Absorption and (unbounded) superradiance in a static regular black hole spacetime

Regular black holes (RBHs) -- geometries free from curvature singularities -- arise naturally in theories of non linear electrodynamics. Here we study the absorption, and superradiant amplification, of a monochromatic planar wave in a charged, massive scalar field impinging on the electrically-charged Ayón-Beato-García (ABG) RBH. Comparisons are drawn with absorption and superradiance for the Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole in linear electrodynamics. We find that, in a certain parameter regime, the ABG absorption cross section is negative, due to superradiance, and moreover it is unbounded from below as the momentum of the wave approaches zero; this phenomenon of ``unbounded superradiance'' is absent in the RN case. We show how the parameter space can be divided into regions, using the bounded/unbounded and absorption/amplification boundaries. After introducing a high-frequency approximation based on particle trajectories, we calculate the absorption cross section numerically, via the partial-wave expansion, as function of wave frequency, and we present a gallery of results. The cross section of the ABG RBH is found to be larger (smaller) than in the RN case when the field charge has the same (opposite) sign as the black hole charge. We show that it is possible to find ``mimics'': situations in which the cross sections of both black holes are very similar. We conclude with a discussion of unbounded superradiance, and superradiant instabilities.

Scattering properties of charged black holes in nonlinear and Maxwell's electrodynamics

We investigate the scattering properties of a massless scalar field in the background of a charged Ayón-Beato-García regular black hole solution. Using a numerical approach, we compute the differential scattering cross section for arbitrary values of the scattering angle and of the incident wave frequency. We compare our results with those obtained via the classical geodesic scattering of massless particles, as well as with the semiclassical glory approximation, and show that they present an excellent agreement in the corresponding limits. We also show that Ayón-Beato-García and Reissner-Nordström black hole solutions present similar scattering properties, for low-to-moderate values of the black hole electric charge, for any value of the scattering angle.

Absorption by deformed black holes

Alternative theories of gravity and the parameterized deviation approach allow black hole solutions to have additional parameters beyond mass, charge and angular momentum. Matter fields could be, in principle, affected by the additional parameters of these solutions. We compute the absorption cross section of massless spin-0 waves by static Konoplya-Zhidenko black holes, characterized by a deformation parameter introduced in the mass term, and compare it with the well-known absorption of a Schwarzschild black hole with the same mass. We compare our numerical results with the sinc approximation in the high-frequency limit, finding excellent agreement.

Schwarzschild-like black holes: Light-like trajectories and massless scalar absorption

Black holes are among the most intriguing objects in nature. They are believed to be fully described by General Relativity (GR), and the astrophysical black holes are expected to belong to the Kerr family, obeying the no-hair theorems. Alternative theories of gravity or parameterized deviations of GR allow black hole solutions, which have additional parameters other than mass and angular momentum. We analyze a Schwarzschild-like metric, proposed by Johannsen and Psaltis, characterized by its mass and a deformation parameter. We compute the absorption cross section of massless scalar waves for different values of this deformation parameter and compare it with the corresponding scalar absorption cross section of the Schwarzschild black hole. We also present analytical approximations for the absorption cross section in the high-frequency regime. We check the consistence of our results comparing the numerical and analytical approaches, finding excellent agreement.

Series reduction method for scattering of planar waves by Kerr-Newman black holes

We present a practical method for evaluating the scattering amplitude $f_s(θ,ϕ)$ that arises in the context of the scattering of scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational planar waves by a rotating black hole. The partial-wave representation of $f_s$ is a divergent series, but $f_s$ itself diverges only at a single point on the sphere. Here we show that $f_s$ can be expressed as the product of a reduced series and a pre-factor that diverges only at this point. The coefficients of the reduced series are found iteratively as linear combinations of those in the original series, and the reduced series is shown to have amenable convergence properties. This series-reduction method has its origins in an approach originally used in electron scattering calculations in the 1950s, which we have extended to the axisymmetric context for all bosonic fields.

Absorption by dirty black holes: null geodesics and scalar waves

Black holes are a paradigm in nowadays physics, and are expected to be hosted at the center of galaxies. Supermassive galactic black holes are not isolated, and their surroundings play crucial roles in many observational features. The absorption and scattering of fields by isolated black holes have been vastly studied, allowing the understanding of many phenomenological features. However, as far as we are aware, a study of the influence of the presence of matter surrounding black holes in its planar wave scattering and absorption spectrum is still lacking in the literature. This may be important in the analysis of, for instance, the accretion of dark matter by black holes. We consider planar massless scalar waves incident upon a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by a thin spherical shell. We use the partial wave method to determine the absorption cross section, and present a selection of numerical results. In the low-frequency regime, we show that the absorption cross section is equal to the horizon area. At the high-frequency regime, we show that the absorption cross section approaches the geodesic capture cross section.

Absorption of planar massless scalar waves by Kerr black holes

We consider planar massless scalar waves impinging upon a Kerr black hole, for general angles of incidence. We compute the absorption cross section via the partial wave approach, and present a gallery of results. In the low-frequency regime, we show that the cross section approaches the horizon area; in the high-frequency regime, we show that the cross section approaches the geodesic capture cross section. In the aligned case, we extend the complex angular momentum method to obtain a `sinc' approximation, which relates the regular high-frequency oscillations in the cross section to the properties of the polar null orbit. In the non-aligned case, we show, via a semi-analytic approximation, that the reduction in symmetry generates a richer, less regular absorption cross section. We separate the absorption cross section into corotating and counterrotating contributions, showing that the absorption is larger for counterrotating waves, as expected.
