Relativistic spin dynamics for vector mesons

We propose a relativistic theory for spin density matrices of vector mesons based on Kadanoff-Baym equations in the closed-time-path formalism. The theory puts the calculation of spin observables such as the spin density matrix element $ρ_{00}$ for vector mesons on a solid ground. Within the theory we formulate $ρ_{00}$ for $ϕ$ mesons into a factorization form in separation of momentum and space-time variables. We argue that the main contribution to $ρ_{00}$ at lower energies should be from the $ϕ$ fields that can polarize the strange quark and antiquark in the same way as electromagnetic fields. The key observation is that there is correlation inside the $ϕ$ meson wave function between the $ϕ$ field that polarizes the strange quark and that polarizes the strange antiquark. This is reflected by the fact that the contributions to $ρ_{00}$ are all in squares of fields which are nonvanishing even if the fields may strongly fluctuate in space-time. The fluctuation of strong force fields can be extracted from $ρ_{00}$ of quarkonium vector mesons as links to fundamental properties of quantum chromodynamics.

What can we learn from global spin alignment of $ϕ$ meson in heavy-ion collisions?

We propose that a significant positive deviation from 1/3 for the spin density matrix element $ρ_{00}$ of the $ϕ$ meson may indicate the existence of a mean field of the $ϕ$ meson generated in heavy-ion collisions. This explains why STAR preliminary data for the $ϕ$ meson's $ρ_{00}$ are much larger than 1/3 while the data of $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ polarization seem not to allow such a significant and positive deviation. The contribution may be from the polarization of the strange quark and antiquark through the $ϕ$ field, an effective mode of the gluon field in strong interaction. We show that $ρ_{00}$ for the $ϕ$ meson is a good analyzer for fields even if they may strongly fluctuate in space-time.

Influence of electromagnetic fields in proton-nucleus collisions at relativistic energy

We study proton-gold collisions at RHIC energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV within the Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) off-shell transport approach, investigating the influence of the intense electromagnetic fields generated in these small systems. We show the space-time evolution of the magnetic and electric components, emphasizing the huge values of the latter one, in particular the electric field $E_x$ along the impact parameter direction whose magnitude is comparable to the magnetic field $B_y$ perpendicular to the reaction plane. We find a fair agreement of the charged particle pseudorapidity density of the high-multiplicity events with respect to the experimental result of the PHENIX Collaboration. Focusing on the most central collision, we show rapidity distributions and spectra as well as the flow coefficients $v_1$ and $v_2$ and we discuss the impact of the electromagnetic fields on identified particle observables. We compute the directed flow $v_1$ of $π^+$, $π^-$, $K^+$, $K^-$ for collisions at fixed impact parameter and predict that an electromagnetically-induced splitting in the $v_1$ of positively and negatively charged particles is generated in the Au-going side of p+Au reaction mainly driven by the huge $E_x$ component. We find that this effect is stronger for the strange mesons and increases for increasing impact parameter. Furthermore, we highlight the amount of directed flow generated in the deconfined phase, finding that it constitutes the main contribution in the central rapidity region, especially for kaons. Thus, we support the idea that the directed flow is a promising probe for the electromagnetic fields generated in relativistic nuclear collisions and show that in proton-induced reactions the electric component along the impact parameter axis is the primary origin of a charge-odd $v_1$ of pions and kaons.

Thermodynamics of the Quark-Gluon Plasma in Terms of Quasiparticles and Polyakov Line Condensates

We study a model of quark-gluon plasma of 2+1 flavors Quantum Chromodynamics in terms of quasiparticles propagating in a condensate of Polyakov loops. The Polyakov loop is coupled to quasiparticles by means of a gas-like effective potential. This study is useful to identify the effective degrees of freedom propagating in the medium above the critical temperature. Our finding is that a dominant part of the phase transition dynamics is accounted for by the Polyakov loop, hence the thermodynamics can be described without the need for rapidly increasing quasiparticle masses as $T \rightarrow T_c$, at variance respect to standard quasiparticle models.
