Exact $T\overline{T}$ deformation of two-dimensional Maxwell theory

$T\overline{T}$-deformed two-dimensional quantum Maxwell theory on the torus is examined, taking into account nonperturbative effects in the deformation parameter $μ$. We study the deformed partition function solving the relevant flow equation at the level of individual flux sectors. Summing exactly the "instanton" series, we obtain a well-defined expression for the partition function at arbitrary $μ$. For $μ>0$, the quantum spectrum of the theory experiences a truncation, the partition function reducing to a sum over a finite set of positive-energy states. For $μ<0$ instead, the appearance of nonperturbative contributions in $μ$ drastically modifies the structure of the partition function, regularizing its naive divergences through instanton-like subtractions. For each flux sector, we show that the semiclassical contribution is dominated by the deformed classical action. The theory is observed to undergo infinite-order phase transitions for certain values of $μ$, associated with the vanishing of Polyakov-loop correlators.

Nonperturbative effects and resurgence in JT gravity at finite cutoff

We investigate the nonperturbative structure of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity at finite cutoff, as given by its proposed formulation in terms of a $T\bar{T}$-deformed Schwarzian quantum mechanics. Our starting point is a careful computation of the disk partition function to all orders in the perturbative expansion in the cutoff parameter. We show that the perturbative series is asymptotic and that it admits a precise completion exploiting the analytical properties of its Borel transform, as prescribed by resurgence theory. The final result is then naturally interpreted in terms of the nonperturbative branch of the $T\bar{T}$-deformed spectrum. The finite-cutoff trumpet partition function is computed by applying the same strategy. In the second part of the paper, we propose an extension of this formalism to arbitrary topologies, using the basic gluing rules of the undeformed case. The Weil-Petersson integrations can be safely performed due to the nonperturbative corrections and give results that are compatible with the flow equation associated with the $T\bar{T}$ deformation. We derive exact expressions for general topologies and show that these are captured by a suitable deformation of the Eynard-Orantin topological recursion. Finally, we study the "slope" and "ramp" regimes of the spectral form factor as functions of the cutoff parameter.

On the perturbative expansion of exact bi-local correlators in JT gravity

We study the perturbative series associated to bi-local correlators in Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity, for positive weight $λ$ of the matter CFT operators. Starting from the known exact expression, derived by CFT and gauge theoretical methods, we reproduce the Schwarzian semiclassical expansion beyond leading order. The computation is done for arbitrary temperature and finite boundary distances, in the case of disk and trumpet topologies. A formula presenting the perturbative result (for $λ\in \mathbb{N}/2$) at any given order in terms of generalized Apostol-Bernoulli polynomials is also obtained. The limit of zero temperature is then considered, obtaining a compact expression that allows to discuss the asymptotic behaviour of the perturbative series. Finally we highlight the possibility to express the exact result as particular combinations of Mordell integrals.

Analytic bootstrap and Witten diagrams for the ABJM Wilson line as defect CFT$_1$

We study local operator insertions on 1/2-BPS line defects in ABJM theory. Specifically, we consider a class of four-point correlators in the CFT$_1$ with SU$(1, 1|3)$ superconformal symmetry defined on the 1/2-BPS Wilson line. The relevant insertions belong to the short supermultiplet containing the displacement operator and correspond to fluctuations of the dual fundamental string in AdS$_4 \times \mathbb{C}\textrm{P}^3$ ending on the line at the boundary. We use superspace techniques to represent the displacement supermultiplet and we show that superconformal symmetry determines the four-point correlators of its components in terms of a single function of the one-dimensional cross-ratio. Such function is highly constrained by crossing and internal consistency, allowing us to use an analytical bootstrap approach to find the first subleading correction at strong coupling. Finally, we use AdS/CFT to compute the same four-point functions through tree-level AdS$_2$ Witten diagrams, producing a result that is perfectly consistent with the bootstrap solution.

Roadmap on Wilson loops in 3d Chern-Simons-matter theories

This is a compact review of recent results on supersymmetric Wilson loops in ABJ(M) and related theories. It aims to be a quick introduction to the state of the art in the field and a discussion of open problems. It is divided into short chapters devoted to different questions and techniques. Some new results, perspectives and speculations are also presented. We hope this might serve as a baseline for further studies of this topic.

Framing and localization in Chern-Simons theories with matter

Supersymmetric localization provides exact results that should match QFT computations in some regularization scheme. The agreement is particularly subtle in three dimensions where complex answers from localization procedure sometimes arise. We investigate this problem by studying the expectation value of the 1/6 BPS Wilson loop in planar ABJ(M) theory at three loops in perturbation theory. We reproduce the corresponding term in the localization result and argue that it originates entirely from a non-trivial framing of the circular contour. Contrary to pure Chern-Simons theory, we point out that for ABJ(M) the framing phase is a non-trivial function of the couplings and that it potentially receives contributions from vertex-like diagrams. Finally, we briefly discuss the intimate link between the exact framing factor and the Bremsstrahlung function of the 1/2-BPS cusp.

Surprises from the resummation of ladders in the ABJ(M) cusp anomalous dimension

We study the cusp anomalous dimension in N=6 ABJ(M) theory, identifying a scaling limit in which the ladder diagrams dominate. The resummation is encoded into a Bethe-Salpeter equation that is mapped to a Schroedinger problem, exactly solvable due to the surprising supersymmetry of the effective Hamiltonian. In the ABJ case the solution implies the diagonalization of the U(N) and U(M) building blocks, suggesting the existence of two independent cusp anomalous dimensions and an unexpected exponentiation structure for the related Wilson loops. While consistent with previous perturbative analysis, the strong coupling limit of our result does not agree with the string theory computation, emphasizing a difference with the analogous resummation in the N=4 case.

The quantum 1/2 BPS Wilson loop in ${\cal N}=4$ Chern-Simons-matter theories

In three dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ Chern-Simons-matter theories two independent fermionic Wilson loop operators can be defined, which preserve half of the supersymmetry charges and are cohomologically equivalent at classical level. We compute their three-loop expectation value in a convenient color sector and prove that the degeneracy is uplifted by quantum corrections. We expand the matrix model prediction in the same regime and by comparison we conclude that the quantum 1/2 BPS Wilson loop is the average of the two operators. We provide an all-loop argument to support this claim at any order. As a by-product, we identify the localization result at three loops as a correction to the framing factor induced by matter interactions. Finally, we comment on the quantum properties of the non-1/2 BPS Wilson loop operator defined as the difference of the two fermionic ones.

Bremsstrahlung function, leading Luscher correction at weak coupling and localization

We discuss the near BPS expansion of the generalized cusp anomalous dimension with L units of R-charge. Integrability provides an exact solution, obtained by solving a general TBA equation in the appropriate limit: we propose here an alternative method based on supersymmetric localization. The basic idea is to relate the computation to the vacuum expectation value of certain 1/8 BPS Wilson loops with local operator insertions along the contour. These observables localize on a two-dimensional gauge theory on S^2, opening the possibility of exact calculations. As a test of our proposal, we reproduce the leading Luscher correction at weak coupling to the generalized cusp anomalous dimension. This result is also checked against a genuine Feynman diagram approach in N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory.

Probing Wilson loops in ${\cal N}=4$ Chern-Simons-matter theories at weak coupling

For three-dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ super Chern-Simons-matter theories associated to necklace quivers $U(N_0) \times U(N_1) \times \cdots U(N_{2r-1}) $, we study at quantum level the two kinds of 1/2 BPS Wilson loop operators recently introduced in arXiv:1506.07614. We perform a two-loop evaluation and find the same result for the two kinds of operators, so moving to higher loops a possible quantum uplift of the classical degeneracy. We also compute the 1/4 BPS bosonic Wilson loop and discuss the quantum version of the cohomological equivalence between fermionic and bosonic Wilson loops. We compare the perturbative result with the Matrix Model prediction and find perfect matching, after identification and remotion of a suitable framing factor. Finally, we discuss the potential appearance of three-loop contributions that might break the classical degeneracy and briefly analyse possible implications on the BPS nature of these operators.

A novel cross-check of localization and non conformal holography

We precisely reproduce the perimeter law obeyed by Wilson loops on large spatial contours in planar N=2 SYM at strong coupling, as recently deduced using localization, by means of a dual holographic model. The relevant supergravity background is sourced by D5-branes wrapped on a two-sphere in a Calabi-Yau two-manifold. Thus, localization and holography are cross-checked, for the first time, in a non conformal context where the gravity background is not asymptotically Anti de Sitter and the dual gauge theory has a logarithmically running coupling. We also notice that the same cross-check can be performed considering an alternative holographic description of N=2 SYM based on a background sourced by fractional D3-branes.

BPS Wilson loops and Bremsstrahlung function in ABJ(M): a two loop analysis

We study a family of circular BPS Wilson loops in N=6 super Chern-Simons-matter theories, generalizing the usual 1/2-BPS circle. The scalar and fermionic couplings depend on two deformation parameters and these operators can be considered as the ABJ(M) counterpart of the DGRT latitudes defined in N=4 SYM. We perform a complete two-loop analysis of their vacuum expectation value, discuss the framing dependence and propose a general relation with cohomologically equivalent bosonic operators. We make an all-loop proposal for computing the Bremsstrahlung function associated to the 1/2-BPS cusp in terms of these generalized Wilson loops. When applied to our two-loop result it reproduces the known expression. Finally, we comment on the generalization of this proposal to the bosonic 1/6-BPS case.

Correlators of chiral primaries and 1/8 BPS Wilson loops from perturbation theory

We study at perturbative level the correlation functions of a general class of 1/8 BPS Wilson loops and chiral primaries in N = 4 Super Yang-Mills theory. The contours and the location of operator insertions share a sphere S^2 embedded into spacetime and the system preserves at least two supercharges. We perform explicit two-loop computations, for some particular but still rather general configuration, that confirm the elegant results expected from localization procedure. We find notably full consistency with the multi-matrix model averages, obtained from 2D Yang-Mills theory on the sphere, when interacting diagrams do not cancel and contribute non-trivially to the final answer.

Perturbative evaluation of circular 1/2 BPS Wilson loops in N = 6 Super Chern-Simons theories

We present a complete two-loop analysis of the quantum expectation value for circular BPS Wilson loops in ABJ(M) theories. We examine in details the 1/2 BPS case, that requires non-trivial fermionic couplings with the contour, finding perfect agreement with the exact matrix model answer at zero framing. The result is obtained through a careful application of DRED regularization scheme, combined with a judicious rearrangement of the relevant perturbative contributions that reduces the computation to simple integrals. We carefully analyze the contribution of fermions that is crucial for the consistency with the localization procedure and point out the arising of pivotal evanescent terms, discussing their meaning in relation to Ward identities.

The generalized cusp in ABJ(M) N = 6 Super Chern-Simons theories

We construct a generalized cusped Wilson loop operator in N = 6 super Chern-Simons-matter theories which is locally invariant under half of the supercharges. It depends on two parameters and interpolates smoothly between the 1/2 BPS line or circle and a pair of antiparallel lines, representing a natural generalization of the quark-antiquark potential in ABJ(M) theories. For particular choices of the parameters we obtain 1/6 BPS configurations that, mapped on S^2 by a conformal transformation, realize a three-dimensional analogue of the wedge DGRT Wilson loop of N = 4. The cusp couples, in addition to the gauge and scalar fields of the theory, also to the fermions in the bifundamental representation of the U(N)xU(M) gauge group and its expectation value is expressed as the holonomy of a suitable superconnection. We discuss the definition of these observables in terms of traces and the role of the boundary conditions of fermions along the loop. We perform a complete two-loop analysis, obtaining an explicit result for the generalized cusp at the second non-trivial order, from which we read off the interaction potential between heavy 1/2 BPS particles in the ABJ(M) model. Our results open the possibility to explore in the three-dimensional case the connection between localization properties and integrability, recently advocated in D = 4.

Correlators of Hopf Wilson loops in the AdS/CFT correspondence

We study at quantum level correlators of supersymmetric Wilson loops with contours lying on Hopf fibers of $S^3$. In $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory the strong coupling analysis can be performed using the AdS/CFT correspondence and a connected classical string surface, linking two different fibers, is presented. More precisely, the string solution describes oppositely oriented fibers with the same scalar coupling and depends on an angular parameter, interpolating between a non-BPS configuration and a BPS one. The system can be thought as an alternative deformation of the ordinary antiparallel lines giving the static quark-antiquark potential, that is indeed correctly reproduced, at weak and strong coupling, as the fibers approach one another.

Impure Aspects of Supersymmetric Wilson Loops

We study a general class of supersymmetric Wilson loops operator in N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory, obtained as orbits of conformal transformations. These loops are the natural generalization of the familiar circular Wilson-Maldacena operator and their supersymmetric properties are encoded into a Killing spinor that is not pure. We present a systematic analysis of their scalar couplings and of the preserved supercharges, modulo the action of the global symmetry group, both in the compact and in the non-compact case. The quantum behavior of their expectation value is also addressed, in the simplest case of the Lissajous contours: explicit computations at weak-coupling, through Feynman diagrams expansion, and at strong-coupling, by means of AdS/CFT correspondence, suggest the possibility of an exact evaluation.

Correlators of supersymmetric Wilson loops at weak and strong coupling

We continue our study of the correlators of a recently discovered family of BPS Wilson loops in N=4 supersymmetric U(N) Yang-Mills theory. We perform explicit computations at weak coupling by means of analytical and numerical methods finding agreement with the exact formula derived from localization. In particular we check the localization prediction at order g^6 for different BPS "latitude" configurations, the N=4 perturbative expansion reproducing the expected results within a relative error of 10^(-4). On the strong coupling side we present a supergravity evaluation of the 1/8 BPS correlator in the limit of large separation, taking into account the exchange of all relevant modes between the string world-sheets. While reproducing the correct geometrical dependence, we find that the associated coefficient does not match the localization result.

Chern-Simons theory on L(p,q) lens spaces and Gopakumar-Vafa duality

We consider aspects of Chern-Simons theory on L(p,q) lens spaces and its relation with matrix models and topological string theory on Calabi-Yau threefolds, searching for possible new large N dualities via geometric transition for non-SU(2) cyclic quotients of the conifold. To this aim we find, on one hand, some novel matrix integral representations of the SU(N) CS partition function in a generic flat background for the whole L(p,q) family and provide a solution for its large N dynamics; on the other, we perform in full detail the construction of a family of would-be dual closed string backgrounds via conifold geometric transition from T^*L(p,q). We can then explicitly prove that Gopakumar-Vafa duality in a fixed vacuum fails in the case q>1, and briefly discuss how it could be restored in a non-perturbative setting.

Supersymmetric Wilson loops at two loops

We study the quantum properties of certain BPS Wilson loops in ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. They belong to a general family, introduced recently, in which the addition of particular scalar couplings endows generic loops on $S^3$ with a fraction of supersymmetry. When restricted to $S^2$, their quantum average has been further conjectured to be exactly computed by the matrix model governing the zero-instanton sector of YM$_2$ on the sphere. We perform a complete two-loop analysis on a class of cusped Wilson loops lying on a two-dimensional sphere, finding perfect agreement with the conjecture. The perturbative computation reproduces the matrix-model expectation through a highly non-trivial interplay between ladder diagrams and self-energies/vertex contributions, suggesting the existence of a localization procedure.

Topological strings and large N phase transitions II: Chiral expansion of q-deformed Yang-Mills theory

We continue our study of the large N phase transition in q-deformed Yang-Mills theory on the sphere and its role in connecting topological strings to black hole entropy. We study in detail the chiral theory defined in terms of uncoupled single U(N) representations at large N and write down the resulting partition function by means of the topological vertex. The emergent toric geometry has three Kaehler parameters, one of which corresponds to the expected fibration over the sphere. By taking a suitable double-scaling limit we recover the chiral Gross-Taylor string expansion. To analyse the phase transition we construct a matrix model which describes the chiral gauge theory. It has three distinct phases, one of which should be described by the closed topological string expansion. We verify this expectation by explicit comparison between the matrix model and the chiral topological string free energies. We also show that the critical point in the pertinent phase of the matrix model corresponds to a divergence of the topological string perturbation series.

Instantons, Fluxons and Open Gauge String Theory

We use the exact instanton expansion to illustrate various string characteristics of noncommutative gauge theory in two dimensions. We analyse the spectrum of the model and present some evidence in favour of Hagedorn and fractal behaviours. The decompactification limit of noncommutative torus instantons is shown to map in a very precise way, at both the classical and quantum level, onto fluxon solutions on the noncommutative plane. The weak-coupling singularities of the usual Gross-Taylor string partition function for QCD on the torus are studied in the instanton representation and its double scaling limit, appropriate for the mapping onto noncommutative gauge theory, is shown to be a generating function for the volumes of the principal moduli spaces of holomorphic differentials. The noncommutative deformation of this moduli space geometry is described and appropriate open string interpretations are proposed in terms of the fluxon expansion.

Covariant Anomalies and Functional Determinants

We analize the algebraic structure of consistent and covariant anomalies in gauge and gravitational theories: using a complex extension of the Lie algebra it is possible to describe them in a unified way. Then we study their representations by means of functional determinants, showing how the algebraic solution determines the relevant operators for the definition of the effective action. Particular attention is devoted to the Lorentz anomaly: we obtain by functional methods the covariant anomaly for the spin-current and for the energy-momentum tensor in presence of a curved background. With regard to the consistent sector we are able to give a general functional solution only for $d=2$: using the characterization derived from the extended algebra, we find a continuous family of operators whose determinant describes the effective action of chiral spinors in curved space. We compute this action and we generalize the result in presence of a $U(1)$ gauge connection. Accepted for publication in Fortschritte der Physik.
