Pseudo-involutions in the Riordan group

We consider pseudo-involutions in the Riordan group where the generating function $g$ for the first column of a Riordan array satisfies a palindromic or near-palindromic functional equation. For those types of equations, we find, for very little work, the pseudo-involutory companion of $g$ and have a pseudo-involution in a $k$-Bell subgroup. There are only slight differences in the ordinary and exponential cases. In many cases, we also develop a general method for finding B-functions of Riordan pseudo-involutions in $k$-Bell subgroups, and show that these B-functions involve Chebyshev polynomials. We apply our method for many families of Riordan arrays, both new and already known. We also have some duality and reciprocity results. Since many of the examples we discuss have combinatorial significance, we conclude with a few remarks on the general framework for a combinatorial interpretation of some of the generating function results we obtain.

Mutation effects in ordered trees

A mutation will affect an individual and some or all of its descendants. In this paper, we investigate ordered trees with a distinguished vertex called the mutator. We describe various mutations in ordered trees, and find the generating functions for statistics concerning trees with those mutations. The examples give new interpretations to several known sequences and also introduce many new sequences and their combinatorial interpretations.

Lattice Polynomials, 12312-Avoiding Partial Matchings and Even Trees

The lattice polynomials $L_{i,j}(x)$ are introduced by Hough and Shapiro as a weighted count of certain lattice paths from the origin to the point $(i,j)$. In particular, $L_{2n, n}(x)$ reduces to the generating function of the numbers $T_{n,k}={1\over n}{n-1+k\choose n-1}{2n-k\choose n+1}$, which can be viewed as a refinement of the $3$-Catalan numbers $T_n=\frac{1}{2n+1}{3n\choose n}$. In this paper, we establish a correspondence between $12312$-avoiding partial matchings and lattice paths, and we show that the weighted count of such partial matchings with respect to the number of crossings in a more general sense coincides with the lattice polynomials $L_{i,j}(x)$. We also introduce a statistic on even trees, called the $r$-index, and show that the number of even trees with $2n$ edges and with $r$-index $k$ equal to $T_{n,k}$.
