Diffusion through permeable interfaces: Fundamental equations and their application to first-passage and local time statistics

The diffusion equation is the primary tool to study the movement dynamics of a free Brownian particle, but when spatial heterogeneities in the form of permeable interfaces are present, no fundamental equation has been derived. Here we obtain such an equation from a microscopic description using a lattice random walk model. The sought after Fokker-Planck description and the corresponding backward Kolmogorov equation are employed to investigate first-passage and local time statistics and gain new insights. Among them a surprising phenomenon, in the case of a semibounded domain, is the appearance of a regime of dependence and independence on the location of the permeable barrier in the mean first-passage time. The new formalism is completely general: it allows to study the dynamics in the presence of multiple permeable barriers as well as reactive heterogeneities in bounded or unbounded domains and under the influence of external forces.

Dynamics of lattice random walk within regions composed of different media and interfaces

We study the lattice random walk dynamics in a heterogeneous space of two media separated by an interface and having different diffusivity and bias. Depending on the position of the interface, there exist two exclusive ways to model the dynamics: (1) Type A dynamics whereby the interface is placed between two lattice points, and (2) Type B dynamics whereby the interface is placed on a lattice point. For both types, we obtain exact results for the one-dimensional generating function of the Green's function or propagator for the composite system in unbounded domain as well as domains confined with reflecting, absorbing, and mixed boundaries. For the case with reflecting confinement in the absence of bias, the steady-state probability shows a step-like behavior for the Type A dynamics, while it is uniform for the Type B dynamics. We also derive explicit expressions for the first-passage probability and the mean first-passage time, and compare the hitting time dependence to a single target. Finally, considering the continuous-space continuous-time limit of the propagator, we obtain the boundary conditions at the interface. At the interface, while the flux is the same, the probability density is discontinuous for Type A and is continuous for Type B. For the latter we derive a generalized version of the so-called leather boundary condition in the appropriate limit.

Anderson-like localization transition of random walks with resetting

We study several lattice random walk models with stochastic resetting to previously visited sites which exhibit a phase transition between an anomalous diffusive regime and a localization regime where diffusion is suppressed. The localized phase settles above a critical resetting rate, or rate of memory use, and the probability density asymptotically adopts in this regime a non-equilibrium steady state similar to that of the well known problem of diffusion with resetting to the origin. The transition occurs because of the presence of a single impurity site where the resetting rate is lower than on other sites, and around which the walker spontaneously localizes. Near criticality, the localization length diverges with a critical exponent that falls in the same class as the self-consistent theory of Anderson localization of waves in random media. The critical dimensions are also the same in both problems. Our study provides analytically tractable examples of localization transitions in path-dependent, reinforced stochastic processes, which can be also useful for understanding spatial learning by living organisms.

Encounter times in overlapping domains: application to epidemic spread in a population of territorial animals

We develop an analytical method to calculate encounter times of two random walkers in one dimension when each individual is segregated in its own spatial domain and shares with its neighbor only a fraction of the available space, finding very good agreement with numerically-exact calculations. We model a population of susceptible and infected territorial individuals with this spatial arrangement, and which may transmit an epidemic when they meet. We apply the results on encounter times to determine analytically the macroscopic propagation speed of the epidemic as a function of the microscopic characteristics: the confining geometry, the animal diffusion constant, and the infection transmission probability.

An anti-symmetric exclusion process for two particles on an infinite 1D lattice

A system of two biased, mutually exclusive random walkers on an infinite 1D lattice is studied whereby the intrinsic bias of one particle is equal and opposite to that of the other. The propogator for this system is solved exactly and expressions for the mean displacement and mean square displacement (MSD) are found. Depending on the nature of the intrinsic bias, the system's behaviour displays two regimes, characterised by (i) the particles moving towards each other and (ii) away from each other, both qualitatively different from the case of no bias. The continuous-space limit of the propogator is found and is shown to solve a Fokker-Planck equation for two biased, mutually exclusive Brownian particles with equal and opposite drift velocity.

Brownian walkers within subdiffusing territorial boundaries

Inspired by the collective phenomenon of territorial emergence, whereby animals move and interact through the scent marks they deposit, we study the dynamics of a 1D Brownian walker in a random environment consisting of confining boundaries that are themselves diffusing anomalously. We show how to reduce, in certain parameter regimes, the non-Markovian, many-body problem of territoriality to the analytically tractable one-body problem studied here. The mean square displacement (MSD) of the 1D Brownian walker within subdiffusing boundaries is calculated exactly and generalizes well known results when the boundaries are immobile. Furthermore, under certain conditions, if the boundary dynamics are strongly subdiffusive, we show the appearance of an interesting non-monotonicity in the time dependence of the MSD, giving rise to transient negative diffusion.
