A global method for deterministic and stochastic homogenisation in $BV$

In this paper we study the deterministic and stochastic homogenisation of free-discontinuity functionals under \emph{linear} growth and coercivity conditions. The main novelty of our deterministic result is that we work under very general assumptions on the integrands which, in particular, are not required to be periodic in the space variable. Combining this result with the pointwise Subadditive Ergodic Theorem by Akcoglu and Krengel, we prove a stochastic homogenisation result, in the case of stationary random integrands. In particular, we characterise the limit integrands in terms of asymptotic cell formulas, as in the classical case of periodic homogenisation.

Stochastic homogenisation of free-discontinuity functionals in random perforated domains

In this paper we study the asymptotic behaviour of a family of random free-discontinuity energies $E_\varepsilon$ defined on a randomly perforated domain, as $\varepsilon$ goes to zero. The functionals $E_\varepsilon$ model the energy associated to displacements of porous random materials that can develop cracks. To gain compactness for sequences of displacements with bounded energies, we need to overcome the lack of equi-coerciveness of the functionals. We do so by means of an extension result, under the assumption that the random perforations cannot come too close to one another. The limit energy is then obtained in two steps. As a first step we apply a general result of stochastic convergence of free-discontinuity functionals to a modified, coercive version of $E_\varepsilon$. Then the effective volume and surface energy densities are identified by means of a careful limit procedure.

Boundary-layer analysis of a pile-up of walls of edge dislocations at a lock

In this paper we analyse the behaviour of a pile-up of vertically periodic walls of edge dislocations at an obstacle, represented by a locked dislocation wall. Starting from a continuum non-local energy $E_γ$ modelling the interactions$-$at a typical length-scale of $1/γ$$-$of the walls subjected to a constant shear stress, we derive a first-order approximation of the energy $E_γ$ in powers of $1/γ$ by $Γ$-convergence, in the limit $γ\to\infty$. While the zero-order term in the expansion, the $Γ$-limit of $E_γ$, captures the `bulk' profile of the density of dislocation walls in the pile-up domain, the first-order term in the expansion is a `boundary-layer' energy that captures the profile of the density in the proximity of the lock. This study is a first step towards a rigorous understanding of the behaviour of dislocations at obstacles, defects, and grain boundaries.

Convergence of interaction-driven evolutions of dislocations with Wasserstein dissipation and slip-plane confinement

We consider systems of $n$ parallel edge dislocations in a single slip system, represented by points in a two-dimensional domain; the elastic medium is modelled as a continuum. We formulate the energy of this system in terms of the empirical measure of the dislocations, and prove several convergence results in the limit $n\to\infty$. The main aim of the paper is to study the convergence of the evolution of the empirical measure as $n\to\infty$. We consider rate-independent, quasi-static evolutions, in which the motion of the dislocations is restricted to the same slip plane. This leads to a formulation of the quasi-static evolution problem in terms of a modified Wasserstein distance, which is only finite when the transport plan is slip-plane-confined. Since the focus is on interaction between dislocations, we renormalize the elastic energy to remove the potentially large self- or core energy. We prove Gamma-convergence of this renormalized energy, and we construct joint recovery sequences for which both the energies and the modified distances converge. With this augmented Gamma-convergence we prove the convergence of the quasi-static evolutions as $n\to\infty$.

Asymptotic behaviour of a pile-up of infinite walls of edge dislocations

We consider a system of parallel straight edge dislocations and we analyse its asymptotic behaviour in the limit of many dislocations. The dislocations are represented by points in a plane, and they are arranged in vertical walls; each wall is free to move in the horizontal direction. The system is described by a discrete energy depending on the one-dimensional horizontal positions of the n walls; the energy contains contributions from repulsive pairwise interactions between all walls, a global shear stress forcing the walls to the left, and a pinned wall at x=0 that prevents the walls from leaving through the left boundary. We study the behaviour of the energy as the number n of walls tends to infinity, and characterise this behaviour in terms of Gamma-convergence. There are five different cases, depending on the asymptotic behaviour of a single dimensionless parameter. As a consequence we obtain characterisations of the limiting behaviour of stationary states in each of these five regimes. The results shed new light on the open problem of upscaling large numbers of dislocations. We show how various existing upscaled models arise as special cases of the theorems of this paper. The wide variety of behaviour suggests that upscaled models should incorporate more information than just dislocation densities. This additional information is encoded in the limit of the dimensionless parameter.

Mechanics of dislocation pile-ups: A unification of scaling regimes

This paper unravels the problem of an idealised pile-up of n infinite, equi-spaced walls of edge dislocations at equilibrium. We define a dimensionless parameter that depends on the geometric, constitutive and loading parameters of the problem, and we identify five different scaling regimes corresponding to different values of that parameter for large n. For each of the cases we perform a rigorous micro-to-meso upscaling, and we obtain five expressions for the mesoscopic (continuum) internal stress. We recover some expressions for the internal stress that are already in use in the mechanical community, as well as some new models. The results in this paper offer a unifying approach to such models, since they can be viewed as the outcome of the same discrete dislocation setup, for different values of the dimensionless parameter (i.e., for different local dislocations arrangements). In addition, the rigorous nature of the upscaling removes the need for ad hoc assumptions.
