Universal Hitchin moduli spaces

We study metric aspects of the universal moduli space of solutions to Hitchin's equations as the complex structure $J$ varies over the Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}$ of a closed surface $Σ$. Our approach is gauge theoretical and builds on the theory of Kähler fibrations and the moment map interpretation of constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics. Our first main result establishes that, over the moduli space of cscK metrics, the universal moduli space of solutions to Hitchin's equations carries a natural complex structure together with a family of pseudo-Kähler metrics forming a Kähler fibration with a Kähler Ehresmann connection. We then investigate a second universal moduli space, constructed from the space of flat $G$-connections over $\mathcal{T}$, which admits a nontrivial $J$-dependent Kähler fibration structure discovered by Hitchin. Using symplectic reduction, we build universal moduli spaces of solutions to the harmonicity equations depending on a coupling constant $α$, obtaining natural complex and pseudo-Kähler structures and an explicit Kähler potential. The main novelty here is that this moduli space is defined by a system coupling the scalar curvature with a cubic term in the Higgs field. Finally, we propose a conjectural relationship between the two resulting families of moduli spaces in the weak-coupling limit $α\to 0$, inspired by the twistor geometry of Hitchin's hyperkähler moduli space.

Obstructions to the existence of solutions of the self-dual Einstein-Maxwell-Higgs equations on a compact surface

In this note we present an obstruction to the existence of solutions to the self-dual Einstein-Maxwell-Higgs equations on a compact surface, which depends on the multiplicities of the zeroes of the \emph{Higgs field} and the \emph{vortex number} $N$. In particular, we exhibit infinitely many examples of Higgs fields for which solutions cannot exist.

On the Kähler-Yang-Mills-Higgs equations

In this paper we introduce a set of equations on a principal bundle over a compact complex manifold coupling a connection on the principal bundle, a section of an associated bundle with Kähler fibre, and a Kähler structure on the base. These equations are a generalization of the Kähler-Yang-Mills equations introduced by the authors. They also generalize the constant scalar curvature for a Kähler metric studied by Donaldson and others, as well as the Yang-Mills-Higgs equations studied by Mundet i Riera. We provide a moment map interpretation of the equations, construct some first examples, and study obstructions to the existence of solutions.

Gravitating vortices, cosmic strings, and the Kähler--Yang--Mills equations

In this paper we construct new solutions of the Kahler-Yang-Mills equations, by applying dimensional reduction methods to the product of the complex projective line with a compact Riemann surface. The resulting equations, that we call gravitating vortex equations, describe Abelian vortices on the Riemann surface with back reaction of the metric. As a particular case of these gravitating vortices on the Riemann sphere we find solutions of the Einstein-Bogomol'nyi equations, which physically correspond to Nielsen-Olesen cosmic strings in the Bogomol'nyi phase. We use this to provide a Geometric Invariant Theory interpretation of an existence result by Y. Yang for the Einstein-Bogomol'nyi equations, applying a criterion due to G. Szekelyhidi.

Dimensional reduction and quiver bundles

The so-called Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence, proved by Donaldson, Uhlenbeck and Yau, establishes that an indecomposable holomorphic vector bundle over a compact Kahler manifold admits a Hermitian-Einstein metric if and only if the bundle satisfies the Mumford-Takemoto stability condition. In this paper we consider a variant of this correspondence for G-equivariant vector bundles on the product of a compact Kahler manifold X by a flag manifold G/P, where G is a complex semisimple Lie group and P is a parabolic subgroup. The modification that we consider is determined by a filtration of the vector bundle which is naturally defined by the equivariance of the bundle. The study of invariant solutions to the modified Hermitian-Einstein equation over XxG/P leads, via dimensional reduction techniques, to gauge-theoretic equations on X. These are equations for hermitian metrics on a set of holomorphic bundles on X linked by morphisms, defining what we call a quiver bundle for a quiver with relations whose structure is entirely determined by the parabolic subgroup P. Similarly, the corresponding stability condition for the invariant filtration over XxG/P gives rise to a stability condition for the quiver bundle on X, and hence to a Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence. In the simplest case, when the flag manifold is the complex projective line, one recovers the theory of vortices, stable triples and stable chains, as studied by Bradlow, the authors, and others.

Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence, quivers, and vortices

A twisted quiver bundle is a set of holomorphic vector bundles over a complex manifold, labelled by the vertices of a quiver, linked by a set of morphisms twisted by a fixed collection of holomorphic vector bundles, labelled by the arrows. When the manifold is Kaelher, quiver bundles admit natural gauge-theoretic equations, which unify many known equations for bundles with extra structure. In this paper we prove a Hitchin--Kobayashi correspondence for twisted quiver bundles over a compact Kaehler manifold, relating the existence of solutions to the gauge equations to a stability criterion, and consider its application to a number of situations related to Higgs bundles and dimensional reductions of the Hermitian--Einstein equations.

Dimensional reduction, SL(2,C)-equivariant bundles and stable holomorphic chains

In this paper we study gauge theory on SL(2,C)-equivariant bundles over XxP^1, where X is a compact Kahler manifold, P^1 is the complex projective line, and the action of SL(2,C) is trivial on X and standard on P^1. We first classify these bundles, showing that they are in correspondence with objects on X - that we call holomorphic chains - consisting of a finite number of holomorphic bundles E_i and morphisms E_i->E_{i-1}. We then prove a Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence relating the existence of solutions to certain natural gauge-theoretic equations and an appropriate notion of stability for an equivariant bundle and the corresponding chain. A central tool in this paper is a dimensional reduction procedure which allow us to go from XxP^1 to X.
