Angular distributions of electrons emitted from free and deposited Na$_8$ clusters

We explore from a theoretical perspective angular distributions of electrons emitted from a Na$_8$ cluster after excitation by a short laser pulse. The tool of the study is time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) at the level of the local-density approximation (LDA) augmented by a self-interaction correction (SIC) to put emission properties in order. We consider free Na$_8$ and Na$_8$ deposited on the surfaces MgO(001) or Ar(001). For the case of free Na$_8$, we distinguish between a hypothetical situation of known cluster orientation and a more realistic ensemble of orientations. We also consider the angular distributions for emission from separate single-electron levels.

Deposition of Na Clusters on MgO(001)

We investigate the dynamics of deposition of small Na clusters on MgO(001) surface. A hierarchical modeling is used combining Quantum Mechanical with Molecular Mechanical (QM/MM) description. Full time-dependent density-functional theory is used for the cluster electrons while the substrate atoms are treated at a classical level. We consider Na$_6$ and Na$_8$ at various impact energies. We analyze the dependence on cluster geometry, trends with impact energy, and energy balance. We compare the results with deposit on the much softer Ar(001) surface.

Large-scale collective properties of self-propelled rods

We study, in two space dimensions, the large-scale properties of collections of constant-speed polar point particles interacting locally by nematic alignment in the presence of noise. This minimal approach to self-propelled rods allows one to deal with large numbers of particles, revealing a phenomenology previously unseen in more complicated models, and moreover distinctively different from both that of the purely polar case (e.g. the Vicsek model) and of active nematics.

Hierarchical Construction of Finite Diabatic Sets, By Mathieu Functions

An extension is given for the standard two component model of adiabatic, Born-Oppenheimer (BO) electronic states in a polyatonic molecule, by use of Mathieu functions of arbitrary order. The curl or compatibility conditions for the construction of a diabatic set of states based on a finite- dimensional subset of BO states are not satisfied exactly. It is shown, however, that, by successively adding higher order Mathieu functions to the BO set, the compatibility conditions are satisfied with increasingly better accuracy. We then generalize to situations in which the nonadiabatic couplings (the dynamic corrections to the BO approximation) are small (though not necessarily zero) between a finite-dimensional BO subset and the rest of the BO states. We prove that approximate diabatic sets exist, with an error that is of the order of the square of the neglected nonadiabatic couplings.
