We prove the Singer conjecture for varieties with semismall Albanese map and residually finite fundamental group.
Model order reduction usually consists of two stages: the offline stage and the online stage. The offline stage is the expensive part that sometimes takes hours till the final reduced-order model is derived, especially when the original model is very large or complex. Once the reduced-order model is obtained, the online stage of querying the reduced-order model for simulation is very fast and often real-time capable. This work concerns a strategy to significantly speed up the offline stage of model order reduction for large and complex systems. In particular, it is successful in accelerating the greedy algorithm that is often used in the offline stage for reduced-order model construction. We propose multi-fidelity error estimators and replace the high-fidelity error estimator in the greedy algorithm. Consequently, the computational complexity at each iteration of the greedy algorithm is reduced and the algorithm converges more than 3 times faster without incurring noticeable accuracy loss.
In this contribution we provide initial findings to the problem of modeling fuzzy rating responses in a psychometric modeling context. In particular, we study a probabilistic tree model with the aim of representing the stage-wise mechanisms of direct fuzzy rating scales. A Multinomial model coupled with a mixture of Binomial distributions is adopted to model the parameters of LR-type fuzzy responses whereas a binary decision tree is used for the stage-wise rating mechanism. Parameter estimation is performed via marginal maximum likelihood approach whereas the characteristics of the proposed model are evaluated by means of an application to a real dataset.
Modeling fuzziness and imprecision in human rating data is a crucial problem in many research areas, including applied statistics, behavioral, social, and health sciences. Because of the interplay between cognitive, affective, and contextual factors, the process of answering survey questions is a complex task, which can barely be captured by standard (crisp) rating responses. Fuzzy rating scales have progressively been adopted to overcome some of the limitations of standard rating scales, including their inability to disentangle decision uncertainty from individual responses. The aim of this article is to provide a novel fuzzy scaling procedure which uses Item Response Theory trees (IRTrees) as a psychometric model for the stage-wise latent response process. In so doing, fuzziness of rating data is modeled using the overall rater's pattern of responses instead of being computed using a single-item based approach. This offers a consistent system for interpreting fuzziness in terms of individual-based decision uncertainty. A simulation study and two empirical applications are adopted to assess the characteristics of the proposed model and provide converging results about its effectiveness in modeling fuzziness and imprecision in rating data.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective complex variety of maximal Albanese dimension, and let $L \to X$ be a big line bundle. We prove that the moving Seshadri constants of the pull-backs of $L$ to suitable finite abelian étale covers of $X$ are arbitrarily large. As an application, given any integer $k\geq 1$, there exists an abelian étale cover $p\colon X' \to X$ such that the adjoint system $\big|K_{X'} + p^*L \big|$ separates $k$-jets away from the augmented base locus of $p^*L$, and the exceptional locus of the pull-back of the Albanese map of $X$ under $p$.
We prove that any Fourier--Mukai partner of an abelian surface over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic is isomorphic to a moduli space of Gieseker-stable sheaves. We apply this fact to show that the Fourier--Mukai set of canonical covers of hyperelliptic and Enriques surfaces over an algebraically closed field of characteristic greater than three is trivial. These results extend to positive characteristic earlier results of Bridgeland--Maciocia and Sosna.
In this Note we prove the vanishing of (twisted) Koszul cohomology groups $K_{p,1}$ of an abelian variety with values in powers of an ample line bundle. It complements the work of G. Pareschi on the property $(N_p)$.
We provide a bound on the $Θ$-regularity of an arbitrary reduced and irreducible curve embedded in a polarized abelian variety in terms of its degree and codimension. This is an "abelian" version of Gruson-Lazarsfeld-Peskine's bound on the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of a non-degenerate curve embedded in a projective space. As an application, we provide a Castelnuovo type bound for the genus of a curve in a (non necessarily principally) polarized abelian variety. Finally, we bound the $Θ$-regularity of a class of higher dimensional subvarieties in Jacobian varieties, i.e. the Brill-Noether loci associated to a Petri general curve, extending earlier work of Pareschi-Popa.
We show that the infinitesimal deformations of the Brill--Noether locus $W_d$ attached to a smooth non-hyperelliptic curve $C$ are in one-to-one correspondence with the deformations of $C$. As an application, we prove that if a Jacobian $J$ deforms together with a minimal cohomology class out the Jacobian locus, then $J$ is hyperelliptic. In particular, this provides an evidence to a conjecture of Debarre on the classification of ppavs carrying a minimal cohomology class. Finally, we also study simultaneous deformations of Fano surfaces of lines and intermediate Jacobians.
We prove that the embedding of a $GV$-subscheme in a principally polarized abelian variety does not factor through any nontrivial isogeny. As an application, we present a new proof of a theorem of Clemens--Griffiths identifying the intermediate Jacobian of a smooth cubic threefold in $\mathbf{P}^4$ to the Albanese variety of its Fano surface of lines.
We study the behavior of cohomological support loci of the canonical bundle under derived equivalence of smooth projective varieties. This is achieved by investigating the derived invariance of a generalized version of Hochschild homology. Furthermore, using techniques coming from birational geometry, we establish the derived invariance of the Albanese dimension for varieties having non-negative Kodaira dimension. We apply our machinery to study the derived invariance of the holomorphic Euler characteristic and of certain Hodge numbers for special classes of varieties. Further applications concern the behavior of particular types of fibrations under derived equivalence.
Inspired by a theorem of Gruson-Lazarsfeld-Peskine bounding the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of curves in projective spaces, we bound the Theta-regularity of curves in polarized abelian varieties.
Based on work of R. Lazarsfeld and M. Popa, we use the derivative complex associated to the bundle of the holomorphic p-forms to provide inequalities for all the Hodge numbers of a special class of irregular compact Kaehler manifolds. For 3-folds and 4-folds we give an asymptotic bound for all the Hodge numbers in terms of the irregularity. As a byproduct, via the BGG correspondence, we also bound the regularity of the exterior cohomology modules of bundles of holomorphic p-forms.
