A Mellin Transform Approach to Rephasing Invariants

In the low-energy effective theory of neutrinos, the Haar measure for unitary matrices is very likely to give rise to the observed PMNS matrix. Assuming the Haar measure, we determine the probability density functions for all quadratic, quartic Majorana, and quartic Dirac rephasing invariants for an arbitrary number of neutrino generations. We show that for a fixed number of neutrinos, all rephasing invariants of the same type have the same probability density function under the Haar measure. We then compute the moments of the rephasing invariants to determine, with the help of the Mellin transform, the three probability density functions. We finally investigate the physical implications of our results in function of the number of neutrinos.

Tunneling decay of false kinks

We consider the decay of "false kinks," that is, kinks formed in a scalar field theory with a pair of degenerate symmetry-breaking false vacua in 1+1 dimensions. The true vacuum is symmetric. A second scalar field and a peculiar potential are added in order for the kink to be classically stable. We find an expression for the decay rate of a false kink. As with any tunneling event, the rate is proportional to $\exp(-S_E)$ where $S_E$ is the Euclidean action of the bounce describing the tunneling event. This factor varies wildly depending on the parameters of the model. Of interest is the fact that for certain parameters $S_E$ can get arbitrarily small, implying that the kink is only barely stable. Thus, while the false vacuum itself may be very long-lived, the presence of kinks can give rise to rapid vacuum decay.

Near-BPS Skyrmions: Constant baryon density

Although it provides a relatively good picture of the nucleons, the Skyrme Model is unable to reproduce the small binding energy in nuclei. This suggests that Skyrme-like models that nearly saturate the Bogomol'nyi bound may be more appropriate since their mass is roughly proportional to the baryon number A. For that purpose, we propose a near-BPS Skyrme Model. It consists of terms up to order six in derivatives of the pion fields, including the nonlinear and Skyrme terms which are assumed to be relatively small. For our special choice of mass term, we obtain well-behaved analytical BPS-type solutions with constant baryon density configurations, as opposed to the more complex shell-like configurations found in most extensions of the Skyrme Model. Fitting the four model parameters, we find a remarkable agreement for the binding energy per nucleon B/A with respect to experimental data. These results support the idea that nuclei could be near-BPS Skyrmions.

Near-BPS Skyrmions: Non-shell configurations and Coulomb effects

The relatively small binding energy in nuclei suggests that they may be well represented by near-BPS Skyrmions since their mass is roughly proportional to the baryon number $A.$ For that purpose, we propose a generalization of the Skyrme model with terms up to order six in derivatives of the pion fields and treat the nonlinear $σ$ and Skyrme terms as small perturbations. For our special choice of mass term (or potential) $V$, we obtain well-behaved analytical BPS-type solutions with non-shell configurations for the baryon density, as opposed to the more complex shell-like configurations found in most extensions of the Skyrme model . Along with static and (iso)rotational energies, we add to the mass of the nuclei the often neglected Coulomb energy and isospin breaking term. Fitting the four model parameters, we find a remarkable agreement for the binding energy per nucleon $B/A$ with respect to experimental data. These results support the idea that nuclei could be near-BPS Skyrmions.

Nuclei as near BPS-Skyrmions

We study a generalization of the Skyrme model with the inclusion of a sixth-order term and a generalized mass term. We first analyze the model in a regime where the nonlinear sigma and Skyrme terms are switched to zero which leads to well-behaved analytical BPS-type solutions. Adding contributions from the rotational energy, we reproduce the mass of the most abundant isotopes to rather good accuracy. These BPS-type solutions are then used to compute the contributions from the nonlinear sigma and Skyrme terms when these are switched on. We then adjust the four parameters of the model using two different procedures and find that the additional terms only represent small perturbations to the system. We finally calculate the binding energy per nucleon and compare our results with the experimental values.
