co-homogeneity-two geometry is supported by a dilation field and two (electric) gauge-field strengths. We also point out that these subtracted geometries can be obtained as a particular Harrison transformation of the original black holes. Furthermore the subtracted metrics are asymptotically conical (AC), like global monopoles, thus describing "a black hole in an AC box". Finally we account for the the emergence of the $SL(2,\R) \times SL(2,\R) \times SO(3)$ symmetry as a consequence of the subtracted metrics being Kaluza-Klein type quotients of $ AdS_3\times 4 S^3$. We demonstrate that similar properties hold for five-dimensional black holes.

Graphene and the Zermelo Optical Metric of the BTZ Black Hole

It is well known that the low energy electron excitations of the curved graphene sheet $Σ$ are solutions of the massless Dirac equation on a 2+1 dimensional ultra-static metric on ${\Bbb R} \times Σ$. An externally applied electric field on the graphene sheet induces a gauge potential which could be mimicked by considering a stationary optical metric of the Zermelo form, which is conformal to the BTZ black hole when the sheet has a constant negative curvature. The Randers form of the metric can model a magnetic field, which is related by a boost to an electric one in the Zermelo frame. We also show that there is fundamental geometric obstacle to obtaining a model that extends all the way to the black hole horizon.

Black Hole Enthalpy and an Entropy Inequality for the Thermodynamic Volume

In a theory where the cosmological constant $Λ$ or the gauge coupling constant $g$ arises as the vacuum expectation value, its variation should be included in the first law of thermodynamics for black holes. This becomes $dE= TdS + Ω_i dJ_i + Φ_αd Q_α+ Θd Λ$, where $E$ is now the enthalpy of the spacetime, and $Θ$, the thermodynamic conjugate of $Λ$, is proportional to an effective volume $V = -\frac{16 πΘ}{D-2}$ "inside the event horizon." Here we calculate $Θ$ and $V$ for a wide variety of $D$-dimensional charged rotating asymptotically AdS black hole spacetimes, using the first law or the Smarr relation. We compare our expressions with those obtained by implementing a suggestion of Kastor, Ray and Traschen, involving Komar integrals and Killing potentials, which we construct from conformal Killing-Yano tensors. We conjecture that the volume $V$ and the horizon area $A$ satisfy the inequality $R\equiv ((D-1)V/{\cal A}_{D-2})^{1/(D-1)}\, ({\cal A}_{D-2}/A)^{1/(D-2)}\ge1$, where ${\cal A}_{D-2}$ is the volume of the unit $(D-2)$-sphere, and we show that this is obeyed for a wide variety of black holes, and saturated for Schwarzschild-AdS. Intriguingly, this inequality is the "inverse" of the isoperimetric inequality for a volume $V$ in Euclidean $(D-1)$ space bounded by a surface of area $A$, for which $R\le 1$. Our conjectured {\it Reverse Isoperimetric Inequality} can be interpreted as the statement that the entropy inside a horizon of a given "volume" $V$ is maximised for Schwarzschild-AdS. The thermodynamic definition of $V$ requires a cosmological constant (or gauge coupling constant). However, except in 7 dimensions, a smooth limit exists where $Λ$ or $g$ goes to zero, providing a definition of $V$ even for asymptotically-flat black holes.

More about Birkhoff's Invariant and Thorne's Hoop Conjecture for Horizons

A recent precise formulation of the hoop conjecture in four spacetime dimensions is that the Birkhoff invariant $β$ (the least maximal length of any sweepout or foliation by circles) of an apparent horizon of energy $E$ and area $A$ should satisfy $β\le 4 πE$. This conjecture together with the Cosmic Censorship or Isoperimetric inequality implies that the length $\ell$ of the shortest non-trivial closed geodesic satisfies $\ell^2 \le πA$. We have tested these conjectures on the horizons of all four-charged rotating black hole solutions of ungauged supergravity theories and find that they always hold. They continue to hold in the the presence of a negative cosmological constant, and for multi-charged rotating solutions in gauged supergravity. Surprisingly, they also hold for the Ernst-Wild static black holes immersed in a magnetic field, which are asymptotic to the Melvin solution. In five spacetime dimensions we define $β$ as the least maximal area of all sweepouts of the horizon by two-dimensional tori, and find in all cases examined that $ β(g) \le \frac{16 π}{3} E$, which we conjecture holds quiet generally for apparent horizons. In even spacetime dimensions $D=2N+2$, we find that for sweepouts by the product $S^1 \times S^{D-4}$, $β$ is bounded from above by a certain dimension-dependent multiple of the energy $E$. We also find that $\ell^{D-2}$ is bounded from above by a certain dimension-dependent multiple of the horizon area $A$. Finally, we show that $\ell^{D-3}$ is bounded from above by a certain dimension-dependent multiple of the energy, for all Kerr-AdS black holes.

Universal Area Product Formulae for Rotating and Charged Black Holes in Four and Higher Dimensions

We present explicit results for the product of all horizon areas for general rotating multi-charge black holes, both in asymptotically flat and asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes in four and higher dimensions. The expressions are universal, and depend only on the quantized charges, quantized angular momenta and the cosmological constant. If the latter is also quantized these universal results may provide a "looking glass" for probing the microscopics of general black holes.

Extremal Black Hole/CFT Correspondence in (Gauged) Supergravities

We extend the investigation of the recently proposed Kerr/CFT correspondence to large classes of rotating black hole solutions in gauged and ungauged supergravities. The correspondence, proposed originally for four-dimensional Kerr black holes, asserts that the quantum states in the near-horizon region of an extremal rotating black hole are holographically dual to a two-dimensional chiral theory whose Virasoro algebra arises as an asymptotic symmetry of the near-horizon geometry. In fact in dimension D there are [(D-1)/2] commuting Virasoro algebras. We consider a general canonical class of near-horizon geometries in arbitrary dimension D, and show that in any such metric, the [(D-1)/2] central charges each imply, via the Cardy formula, a microscopic entropy that agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the associated extremal black hole. In the remainder of the paper we show for most of the known rotating black hole solutions of gauged supergravity, and for the ungauged supergravity solutions with four charges in D=4 and three charges in D=5, that their extremal near-horizon geometries indeed lie within the canonical form. This establishes that in all these examples, the microscopic entropies of the dual CFTs agree with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropies of the extremal rotating black holes.

Non-Abelian Black Holes in D=5 Maximal Gauged Supergravity

We investigate static non-abelian black hole solutions of anti-de Sitter Einstein-Yang-Mills-Dilaton gravity, which is obtained as a consistent truncation of five-dimensional maximal gauged supergravity. If the dilaton is (consistently) set to zero, the remaining equations of motion, with a spherically-symmetric ansatz, may be derived from a superpotential. The associated first-order equations admit an explicit solution supported by a non-abelian SU(2) gauge potential, which has a logarithmically growing mass term. In an extremal limit the horizon geometry becomes AdS$_2\times S^3$. If the dilaton is also excited, the equations of motion cannot easily be solved explicitly, but we obtain the asymptotic form of the more general non-abelian black holes in this case. An alternative consistent truncation, in which the Yang-Mills fields are set to zero, also admits a description in terms of a superpotential. This allows us to construct explicit wormhole solutions (neutral spherically-symmetric domain walls). These solutions may be generalised to dimensions other than five.

Almost Special Holonomy in Type IIA&M Theory

We consider spaces M_7 and M_8 of G_2 holonomy and Spin(7) holonomy in seven and eight dimensions, with a U(1) isometry. For metrics where the length of the associated circle is everywhere finite and non-zero, one can perform a Kaluza-Klein reduction of supersymmetric M-theory solutions (Minkowksi)_4\times M_7 or (Minkowksi)_3\times M_8, to give supersymmetric solutions (Minkowksi)_4\times Y_6 or (Minkowksi)_3\times Y_7 in type IIA string theory with a non-singular dilaton. We study the associated six-dimensional and seven-dimensional spaces Y_6 and Y_7 perturbatively in the regime where the string coupling is weak but still non-zero, for which the metrics remain Ricci-flat but that they no longer have special holonomy, at the linearised level. In fact they have ``almost special holonomy,'' which for the case of Y_6 means almost Kahler, together with a further condition. For Y_7 we are led to introduce the notion of an ``almost G_2 manifold,'' for which the associative 3-form is closed but not co-closed. We obtain explicit classes of non-singular metrics of almost special holonomy, associated with the near Gromov-Hausdorff limits of families of complete non-singular G_2 and Spin(7) metrics.

Black Hole Thermodynamics and Negative Entropy in deSitter and Anti-deSitter Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We investigate the charged Schwarzschild-Anti-deSitter (SAdS) BH thermodynamics in 5d Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with electromagnetic field. The Hawking-Page phase transitions between SAdS BH and pure AdS space are studied. The corresponding phase diagrams (with critical line defined by GB term coefficient and electric charge) are drawn. The possibility to account for higher derivative Maxwell terms is mentioned. In frames of proposed dS/CFT correspondence it is demonstrated that brane gravity maybe localized similarly to AdS/CFT. SdS BH thermodynamics in 5d Einstein and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity is considered. The corresponding (complicated) surface counterterms are found and used to get the conserved BH mass, free energy and entropy. The interesting feature of of higher derivative gravity is the possibility for negative (or zero) SdS (or SAdS) BH entropy which depends on the parameters of higher derivative terms. We speculate that the appearence of negative entropy may indicate a new type instability where a transition between SdS (SAdS) BH with negative entropy to SAdS (SdS) BH with positive entropy would occur.

New Complete Non-compact Spin(7) Manifolds

We construct new explicit metrics on complete non-compact Riemannian 8-manifolds with holonomy Spin(7). One manifold, which we denote by A_8, is topologically R^8 and another, which we denote by B_8, is the bundle of chiral spinors over $S^4$. Unlike the previously-known complete non-compact metric of Spin(7) holonomy, which was also defined on the bundle of chiral spinors over S^4, our new metrics are asymptotically locally conical (ALC): near infinity they approach a circle bundle with fibres of constant length over a cone whose base is the squashed Einstein metric on CP^3. We construct the covariantly-constant spinor and calibrating 4-form. We also obtain an L^2-normalisable harmonic 4-form for the A_8 manifold, and two such 4-forms (of opposite dualities) for the B_8 manifold. We use the metrics to construct new supersymmetric brane solutions in M-theory and string theory. In particular, we construct resolved fractional M2-branes involving the use of the L^2 harmonic 4-forms, and show that for each manifold there is a supersymmetric example. An intriguing feature of the new A_8 and B_8 Spin(7) metrics is that they are actually the same local solution, with the two different complete manifolds corresponding to taking the radial coordinate to be either positive or negative. We make a comparison with the Taub-NUT and Taub-BOLT metrics, which by contrast do not have special holonomy. In an appendix we construct the general solution of our first-order equations for Spin(7) holonomy, and obtain further regular metrics that are complete on manifolds B^+_8 and B^-_8 similar to B_8.

Electroweak Breaking and the mu problem in Supergravity Models with an Additional U(1)

We consider electroweak symmetry breaking in supersymmetric models with an extra non-anomalous U(1)' gauge symmetry and an extra standard-model singlet scalar S. For appropriate charges the U(1)' forbids an elementary mu term, but an effective mu is generated by the VEV of S, leading to a natural solution to the mu problem. There are a variety of scenarios leading to acceptably small Z-Z' mixing and other phenomenological consequences, all of which involve some but not excessive fine tuning. One class, driven by a large trilinear soft supersymmetry breaking term, implies small mixing, a light Z' (e.g., 200 GeV), and an electroweak phase transition that may be first order at tree level. In another class, with m_S^2 < 0 (radiative breaking), the typical scale of dimensional parameters, including M_{Z'} and the effective mu, is O(1 TeV), but the electroweak scale is smaller due to cancellations. We relate the soft supersymmetry breaking parameters at the electroweak scale to those at the string scale, choosing Yukawa couplings as determined within a class of string models. We find that one does not obtain either scenario for universal soft supersymmetry breaking mass parameters at the string scale and no exotic multiplets contributing to the renormalization group equations. However, either scenario is possible when the assumption of universal soft breaking is relaxed. Radiative breaking can also be generated by exotics, which are expected in most string models.

Z' Physics and Supersymmetry

We review the status of heavy neutral gauge bosons, Z', with emphasis on constraints that arise in supersymmetric models, especially those motivated from superstring compactifications. We first summarize the current phenomenological constraints and the prospects for Z' detection and diagnostics at the LHC and NLC. After elaborating on the status and (lack of) predictive power for general models with an additional Z', we concentrate on motivations and successes for Z' physics in supersymmetric theories in general and in a class of superstring models in particular. We review phenomenologically viable scenarios with the Z' mass in the electroweak or in the intermediate scale region.

Discovery and Identification of Extra Gauge Bosons

The discovery potential and diagnostic abilities of proposed future colliders for new heavy neutral ($Z'$) and charged ($W'$) gauge bosons are summarized. Typical bounds achievable on $M_{Z',W'}$ at the TEVATRON, DI-TEVATRON, LHC, 500 GeV NLC, and 1 TeV NLC are $\sim$1~TeV, $\sim$2~TeV, $\sim$4~TeV, 1--3~TeV, and 2--6~TeV, respectively. For $M_{Z'} \sim$1 TeV the LHC will have the capability to determine the magnitude of normalized $Z'$ quark and lepton couplings to around $10-20\%$, while the NLC would allow for determination of the couplings (including their signs) with a factor of 2 larger error-bars, provided heavy flavor tagging and longitudinal polarization of the electron beam is available.

Kahler Potentials For Orbifolds With Continuous Wilson Lines And The Symmetries Of The String Action.

By employing the symmetries of the underlying conformal field theory, the tree-level Kähler potentials for untwisted moduli of the heterotic string compactifications on orbifolds with continuous Wilson lines are derived. These symmetries act linearly on bosonic (toroidal and $E_8\times E_8$ gauge) string coordinates as well as on the untwisted (toroidal and continuous Wilson lines) moduli; they correspond to the scaling of toroidal moduli, the axionic shift of toroidal moduli and the shift of the continuous Wilson line moduli. In turn such symmetries provide sufficient constraints to determine the form of the low-energy effective action associated with the untwisted moduli up to a multiplicative factor.

Reconstruction of the Extended Gauge Structure from $Z'$ Observables at Future Colliders

The discovery of a new neutral gauge boson $Z'$ with a mass in the TeV region would allow for determination of gauge couplings of the $Z'$ to ordinary quarks and leptons in a model independent way. We show that these couplings in turn would allow us to determine the nature of the extended gauge structure. As a prime example we study the $E_6$ group. In this case two discrete constraints on experimentally determined couplings have to be satisfied. If so, the couplings would then uniquely determine the two parameters, $\tan β$ and $δ$, which fully specify the nature of the $Z'$ within $E_6$. If the $Z'$ is part of the $E_6$ gauge structure, then for $M_{Z'}=1$ TeV $\tan β$ and $δ$ could be determined to around $10\%$ at the future colliders. The NLC provides a unique determination of the two constraints as well as of $\tan β$ and $δ$, though with slightly larger error bars than at the LHC. On the other hand, since the LHC primarily determines three out of four normalized couplings, it provides weaker constraints for the underlying gauge structure.
