A Unified Trace-Optimization Framework for Multidimensionality Reduction

This paper presents a comprehensive overview of several multidimensional reduction methods focusing on Multidimensional Principal Component Analysis (MPCA), Multilinear Orthogonal Neighborhood Preserving Projection (MONPP), Multidimensional Locally Linear Embedding (MLLE), and Multidimensional Laplacian Eigenmaps (MLE). These techniques are formulated within a unified framework based on trace optimization, where the dimensionality reduction problem is expressed as maximization or minimization problems. In addition to the linear MPCA and MONPP approaches, kernel-based extensions of these methods also are presented. The latter methods make it possible to capture nonlinear relations between high-dimensional data. A comparative analysis highlights the theoretical foundations, assumptions, and computational efficiency of each method, as well as their practical applicability. The study provides insights and guidelines for selecting an appropriate dimensionality reduction technique suited to the application at hand.

A tensor bidiagonalization method for higher-order singular value decomposition with applications

The need to know a few singular triplets associated with the largest singular values of third-order tensors arises in data compression and extraction. This paper describes a new method for their computation using the t-product. Methods for determining a couple of singular triplets associated with the smallest singular values also are presented. The proposed methods generalize available restarted Lanczos bidiagonalization methods for computing a few of the largest or smallest singular triplets of a matrix. The methods of this paper use Ritz and harmonic Ritz lateral slices to determine accurate approximations of the largest and smallest singular triplets, respectively. Computed examples show applications to data compression and face recognition.

Adaptive cross approximation for Tikhonov regularization in general form

Many problems in Science and Engineering give rise to linear integral equations of the first kind with a smooth kernel. Discretization of the integral operator yields a matrix, whose singular values cluster at the origin. We describe the approximation of such matrices by adaptive cross approximation, which avoids forming the entire matrix. The choice of the number of steps of adaptive cross approximation is discussed. The discretized right-hand side represents data that commonly are contaminated by measurement error. Solution of the linear system of equations so obtained is not meaningful because the matrix determined by adaptive cross approximation is rank-deficient. We remedy this difficulty by using Tikhonov regularization and discuss how a fairly general regularization matrix can be used. Computed examples illustrate that the use of a regularization matrix different from the identity can improve the quality of the computed approximate solutions significantly.

On the banded Toeplitz structured distance to symmetric positive semidefiniteness

This paper is concerned with the determination of a close real banded positive definite Toeplitz matrix in the Frobenius norm to a given square real banded matrix. While it is straightforward to determine the closest banded Toeplitz matrix to a given square matrix, the additional requirement of positive definiteness makes the problem difficult. We review available theoretical results and provide a simple approach to determine a banded positive definite Toeplitz matrix.

Perron communicability and sensitivity of multilayer networks

Modeling complex systems that consist of different types of objects leads to multilayer networks, where nodes in the different layers represent different kind of objects. Nodes are connected by edges, which have positive weights. A multilayer network is associated with a supra-adjacency matrix. This paper investigates the sensitivity of the communicability in a multilayer network to perturbations of the network by studying the sensitivity of the Perron root of the supra-adjacency matrix. Our analysis sheds light on which edge weights to make larger to increase the communicability of the network, and which edge weights can be made smaller or set to zero without affecting the communicability significantly.

Continuous Adaptive Cross Approximation for Ill-posed Problems with Chebfun

The analysis of linear ill-posed problems often is carried out in function spaces using tools from functional analysis. However, the numerical solution of these problems typically is computed by first discretizing the problem and then applying tools from (finite-dimensional) linear algebra. The present paper explores the feasibility of applying the Chebfun package to solve ill-posed problems. This approach allows a user to work with functions instead of matrices. The solution process therefore is much closer to the analysis of ill-posed problems than standard linear algebra-based solution methods.

Functions and eigenvectors of partially known matrices with applications to network analysis

Matrix functions play an important role in applied mathematics. In network analysis, in particular, the exponential of the adjacency matrix associated with a network provides valuable information about connectivity, as well as about the relative importance or centrality of nodes. Another popular approach to rank the nodes of a network is to compute the left Perron vector of the adjacency matrix for the network. The present article addresses the problem of evaluating matrix functions, as well as computing an approximation to the left Perron vector, when only some of the columns and/or some of the rows of the adjacency matrix are known. Applications to network analysis are considered, when only some sampled columns and/or rows of the adjacency matrix that defines the network are available. A sampling scheme that takes the connectivity of the network into account is described. Computed examples illustrate the performance of the methods discussed.

Approximated structured pseudospectra

Pseudospectra and structured pseudospectra are important tools for the analysis of matrices. Their computation, however, can be very demanding for all but small matrices. A new approach to compute approximations of pseudospectra and structured pseudospectra, based on determining the spectra of many suitably chosen rank-one or projected rank-one perturbations of the given matrix is proposed. The choice of rank-one or projected rank-one perturbations is inspired by Wilkinson's analysis of eigenvalue sensitivity. Numerical examples illustrate that the proposed approach gives much better insight into the pseudospectra and structured pseudospectra than random or structured random rank-one perturbations with lower computational burden. The latter approach is presently commonly used for the determination of structured pseudospectra.

Regularization matrices determined by matrix nearness problems

This paper is concerned with the solution of large-scale linear discrete ill-posed problems with error-contaminated data. Tikhonov regularization is a popular approach to determine meaningful approximate solutions of such problems. The choice of regularization matrix in Tikhonov regularization may significantly affect the quality of the computed approximate solution. This matrix should be chosen to promote the recovery of known important features of the desired solution, such as smoothness and monotonicity. We describe a novel approach to determine regularization matrices with desired properties by solving a matrix nearness problem. The constructed regularization matrix is the closest matrix in the Frobenius norm with a prescribed null space to a given matrix. Numerical examples illustrate the performance of the regularization matrices so obtained.

Some matrix nearness problems suggested by Tikhonov regularization

The numerical solution of linear discrete ill-posed problems typically requires regularization, i.e., replacement of the available ill-conditioned problem by a nearby better conditioned one. The most popular regularization methods for problems of small to moderate size are Tikhonov regularization and truncated singular value decomposition (TSVD). By considering matrix nearness problems related to Tikhonov regularization, several novel regularization methods are derived. These methods share properties with both Tikhonov regularization and TSVD, and can give approximate solutions of higher quality than either one of these methods.
