Virtual Element methods for non-Newtonian shear-thickening fluid flow problems

In this work, we present a comprehensive theoretical analysis for Virtual Element discretizations of incompressible non-Newtonian flows governed by the Carreau-Yasuda constitutive law, in the shear-thickening regime (r > 2) including both degenerate (delta = 0) and non-degenerate (delta > 0) cases. The proposed Virtual Element method features two distinguishing advantages: the construction of an exactly divergence-free discrete velocity field and compatibility with general polygonal meshes. The analysis presented in this work extends a previous work, where only shear-thinning behavior (1 < r < 2) was considered. Indeed, the theoretical analysis of the shear-thickening setting requires several novel analytical tools, including: an inf-sup stability analysis of the discrete velocity-pressure coupling in non-Hilbertian norms, a stabilization term specifically designed to address the nonlinear structure as the exponent r > 2; and the introduction of a suitable discrete norm tailored to the underlying nonlinear constitutive relation. Numerical results demonstrate the practical performance of the proposed formulation.

Interpolation and stability estimates for edge and face virtual elements of general order

We develop interpolation error estimates for general order standard and serendipity edge and face virtual elements in two and three dimensions. Contextually, we investigate the stability properties of the associated L2 discrete bilinear forms. These results are fundamental tools in the analysis of general order virtual elements, e.g., for electromagnetic problems.

A virtual element method for the acoustic vibration problem

We analyze in this paper a virtual element approximation for the acoustic vibration problem. We consider a variational formulation relying only on the fluid displacement and propose a discretization by means of H(div) virtual elements with vanishing rotor. Under standard assumptions on the meshes, we show that the resulting scheme provides a correct approximation of the spectrum and prove optimal order error estimates. With this end, we prove approximation properties of the proposed virtual elements. We also report some numerical tests supporting our theoretical results.

Exponential convergence of the hp Virtual Element Method with corner singularities

In the present work, we analyze the $hp$ version of Virtual Element methods for the 2D Poisson problem. We prove exponential convergence of the energy error employing sequences of polygonal meshes geometrically refined, thus extending the classical choices for the decomposition in the $hp$ Finite Element framework to very general decomposition of the domain. A new stabilization for the discrete bilinear form with explicit bounds in $h$ and $p$ is introduced. Numerical experiments validate the theoretical results. We also exhibit a numerical comparison between $hp$ Virtual Elements and $hp$ Finite Elements.
