Existence and uniqueness of minimizers for axisymmetric nematic films

Nematic surfaces are thin liquid films endowed with in-plane orientational order. We study a variational model in which the nematic director is constrained to lie in the tangent space of an axisymmetric surface, and the associated surface energy accounts for both surface tension and elastic nematic contributions. Here we adopt the surface gradient as the differential operator on the surface, we restrict our analysis to revolution surfaces spanning two coaxial rings, and we assume that the nematic director is aligned along parallels. In this setting, the energy functional reduces to a one-dimensional variational problem. We rigorously prove the existence and uniqueness of minimizers and we provide their complete geometric characterization. Finally, we run some numerical simulations.

Direct minimization of the Canham--Helfrich energy on generalized Gauss graphs

The existence of minimizers of the Canham--Helfrich functional in the setting of generalized Gauss graphs is proved. As a first step, the Canham--Helfrich functional, usually defined on regular surfaces, is extended to generalized Gauss graphs, then lower semicontinuity and compactness are proved under a suitable condition on the bending constants ensuring coerciveness; the minimization follows by the direct methods of the Calculus of Variations. Remarks on the regularity of minimizers and on the behavior of the functional in case there is lack of coerciveness are presented.

Existence of varifold minimizers for the multiphase Canham-Helfrich functional

We address the minimization of the Canham-Helfrich functional in presence of multiple phases. The problem is inspired by the modelization of heterogeneous biological membranes, which may feature variable bending rigidities and spontaneous curvatures. With respect to previous contributions, no symmetry of the minimizers is here assumed. Correspondingly, the problem is reformulated and solved in the weaker frame of oriented curvature varifolds. We present a lower semicontinuity result and prove existence of single- and multiphase minimizers under area and enclosed-volume constrains. Additionally, we discuss regularity of minimizers and establish lower and upper diameter bounds.

Gamma convergence of a family of surface--director bending energies with small tilt

We prove a Gamma-convergence result for a family of bending energies defined on smooth surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ equipped with a director field. The energies strongly penalize the deviation of the director from the surface unit normal and control the derivatives of the director. Such type of energies for example arise in a model for bilayer membranes introduced by Peletier and Röger [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 193 (2009)]. Here we prove in three space dimensions in the vanishing-tilt limit a Gamma-liminf estimate with respect to a specific curvature energy. In order to obtain appropriate compactness and lower semi-continuity properties we use tools from geometric measure theory, in particular the concept of generalized Gauss graphs and curvature varifolds.

Variational analysis of a mesoscale model for bilayer membranes

We present an asymptotic analysis of a mesoscale energy for bilayer membranes that has been introduced and analyzed in two space dimensions by the second and third author (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 193, 2009). The energy is both non-local and non-convex. It combines a surface area and a Monge-Kantorovich-distance term, leading to a competition between preferences for maximally concentrated and maximally dispersed configurations. Here we extend key results of our previous analysis to the three dimensional case. First we prove a general lower estimate and formally identify a curvature energy in the zero-thickness limit. Secondly we construct a recovery sequence and prove a matching upper-bound estimate.
