Local cohomology modules of polynomial or power series rings over rings of small dimension

Let AA be a ring and RR be a polynomial or a power series ring over AA. When AA has dimension zero, we show that the Bass numbers and the associated primes of the local cohomology modules over RR are finite. Moreover, if AA has dimension one and ππ is an nonzero divisor, then the same properties hold for prime ideals that contain π.π. These results do not require that AA contains a field. As a consequence, we give a different proof for the finiteness properties of local cohomology over unramified regular local rings. In addition, we extend previous results on the injective dimension of local cohomology modules over certain regular rings of mixed characteristic.

Local cohomology properties of direct summands

In this article, we prove that if R→SR\to S is a homomorphism of Noetherian rings that splits, then for every i≥0i\geq 0 and ideal I⊂RI\subset R, $\Ass_R H^i_I(R)$ is finite when $\Ass_S H^i_{IS}(S)$ is finite. In addition, if SS is a Cohen-Macaulay ring that is finitely generated as an RR-module, such that all the Bass numbers of HISi(S)H^i_{IS}(S), as an SS-module, are finite, then all the Bass numbers of HIi(R)H^i_{I}(R), as an RR-module, are finite. Moreover, we show these results for a larger class a functors introduced by Lyubeznik. As a consequence, we exhibit a Gorenstein FF-regular UFD of positive characteristic that is not a direct summand, not even a pure subring, of any regular ring.

On certain rings of differentiable type and finiteness properties of local cohomology

Let RR be a commutative FF-algebra, where FF is a field of characteristic 0, satisfying the following conditions: RR is equidimensional of dimension nn, every residual field with respect to a maximal ideal is an algebraic extension of F,F, and $\Der_F (R)$ is a finitely generated projective RR-module of rank nn such that $R_m\otimes_R \Der_F (R)=\Der_F(R_m)$. We show that the associated graded ring of the ring of differentiable operators, D(R,F)D(R,F), is a commutative Noetherian regular with unity and pure graded dimension equal to 2dim⁡(R)2\dim(R). Moreover, we prove that D(R,F)D(R,F) has weak global dimension equal to dim⁡(R)\dim(R) and that its Bernstein class is closed under localization at one element. Using these properties of D(R,F)D(R,F), we show that the set of associated primes of every local cohomology module, HIi(R)H^i_I(R), is finite. If (S,m,K)(S,m,K) is a complete regular local ring of mixed characteristic p>0p>0, we show that the localization of SS at pp, SpS_p, is such a ring. As a consequence, the set of associated primes of HIi(S)H^i_I (S) that does not contain pp is finite. Moreover, we prove this finiteness property for a larger class of functors.
