Interacting realization of cosmological singularities with variable vacuum energy

We examine an interacting dark matter--variable vacuum energy model for a spatially flat Friedmann-Roberston-Walker spacetime, focusing on the appearance of cosmological singularities such as \emph{big rip, big brake, big freeze}, and \emph{ big separation} along with abrupt events (\emph{infinite $γ$- singularity} and \emph{new w-singularity}) at late times. We introduce a phenomenological interaction which has a nonlinear dependence on the total energy density of the dark sector and its derivative, solve exactly the source equation for the model and find the energy density as function of the scale factor as well as the time dependence of the approximate scale factor in the neighborhood of the singularities. We describe the main characteristics of these singularities by exploring the type of interaction that makes them possible along with behavior of dark components near them. We apply the geometric Tipler and Królak method for determining the fate of time-like geodesic curves around the singularities. We also explore the strength of them by analyzing the leading term in some geometric invariants such as the square Riemann scalar and the Ricci scalar.

Interacting dark sector with transversal interaction

We investigate the interacting dark sector composed of dark matter, dark energy, and dark radiation for a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) background by introducing a three-dimensional internal space spanned by the interaction vector $\mathbf{Q}$ and solve the source equation for a linear transversal interaction. Then, we explore a realistic model with dark matter coupled to a scalar field plus a decoupled radiation term, analyze the amount of dark energy in the radiation era and find that our model is consistent with the recent measurements of cosmic microwave background anisotropy coming from Planck along with the future constraints achievable by CMBPol experiment.

Dark radiation and dark matter coupled to holographic Ricci dark energy

We investigate a universe filled with interacting dark matter, holographic dark energy, and dark radiation for the spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) spacetime. We use a linear interaction to reconstruct all the component energy densities in terms of the scale factor by directly solving the balance's equations along with the source equation. We apply the $χ^{2}$ method to the observational Hubble data for constraining the cosmic parameters, contrast with the Union 2 sample of supernovae, and analyze the amount of dark energy in the radiation era. It turns out that our model exhibits an excess of dark energy in the recombination era whereas the stringent bound $Ω_{\rm x}(z\simeq 10^{10})<0.21$ at big-bang nucleosynthesis is fulfilled. We find that the interaction provides a physical mechanism for alleviating the triple cosmic coincidence and this leads to $Ω_{\rm m0}/Ω_{\rm x0} \simeq Ω_{\rm r0}/Ω_{\rm x0} \simeq {\cal O}(1)$.

Interacting dark sector with variable vacuum energy

We examine a cosmological scenario where dark matter is coupled to a variable vacuum energy while baryons and photons are two decoupled components for a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime. We apply the $χ^{2}$ method to the updated observational Hubble data for constraining the cosmological parameters and analyze the amount of dark energy in the radiation era. We show that our model fulfills the severe bound of $Ω_{x}(z\simeq 1100)<0.009$ at the $2σ$ level, so it is consistent with the recent analysis that includes cosmic microwave background anisotropy measurements from the Planck survey, the Atacama Cosmology Telescope, and the South Pole Telescope along with the future constraints achievable by the Euclid and CMBPol experiments, and fulfills the stringent bound $Ω_{x}(z\simeq 10^{10})<0.04$ at the $2σ$ level in the big-bang nucleosynthesis epoch.

Modified holographic Ricci dark energy coupled to interacting dark matter and a non interacting baryonic component

We examine a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe filled with interacting dark matter, modified holographic Ricci dark energy (MHRDE), and a decoupled baryonic component. The estimations of the cosmic parameters with Hubble data lead to an age of the universe of $13.17 {\rm Gyr}$ and show that the MHRDE is free from the cosmic-age problem at low redshift ($0 \leq z \leq 2$) in contrast to holographic Ricci dark energy (HRDE) case. We constrain the parameters with the Union2 data set and contrast with the Hubble data. We also study the behavior of dark energy at early times by taking into account the severe bounds found at recombination era and/or at big bang nucleosynthesis. The inclusion of a non interacting baryonic matter forces that the amount of dark energy at $z_{t} \sim {\cal O}(1)$ changes abruptly implying that $Ω_x (z\simeq 1100) =0.03$, so the bounds reported by the forecast of Planck and CMBPol experiments are more favored for the MHRDE model than in the case of HRDE cutoff. For the former model, we also obtain that at high redshift the fraction of dark energy varies from 0.006 to 0.002, then the amount of $Ω_x $ at the big bang nucleosynthesis era does not disturb the observed Helium abundance in the universe provided that the bound $Ω_{x}(z\simeq 10^{10})<0.21$ is hold.

Nonbaryonic dark matter and scalar field coupled with a transversal interaction plus decoupled radiation

We analyze a universe filled with interacting dark matter, a scalar field accommodated as dark radiation along with dark energy plus a decoupled radiation term within the framework of spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) spacetime. We work in a three-dimensional internal space spanned by the interaction vector and use a transversal interaction $\mathbf{Q_t}$ for solving the source equation in order to find all the interacting component energy densities. We asymptotically reconstruct the scalar field and potential from an early radiation era to the late dominate dark energy one, passing through an intermediate epoch dominated by dark matter. We apply the $χ^{2}$ method to the updated observational Hubble data for constraining the cosmic parameters, contrast with the Union 2 sample of supernovae, and analyze the amount of dark energy in the radiation era. It turns out that our model fulfills the severe bound of $Ω_{\rm ϕ}(z\simeq 1100)<0.018$ at $2σ$ level, is consistent with the recent analysis that includes cosmic microwave background anisotropy measurements from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and the South Pole Telescope along with the future constraints achievable by Planck and CMBPol experiments, and satisfies the stringent bound $Ω_{\rm ϕ}(z\simeq 10^{10})<0.04$ at $2σ$ level in the big-bang nucleosynthesis epoch.

Cosmological Applications of the Frieden-Soffer Nonextensive Information Transfer Game

We show how the demon of Frieden and Soffer, working in a non-extensive statistical scenario, is able to devise solutions to some of Einstein's field equations by recourse to nonlocal changes of variables between appropriate differential equations. It is seen that a variety of cosmological problems involving Einstein's field equations can be reinterpreted as situations in which the pertinent solution is obtained, with tools of Statistical Mechanics, {\it in a nonextensive Tsallis scenario}.

Dark matter and Ricci-like holographic dark energy coupled through a quadratic interaction

We examine a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe filled with interacting dark matter and a modified holographic Ricci dark energy (MHRDE). The interaction term is selected as a significant rational function of the total energy density and its first derivative homogeneous of degree. We show that the effective one-fluid obeys the equation of state of a relaxed Chaplygin gas, then the universe turns to be dominated by pressureless dark matter at early times and undergoes an accelerated expansion in the far future driven by a strong negative pressure. Performing a $χ^{2}$-statistical analysis with the observational Hubble data and the Union2 compilation of SNe Ia, we place some constraints on cosmological parameters analyzing the feasibleness of the modified holographic Ricci ansatz. It turned that MHRDE gets the accelerated expansion faster than the $Λ$CDM model. Finally, a new model with a component that does not exchange energy with the interacting dark sector is presented for studying bounds on the dark energy at early times.

Dark matter, dark energy, and dark radiation coupled with a transversal interaction

We investigate a cosmological scenario with three interacting components that includes dark matter, dark energy, and radiation in the spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. We introduce a 3-dimensional internal space, the interaction vector $\mathbf{Q}=(Q_{x}, Q_{m}, Q_{r})$ satisfying the constraint plane $Q_{x}+ Q_{m}+ Q_{r}=0$, the barotropic index vector $ \boldmath $γ$=(\ga_x,\ga_m,\ga_r)$ and select a transversal interaction vector $\mathbf{Q_t}$ in a sense that $\mathbf{Q_t}\cdot \boldmath $γ$=0$. We exactly solve the source equation for a linear $\mathbf{Q_t}$, that depends on the total energy density and its derivatives up to third order, and find all the component energy densities. We obtain a large set of interactions for which the source equation admits a power law solution and show its asymptotic stability by constructing the Lyapunov function. We apply the $χ^{2}$ method to the observational Hubble data for constraining the cosmic parameters, and analyze the amount of dark energy in the radiation era for the above linear $\mathbf{Q_t}$. It turns to be that our model fulfills the severe bound of $Ω_{x}(z\simeq 1100)<0.1$ and is consistent with the future constraints achievable by Planck and CMBPol experiments.

Evolution of a universe filled with a causal viscous fluid

The behaviour of solutions to the Einstein equations with a causal viscous fluid source is investigated. In this model we consider a spatially flat Robertson-Walker metric, the bulk viscosity coefficient is related to the energy density as $ζ= αρ^{m}$, and the relaxation time is given by $ζ/ρ$. In the case $m = 1/2$ we find the exact solutions and we verify whether they satisfy the energy conditions. Besides, we study analytically the asymptotic stability of several families of solutions for arbitrary $m$. We find that the qualitative asymptotic behaviour in the far future is not altered by relaxation processes, but they change the behaviour in the past, introducing singular instead of deflationary evolutions or making the Universe bounce due to the violation of the energy conditions.

Exactly solved models of interacting dark matter and dark energy

We introduce an effective one-fluid description of the interacting dark sector in a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker space-time and investigate the stability of the power-law solutions. We find the "source equation" for the total energy density and determine the energy density of each dark component. We study linear and nonlinear interactions which depend on the dark matter and dark energy densities, their first derivatives, the total energy density with its derivatives up to second order and the scale factor. We solve the evolution equations of the dark components for both interactions, examine exhaustively several examples and show cases where the problem of the coincidence is alleviated. We show that a generic nonlinear interaction gives rise to the "relaxed Chaplygin gas model" whose effective equation of state includes the variable modified Chaplygin gas model while some others nonlinear interactions yield de Sitter and power-law scenarios.

Form invariance symmetry generates a large set of FRW cosmologies

We show that Einstein's field equations for spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) space times have a form invariance symmetry (FIS) realized by the form invariance transformations (FIT) which are indeed generated by an invertible function of the source energy density. These transformations act on the Hubble expansion rate, the energy density, and pressure of the cosmic fluid; likewise such transformations are endowed with a Lie group structure. Each representation of this group is associated with a particular fluid and consequently a determined cosmology, so that, the FIS defines a set of equivalent cosmological models. We focus our seek in the FIT generated by a linear function because it provides a natural framework to express the duality and also produces a large sets of cosmologies, starting from a seed one, in several contexts as for instance in the cases of a perfect fluid source and a scalar field driven by a potential depending linearly on the scalar field kinetic energy density.

Holographic dark energy linearly interacting with dark matter

We investigate a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmological model with cold dark matter coupled to a modified holographic Ricci dark energy through a general interaction term linear in the energy densities of dark matter and dark energy, the total energy density and its derivative. Using the statistical method of $χ^2$-function for the Hubble data, we obtain $H_0=73.6$km/sMpc, $ω_s=-0.842$ for the asymptotic equation of state and $ z_{acc}= 0.89 $. The estimated values of $Ω_{c0}$ which fulfill the current observational bounds corresponds to a dark energy density varying in the range $0.25R < \ro_x < 0.27R$.

Interacting dark matter and modified holographic Ricci dark energy plus a noninteracting cosmic component

We investigate a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe that has an interacting dark matter, a modified holographic Ricci dark energy (MHRDE), plus a third, decoupled component that behaves as a radiation term. We consider a nonlinear interaction in the dark component densities and their derivatives up to second order. We apply the $χ^{2}$ method to the observational Hubble data for constraining the cosmological parameters and analyze the amount of dark energy in the radiation era for both MHRDE and holographic Ricci dark energy models. The former is consistent with the bound $Ω_{x}(z\simeq 1100)<0.1$ reported for the behavior of dark energy at early times while the latter does not fulfill it.

Self-interacting holographic dark energy

We investigate a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe where dark matter exchanges energy with a self-interacting holographic dark energy (SIHDE). Using the $χ^2$--statistical method on the Hubble function, we obtain a critical redshift that seems to be consistent with both BAO and CMB data. We calculate the theoretical distance modulus for confronting with the observational data of SNe Ia for small redshift $z\leq 0.1$ and large redshift $0.1 \leq z\leq 1.5$. The model gets accelerate faster than the $Λ$CDM one and it can be a good candidate to alleviate the coincidence problem. We also examine the age crisis at high redshift associated with the old quasar APM 08279+5255.

Interacting dark matter and modified holographic Ricci dark energy induce a relaxed Chaplygin gas

We investigate a model of interacting dark matter and dark energy given by a modified holographic Ricci cutoff in a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) space-time. We consider a nonlinear interaction consisting of a significant rational function of the total energy density and its first derivative homogeneous of degree one and show that the effective one-fluid obeys the equation of state of a relaxed Chaplygin gas. So that, the universe is dominated by pressureless dark matter at early times and undergoes an accelerated expansion in the far future driven by a strong negative pressure. We apply the $χ^{2}$-statistical method to the observational Hubble data and the Union2 compilation of SNe Ia for constraining the cosmological parameters and analyze the feasibility of the modified holographic Ricci cutoff. By using the new $Om$ diagnostic method, we find that the effective model differs substantially from the $Λ$--CDM one, because it gets the accelerated expansion faster than the $Λ$--CDM model. Finally, a new model with a third component decoupled from the interacting dark sector is presented for studying bounds on the dark energy at early times.

k-essence and tachyons in brane-worlds

We investigate a k-essence field localized on the brane evolving linearly with the cosmological time for arbitrary kinetic functions and consider the atypical k-essence model for linear and nonlinear k-fields in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmology. In the former case the k-field is driven by an inverse quadratic polynomial potential and the solutions exhibit several different behaviors which include expanding, contracting and bouncing universes as well as a model with a finite time span, some of them ending in a big crunch or a big rip. In the latter case we find the potential and show that the atypical k-essence model is dynamically uncomplete. Particularly, by selecting the extended tachyonic kinetic functions we analyze the high and low energy limits of our model, obtaining the nearly power law solution. We introduce a tachyon field with negative energy density and show that the universe evolves between two singularities.

Comments on Unified dark energy and dark matter from a scalar field different from quintessence

In a recent paper by C. Gao, M. Kunz, A. Liddle and D. Parkinson [arXiv:0912.0949], the unification of dark matter and dark energy was explored within a theory containing a scalar field of non-Lagrangian type. This scalar field, different from the classic quintessence, can be obtained from the scalar field representation of an interacting two-fluid mixture described in the paper by L.P. Chimento and M. Forte [arXiv:0706.4142]

Crossing the phantom divide with k-essence in brane-worlds

We study a flat 3-brane in presence of a linear $k$ field with nonzero cosmological constant $Λ_{4}$. In this model the crossing of the phantom divide (PD) occurs when the $k$-essence energy density becomes negative. We show that in the high energy regime the effective equation of state has a resemblance of a modified Chaplygin gas while in the low energy regime it becomes linear. We find a scale factor that begins from a singularity and evolves to a de Sitter stable stage while other solutions have a super-accelerated regime and end with a big rip. We use the energy conditions to show when the effective equation of state of the brane-universe crosses the PD.

k-essence and extended tachyons in brane-worlds

We study a k-essence field evolving linearly with the cosmic time and the atypical k-essence model on a homogeneous and isotropic flat 3-brane. We show that the k-field is driven by an inverse quadratic polynomial potential. The solutions represent expanding, contracting or bouncing universes with a finite time span and some of them end in a big crunch or a big rip. Besides, by selecting the extended tachyonic kinetic functions we analyze the high and low energy limits of our model, obtaining the nearly power law solution. We introduce a tachyon field with negative energy density and show that the universe evolves between two singularities.

Linear and nonlinear interactions in the dark sector

We investigate models of interacting dark matter and dark energy for the universe in a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) space-time. We find the "source equation" for the total energy density and determine the energy density of each dark component. We introduce an effective one-fluid description to evidence that interacting and unified models are related with each other, analyze the effective model and obtain the attractor solutions. We study linear and nonlinear interactions, the former comprises a linear combination of the dark matter and dark energy densities, their first derivatives, the total energy density, its first and second derivatives and a function of the scale factor. The latter is a possible generalization of the linear interaction consisting of an aggregate of the above linear combination and a significant nonlinear term built with a rational function of the dark matter and dark energy densities homogeneous of degree one. We solve the evolution equations of the dark components for both interactions and examine exhaustively several examples. There exist cases where the effective one-fluid description produces different alternatives to the $\La$CDM model and cases where the problem of coincidence is alleviated. In addition, we find that some nonlinear interactions yield an effective one-fluid model with a Chaplygin gas equation of state, whereas others generate cosmological models with de Sitter and power-law expansions. We show that a generic nonlinear interaction induces an effective equation of state which depends on the scale factor in the same way that the variable modified Chaplygin gas model, giving rise to the "relaxed Chaplygin gas model".

DBI models for the unification of dark matter and dark energy

We propose a model based on a DBI action for the unification of dark matter and dark energy. This is supported by the results of the study of its background behavior at early and late times, and reinforced by the analysis of the evolution of perturbations. We also perform a Bayesian analysis to set observational constraints on the parameters of the model using type Ia SN, CMB shift and BAO data. Finally, to complete the study we investigate its kinematics aspects, such as the effective equation of state parameter, acceleration parameter and transition redshift. Particularizing those parameters for the best fit one appreciates that an effective phantom is preferred.

Tachyon and Quintessence Brane-World Universe

Using tachyon or quintessence fields along with a barotropic fluid on the brane we examine the different cosmological stages in a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker(FRW) universe, from the first radiation scenario to the later era dominated by cosmic string networks. We introduce a new algorithm to generalize previous works on exact solutions and apply it to study tachyon and quintessence fields localized on the brane and study the low and high energy regimes. We show that the tachyon and quintessence fields are driven by an inverse power law potential. Finally, we find several simples exacts solutions for tachyon and/or quintessence fields.

Tachyonization of the $\La$CDM cosmological model

In this work a tachyonization of the $Λ$CDM model for a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker space-time is proposed. A tachyon field and a cosmological constant are considered as the sources of the gravitational field. Starting from a stability analysis and from the exact solutions for a standard tachyon field driven by a given potential, the search for a large set of cosmological models which contain the $Λ$CDM model is investigated. By the use of internal transformations two new kinds of tachyon fields are derived from the standard tachyon field, namely, a complementary and a phantom tachyon fields. Numerical solutions for the three kinds of tachyon fields are determined and it is shown that the standard and complementary tachyon fields reproduces the $Λ$CDM model as a limiting case. The standard tachyon field can also describe a transition from an accelerated to a decelerated regime, behaving as an inflaton field at early times and as a matter field at late times. The complementary tachyon field always behaves as a matter field. The phantom tachyon field is characterized by a rapid expansion where its energy density increases with time.

Duality extended Chaplygin cosmologies with a big rip

We consider modifications to the Friedmann equation motivated by recent proposals along these lines pursuing an explanation to the observed late time acceleration. Here we show those modifications can be framed within a theory with self-interacting gravity, where the term self-interaction refers here to the presence of functions of $ρ$ and $p$ in the right hand side of the Einstein equations. We then discuss the construction of the duals of the cosmologies generated within that framework. After that we investigate the modifications required to generate generalized and modified Chaplygin cosmologies and show that their duals belong to a larger family of cosmologies we call extended Chaplygin cosmologies. Finally, by letting the parameters of those models take values not earlier considered in the literature we show some representatives of that family of cosmologies display sudden future singularities, which indicates their behavior is rather different from generalized or modified Chaplygin gas cosmologies. This reinforces the idea that modifications of gravity can be responsible for unexpected evolutionary features in the universe.

Interacting fluids generating identical, dual and phantom cosmologies

We find the group of symmetry transformations generated by interacting fluids in spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) spacetime which links cosmologies with the same scale factor {\it (identity)} or with scale factors $a$ and $a^{-1}$ {\it (duality)}. There exists a duality between contracting and superaccelerated expanding scenarios associated with {\it (phantom)} cosmologies. We investigate the action of this symmetry group on self-interacting minimally(conformally) coupled quintessence and $k$-essence cosmologies.

General behaviour of Bianchi VI_0 solutions with an exponential-potential scalar field

The solutions to the Einstein-Klein-Gordon equations without a cosmological constant are investigated for an exponential potential in a Bianchi VI_0 metric. There exists a two-parameter family of solutions which have a power-law inflationary behaviour when the exponent of the potential, k, satisfies k^2<2. In addition, there exists a two-parameter family of singular solutions for all k^2 values. A simple anisotropic exact solution is found to be stable when 2<k^2.
