O-PRESS: Boosting OCT axial resolution with Prior guidance, Recurrence, and Equivariant Self-Supervision

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive technology that enables real-time imaging of tissue microanatomies. The axial resolution of OCT is intrinsically constrained by the spectral bandwidth of the employed light source while maintaining a fixed center wavelength for a specific application. Physically extending this bandwidth faces strong limitations and requires a substantial cost. We present a novel computational approach, called as O-PRESS, for boosting the axial resolution of OCT with Prior Guidance, a Recurrent mechanism, and Equivariant Self-Supervision. Diverging from conventional superresolution methods that rely on physical models or data-driven techniques, our method seamlessly integrates OCT modeling and deep learning, enabling us to achieve real-time axial-resolution enhancement exclusively from measurements without a need for paired images. Our approach solves two primary tasks of resolution enhancement and noise reduction with one treatment. Both tasks are executed in a self-supervised manner, with equivariance imaging and free space priors guiding their respective processes. Experimental evaluations, encompassing both quantitative metrics and visual assessments, consistently verify the efficacy and superiority of our approach, which exhibits performance on par with fully supervised methods. Importantly, the robustness of our model is affirmed, showcasing its dual capability to enhance axial resolution while concurrently improving the signal-to-noise ratio.

A Comprehensive Study on Optimizing Systems with Data Processing Units

New hardware, such as SmartNICs, has been released to offload network applications in data centers. Off-path SmartNICs, a type of multi-core SoC SmartNICs, have attracted the attention of many researchers. Unfortunatelly, they lack the fully exploration of off-path SmartNICs. In this paper, we use a BlueField SmartNIC as an example to conduct a systematical study on the advantages and disadvantages of off-path SmartNICs. We make a detailed performance characterization on an off-path SmartNIC including computing power and network communication overhead, and propose the following advices: 1) Directly utilize the specific accelerators on the SmartNIC to offload applications; 2) Offload latency-insensitive background processing to the SmartNIC to reduce the load on the host; 3) Regard the SmartNIC as a new endpoint in the network to expand the computing power and storage resources of the server host; 4) Avoid directly employing the design method for systems based on on-path SmartNICs. We apply these advices to several use cases and show the performance improvements.

Voltage-induced high-speed DW motion in a synthetic antiferromagnet

Voltage-induced motion of a magnetic domain wall (DW) has potential in developing novel devices with ultralow dissipation. However, the speed for the voltage-induced DW motion (VIDWM) in a single ferromagnetic layer is usually very low. In this work, we proposed VIDWM with high speed in a synthetic antiferromaget (SAF). The velocity for the coupled DWs in the SAF is significantly higher than its counterpart in a single ferromagnetic layer. Strong interlayer antiferromagnetic exchange coupling plays a critical role for the high DW velocity since it inhibits the tilting of DW plane with strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. On the other hand, the Walker breakdown of DW motion is also inhibited due to the stabilization of moment orientation under a strong interlayer antiferromagnetic coupling. In theory, the voltage-induced gradient of magnetic anisotropy is proved to be equal to an effective magnetic field that drives DW.
