Arithmetics and combinatorics of tropical Severi varieties of univariate polynomials

We give a description of the tropical variety of univariate polynomials of degree n having two double roots. As a set, it is given as the union of three types of maximal cones of dimension n-1, where only cones of two of these types are cones of the secondary fan of {0,...,n}. Through Kapranov's theorem, this goal is achieved by a careful study of the possible valuations of the elementary symmetric functions of the roots of a polynomial with two double root. Despite its apparent simplicity, the computation of the tropical Severi variety has both combinatorial and arithmetic ingredients.

The tropical discriminant in positive characteristic

We study singularities in tropical hypersurfaces defined by a valuation over a field of positive characteristic. We provide a method to compute the set of singular points of a tropical hypersurface in positive characteristic and the p-adic case. This computation is applied to determine all maximal cones of the tropical linear space of univariate polynomials of degree $n$ and characteristic $p$ with a fixed double root and the fan of all tropical polynomials that have $0$ as a double root independently of the characteristic. We also compute, by pure tropical means, the number of vertices, edges and 2-faces of the Newton polytope of the discriminant of polynomials of degree $p$ in characteristic $p$.

On real tropical bases and real tropical discriminants

We explore the concept of real tropical basis of an ideal in the field of real Puiseux series. We show explicit tropical bases of zero-dimensional real radical ideals, linear ideals and hypersurfaces coming from combinatorial patchworking. But we also show that there exist real radical ideals that do not admit a tropical basis. As an application, we show how to compute the set of singular points of a real tropical hypersurface. i.e. we compute the real tropical discriminant.

Computing Hypercircles by Moving Hyperplanes

Let K be a field of characteristic zero, alpha algebraic of degree n over K. Given a proper parametrization psi of a rational curve C, we present a new algorithm to compute the hypercircle associated to the parametrization psi. As a consequence, we can decide if the curve C is defined over K and, if not, to compute the minimum field of definition of C containing K. The algorithm exploits the conjugate curves of C but avoids computation in the normal closure of K(alpha) over K.

Generalizing circles over algebraic extensions

This paper deals with a family of spatial rational curves that were introduced by Andradas, Recio and Sendra, under the name of hypercircles, as an algorithmic cornerstone tool in the context of improving the rational parametrization (simplifying the coefficients of the rational functions, when possible) of algebraic varieties. A real circle can be defined as the image of the real axis under a Moebius transformation in the complex field. Likewise, and roughly speaking, a hypercircle can be defined as the image of a line ("the ${\mathbb{K}}$-axis") in a $n$-degree finite algebraic extension $\mathbb{K}(α)\thickapprox\mathbb{K}^n$ under the transformation $\frac{at+b}{ct+d}:\mathbb{K}(α)\to\mathbb{K}(α)$. The aim of this article is to extend, to the case of hypercircles, some of the specific properties of circles. We show that hypercircles are precisely, via $\mathbb{K}$-projective transformations, the rational normal curve of a suitable degree. We also obtain a complete description of the points at infinity of these curves (generalizing the cyclic structure at infinity of circles). We characterize hypercircles as those curves of degree equal to the dimension of the ambient affine space and with infinitely many ${\mathbb{K}}$-rational points, passing through these points at infinity. Moreover, we give explicit formulae for the parametrization and implicitation of hypercircles. Besides the intrinsic interest of this very special family of curves, the understanding of its properties has a direct application to the simplification of parametrizations problem, as shown in the last section.
