Abstract argumentation and answer set programming: two faces of Nelson's logic

In this work, we show that both logic programming and abstract argumentation frameworks can be interpreted in terms of Nelson's constructive logic N4. We do so by formalizing, in this logic, two principles that we call non-contradictory inference and strengthened closed world assumption: the first states that no belief can be held based on contradictory evidence while the latter forces both unknown and contradictory evidence to be regarded as false. Using these principles, both logic programming and abstract argumentation frameworks are translated into constructive logic in a modular way and using the object language. Logic programming implication and abstract argumentation supports become, in the translation, a new implication connective following the non-contradictory inference principle. Attacks are then represented by combining this new implication with strong negation. Under consideration in Theory and Practice of Logic Programming (TPLP).

Tableau systems for some Ivlev-like (quantified) modal logics

Ivlev's pioneering work started in the 1970's showed a new and promissory way in the study of modal logic from the perspective of many-valued logics. Continuing our previous work on Ivlev-like non-normal modal logics with non-deterministic semantics, we present in this paper tableau systems for Tm, S4m and S5m, the non-normal versions of T, S4 and S5, respectively, as well as for their corresponding first-order extensions Tm*, S4m* and S5m*.

Modal Logic With Non-deterministic Semantics: Part II -- Quantified Case

In the first part of this paper we analyzed finite non-deterministic matrix semantics for propositional non-normal modal logics as an alternative to the standard Kripke's possible world semantics. This kind of modal systems characterized by finite non-deterministic matrices was originally proposed by Ju. Ivlev in the 70's. The aim of this second paper is to introduce a formal non-deterministic semantical framework for the quantified versions of some Ivlev-like non-normal modal logics. It will be shown that several well-known controversial issues of quantified modal logics, relative to the identity predicate, Barcan's formulas, and de dicto and de re modalities, can be tackled from a new angle within the present framework.

A framework for modelling Molecular Interaction Maps

Metabolic networks, formed by a series of metabolic pathways, are made of intracellular and extracellular reactions that determine the biochemical properties of a cell, and by a set of interactions that guide and regulate the activity of these reactions. Most of these pathways are formed by an intricate and complex network of chain reactions, and can be represented in a human readable form using graphs which describe the cell cycle checkpoint pathways. This paper proposes a method to represent Molecular Interaction Maps (graphical representations of complex metabolic networks) in Linear Temporal Logic. The logical representation of such networks allows one to reason about them, in order to check, for instance, whether a graph satisfies a given property $ϕ$, as well as to find out which initial conditons would guarantee $ϕ$, or else how can the the graph be updated in order to satisfy $ϕ$. Both the translation and resolution methods have been implemented in a tool capable of addressing such questions thanks to a reduction to propositional logic which allows exploiting classical SAT solvers.
