Nonquadratic global asymptotic stability certificates for saturated linear feedbacks

We establish sufficient conditions for positive (semi-)definiteness, with or without radial unboundedness, for nonquadratic Lyapunov function constructed as sign-indefinite quadratic forms involving the state and the deadzone of a suitable input. We then use these conditions to build weak nonquadratic Lyapunov functions establishing global asymptotic stability of linear systems in feedback through a saturation, leveraging invariance principles. Our results are shown to be non-conservative (necessary and sufficient) for a family of well known prototypical examples of linear SISO feedbacks that are not globally exponentially stabilizable (the so-called ANCBI plants). Our multi-input extension leads to convex stability analysis tests, formulated as linear matrix inequalities that are applicable to ANCBI non-globally-exponentially-stabilizable plants.

Global asymptotic stability of a PID control system with Coulomb friction

We propose a model for representing a point mass subject to Coulomb friction in feedback with a PID controller, based on a differential inclusion comprising all the possible magnitudes of static friction during the stick phase. For this model we study the set of all equilibria and we establish its global asymptotic stability using a discontinuous Lyapunov-like function, and a suitable LaSalle's invariance principle. We finally use well-posedness of the proposed model to establish useful robustness results, including an ISS property from a suitable input in a perturbed context. Simulation results are also given to illustrate our statements.

Hierarchical stability of nonlinear hybrid systems

In this short note we prove a hierarchical stability result that applies to hybrid dynamical systems satisfying the hybrid basic conditions of (Goebel et al., 2012). In particular, we establish sufficient conditions for uniform asymptotic stability of a compact set based on some hierarchical stability assumptions involving two nested closed sets containing such a compact set. Moreover, mimicking the well known result for cascaded systems, we prove that the basin of attraction of such compact set coincides with the largest set from which all solutions are bounded. The result appears to be useful when applied to several recent works involving hierarchical control architectures.

Robust linear static anti-windup with probabilistic certificates

In this paper, we address robust static anti-windup compensator design and performance analysis for saturated linear closed loops in the presence of nonlinear probabilistic parameter uncertainties via randomized techniques. The proposed static anti-windup analysis and robust performance synthesis correspond to several optimization goals, ranging from minimization of the nonlinear input/output gain to maximization of the stability region or maximization of the domain of attraction. We also introduce a novel paradigm accounting for uncertainties in the energy of the disturbance inputs. Due to the special structure of linear static anti-windup design, wherein the design variables are decoupled from the Lyapunov certificates, we introduce a significant extension, called scenario with certificates (SwC), of the so-called scenario approach for uncertain optimization problems. This extension is of independent interest for similar robust synthesis problems involving parameter-dependent Lyapunov functions. We demonstrate that the scenario with certificates robust design formulation is appealing because it provides a way to implicitly design the parameter-dependent Lyapunov functions and to remove restrictive assumptions about convexity with respect to the uncertain parameters. Subsequently, to reduce the computational cost, we present a sequential randomized algorithm for iteratively solving this problem. The obtained results are illustrated by numerical examples.

Global results on reset-induced periodic trajectories of planar systems

We study the existence of asymptotically stable periodic trajectories induced by reset feedback. The analysis is developed for a planar system. Casting the problem into the hybrid setting, we show that a periodic orbit arises from the balance between the energy dissipated during flows and the energy restored by resets, at jumps. The stability of the periodic orbit is studied with hybrid Lyapunov tools. The satisfaction of the so-called hybrid basic conditions ensures the robustness of the asymptotic stability. Extensions of the approach to more general mechanical systems are discussed.

Scenario optimization with certificates and applications to anti-windup design

In this paper, we introduce a significant extension, called scenario with certificates (SwC), of the so-called scenario approach for uncertain optimization problems. This extension is motivated by the observation that in many control problems only some of the optimization variables are used in the design phase, while the other variables play the role of certificates. Examples are all those control problems that can be reformulated in terms of linear matrix inequalities involving parameter-dependent Lyapunov functions. These control problems include static anti-windup compensator design for uncertain linear systems with input saturation, where the goal is the minimization of the nonlinear gain from an exogenous input to a performance output. The main contribution of this paper is to show that randomization is a useful tool, specifically for anti-windup design, to make the overall approach less conservative compared to its robust counterpart. In particular, we demonstrate that the scenario with certificates reformulation is appealing because it provides a way to implicitly design the parameter-dependent Lyapunov functions. Finally, to further reduce the computational cost of this one-shot approach, we present a sequential randomized algorithm for iteratively solving this problem.

Design of Marx generators as a structured eigenvalue assignment

We consider the design problem for a Marx generator electrical network, a pulsed power generator. The engineering specification of the design is that a suitable resonance condition is satisfied by the circuit so that the energy initially stored in a number of storage capacitors is transferred in finite time to a single load capacitor which can then store the total energy and deliver the pulse. We show that the components design can be conveniently cast as a structured real eigenvalue assignment with significantly lower dimension than the state size of the Marx circuit. Then we comment on the nontrivial nature of this structured real eigenvalue assignment problem and present two possible approaches to determine its solutions. A first symbolic approach consists in the use of Gröbner basis representations, which allows us to compute all the (finitely many) solutions. A second approach is based on convexification of a nonconvex optimization problem with polynomial constraints. We show that the symbolic method easily provides solutions for networks up to six stages while the numerical method can reach up to seven and eight stages. We also comment on the conjecture that for any number of stages the problem has finitely many solutions, which is a necessary assumption for the proposed methods to converge. We regard the proof of this conjecture as an interesting challenge of general interest in the real algebraic geometry field.

Event-triggered transmission for linear control over communication channels

We consider an exponentially stable closed loop interconnection of a continuous linear plant and a continuous linear controller, and we study the problem of interconnecting the plant output to the controller input through a digital channel. We propose a family of "transmission-lazy" sensors whose goal is to transmit the measured plant output information as little as possible while preserving closed-loop stability. In particular, we propose two transmission policies, providing conditions on the transmission parameters. These guarantee global asymptotic stability when the plant state is available or when an estimate of the state is available (provided by a classical continuous linear observer). Moreover, under a specific condition, they guarantee global exponential stability
