Dark energy and the Rutherford-Soddy radiative decay law

It is shown that a putative evolution of the fundamental couplings of strong and weak interactions via coupling to dark energy through a generalized Bekenstein-type model may, for a linear model of variation, cause deviations on the statistical nuclear decay Rutherford-Soddy law unless bounds are imposed on the parameters of this variation. Existing bounds for the weak interaction exclude any significant deviation. Bounds on the strong interaction are much less stringent.

The variation of the electromagnetic coupling and quintessence

The properties of quintessence are examined through the study of the variation of the electromagnetic coupling. We consider two simple quintessence models with a modified exponential potential and study the parameter space constraints derived from the existing observational bounds on the variation of the fine structure constant and the most recent Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe observations.

Supernovae constraints on dark energy and modified gravity models

We use the Type Ia Supernova gold sample to constrain the parameters of dark energy models namely the Cardassian, Dvali-Turner (DT) and generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG) models. In our best fit analysis for these dark energy proposals we consider flat and the non-flat priors. For all models, we find that relaxing the flatness condition implies that data favors a positive curvature; moreover, the GCG model is nearly flat, as required by Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) observations.

WMAP Constraints on a Quintessence Model

We use the results from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) for the locations of peaks and troughs of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) power spectrum, together with constraints from large-scale structure, to study a quintessence model in which the pure exponential potential is modified by a polynomial factor. Our analysis, in the $(Ω_m, h, n_s)$ cosmological parameters space shows that this quintessence model is favoured compared to $Λ$CDM for $n_s\approx 1$ and relatively high values of early quintessence; for $n_s<1$, quintessence and $Λ$CDM give similar results, except for high values of early quintessence, in which case $Λ$CDM is favoured.

Generalized Chaplygin Gas Model: Dark Energy - Dark Matter Unification and CMBR Constraints

The generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG) model allows for an unified description of the recent accelerated expansion of the Universe and the evolution of energy density perturbations. This dark energy - dark matter unification is achieved through an exotic background fluid whose equation of state is given by $p = - A/ρ^α$, where $A$ is a positive constant and $0 < α\le 1$. Stringent constraints on the model parameters can be obtained from recent WMAP and BOOMERanG bounds on the locations of the first few peaks and troughs of the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMBR) power spectrum as well as SNe Ia data.

WMAP Constraints on the Generalized Chaplygin Gas Model

The generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG) model explains the recent accelerated expansion of the Universe via an exotic background fluid whose equation of state is given by p=-A/ρ^α, where A is a positive constant and 0<α\le 1. The model is an interesting alternative to scenarios involving scalar field potentials, with the ensuing unnatural fine tuning conditions for the underlying particle physics theories. We derive constraints on the parameter space of the model from bounds on the location of the first few peaks and troughs of the the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMBR) power spectrum arising from recent WMAP and BOOMERanG data.

A Two-Field Quintessence Model

We study the dynamics of a quintessence model based on two interacting scalar fields. The model can account for the (recent) accelerated expansion of the Universe suggested by astronomical observations. Acceleration can be permanent or temporary and, for both scenarios, it is possible to obtain suitable values for the cosmological parameters while satisfying the nucleosynthesis constraint on the quintessence energy density. We argue that the model dynamics can be made consistent with a stable zero-energy relaxing supersymmetric vacuum.

Compactification, Vacuum Energy and Quintessence

We study the possibility that the vacuum energy density of scalar and internal-space gauge fields arising from the process of dimensional reduction of higher dimensional gravity theories plays the role of quintessence. We show that, for the multidimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills system compactified on a $R \times S^3 \times S^d$ topology, there are classically stable solutions such that the observed accelerated expansion of the Universe at present can be accounted for without upsetting structure formation scenarios or violating observational bounds on the vacuum energy density.

General Cosmological Features of the Einstein-Yang-Mills-Dilaton System

We establish the main features of homogeneous and isotropic dilaton, metric and Yang-Mills field configurations in a cosmological framework. Special attention is paid to the energy exchange between the dilaton and the Yang-Mills field and, in particular, a new energy exchange term is identified. Implications for the Polonyi problem in 4-dimensional string models and in dynamical supersymmetry breaking scenarios are discussed.
