Black hole thermodynamics is extensive with variable Newton constant

Inspired by the recent studies on the thermodynamics of AdS black holes in the restricted phase space formalism, we propose a similar formalism for the thermodynamics of non-AdS black holes with variable Newton constant. It is shown that, by introducing the new variables $N,μ$, where $N$ is proportional to the inverse Newton constant and $μ$ its conjugate variable, referred to as the chemical potential, the black hole thermodynamics can be formulated in a form which is consistent with the standard extensive thermodynamics for open macroscopic systems, with the first law and the Euler relation hold simultaneously. This formalism has profound implications, in particular, the mass is a homogeneous function of the first order in the extensive variables and the intensive variables are zeroth order homogeneous functions. The chemical potential is shown to be closely related to the Euclidean action evaluated at the black hole configuration.

Restricted phase space thermodynamics for AdS black holes via holography

A new formalism for thermodynamics of AdS black holes called the {\em restricted phase space thermodynamics} (RPST) is proposed. The construction is based on top of Visser's holographic thermodynamics, but with the AdS radius fixed as a constant. Thus the RPST is free of the $(P,V)$ variables but inherits the central charge and chemical potential as a new pair of conjugate thermodynamic variables. In this formalism, the Euler relation and the Gibbs-Duhem equation hold simultaneously with the first law of black hole thermodynamics, which guarantee the appropriate homogeneous behaviors for the black hole mass and the intensive variables. The formalism is checked in detail in the example case of 4-dimensional RN-AdS black hole in Einstein-Maxwell theory, in which some interesting thermodynamic behaviors are revealed.

Thermodynamics for higher dimensional rotating black holes with variable Newton constant

The extensivity for the thermodynamics of general $D$-dimensional rotating black holes with or without a cosmological constant can be proved analytically, provided the effective number of microscopic degrees of freedom and the chemical potential are given respectively as $N=L^{D-2}/G, μ= GTI_D/L^{D-2}$, where $G$ is the variable Newton constant, $I_D$ is the Euclidean action and $L$ is a constant length scale. In the cases without a cosmological constant, i.e. the Myers-Perry black holes, the physical mass and the intensive variables can be expressed as explicit macro state functions in the extensive variables in a simple and compact form, which allows for an analytical calculation for the heat capacity. The results indicate that the Myers-Perry black holes with zero, one and $k$ equal rotation parameters are all thermodynamically unstable.

Thermodynamics of Kerr-AdS black holes in the restricted phase space

The thermodynamics for Kerr-AdS black hole in four dimensions is revisited using the recently proposed restricted phase space formalism, which includes the central charge $C$ of the dual CFT and the chemical potential $μ$, but excludes the pressure and the conjugate volume, as thermodynamic variables. The Euler relation holds automatically, and the first order homogeneity of the mass and the zeroth order homogeneity of the intensive variables are made explicit. Thermodynamic processes involving each pair of conjugate variables are studied in some detail, with emphasis on the scaling properties of the equations of states. It turns out that the thermodynamic behavior of the Kerr-AdS black hole is very similar to that of the RN-AdS black hole studied earlier. In particular, it is found that, there is a first order supercritical phase equilibrium in the $T-S$ processes at fixed nonvanishing angular momentum, while at vanishing angular momentum or at fixed angular velocities, there is always a non-equilibrium transition from a small unstable black hole state to a large stable black hole state. Moreover, there is a Hawking-Page phase transition in the $μ-C$ processes. Due to the complicatedness of the Kerr metric, the exact critical point and the Hawking-Page temperature are worked out explicitly only in the slow rotating limit, however the characteristic thermodynamic properties do not rely on the slow rotating approximation.

Thermodynamics and holographic entanglement entropy for spherical black holes in 5D Gauss-Bonnet gravity

The holographic entanglement entropy is studied numerically in (4+1)-dimensional spherically symmetric Gauss-Bonnet AdS black hole spacetime with compact boundary. On the bulk side the black hole spacetime undergoes a van der Waals-like phase transition in the extended phase space, which is reviewed with emphasis on the behavior on the temperature-entropy plane. On the boundary, we calculated the regularized HEE of a disk region of different sizes. We find strong numerical evidence for the failure of equal area law for isobaric curves on the temperature-HEE plane and for the correctness of first law of entanglement entropy, and briefly give an explanation for why the latter may serve as a reason for the former, i.e. the failure of equal area law on the temperature-HEE plane.

Compressible forced viscous fluid from product Einstein manifolds

We consider the fluctuation modes around a hypersurface $Σ_c$ in a $(d+2)$-dimensional product Einstein manifold, with $Σ_c$ taken either near the horizon or at some finite cutoff from the horizon. By mapping the equations that governs the lowest nontrivial order of the fluctuation modes into a system of partial differential equations on a flat Newtonian spacetime, a system of compressible, forced viscous fluid is realized. This result generalizes the non bulk/boundary holographic duality constructed by us recently to the case of a different background geometry.

Flat space compressible fluid as holographic dual of black hole with curved horizon

We consider the fluid dual of $(d+2)$-dimensional vacuum Einstein equation either with or without a cosmological constant. The background solutions admit black hole event horizons and the spatial sections of the horizons are conformally flat. Therefore, a $d$-dimensional flat Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^d$ is contained in the conformal class of the spatial section of the black hole horizon. A compressible, forced, stationary and viscous fluid system can be constructed on the product (Newtonian) spacetime $\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{E}^d$ as the lowest order fluctuation modes around such black hole background. This construction provides the first example of holographic duality which is beyond the class of bulk/boundary correspondence.

Critical phenomena of static charged AdS black holes in conformal gravity

The extended thermodynamics of static charged AdS black holes in conformal gravity is analyzed. The $P-V$ criticality of these black holes has some unusual features. There exists a single critical point with critical temperature $T_c$ and critical pressure $P_c$. At fixed $T>T_c$ (or at fixed $P>P_c$), there are two zeroth order phase transition points but no first order phase transition points. The systems favors large pressure states at constant $T$, or high temperature states at constant $P$.

Extended phase space thermodynamics for third order Lovelock black holes in diverse dimensions

Treating the cosmological constant as thermodynamic pressure and its conjugate as thermodynamic volume, we investigate the critical behavior of the third order Lovelock black holes in diverse dimensions. For black hole horizons with different normalized sectional curvature $k=0,\pm1$, the corresponding critical behaviors differ drastically. For $k=0$, there is no critical point in the extended thermodynamic phase space. For $k=-1$, there is a single critical point in any dimension $d\geq 7$, and for $k=+1$, there is a single critical point in $7$ dimension and two critical points in $8,9,10,11$ dimensions. We studied the corresponding phase structures in all possible cases.

Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant as a free thermodynamical variable and the associated criticality

The thermodynamic phase space of Gauss-Bonnet (GB) AdS black holes is extended, taking the inverse of the GB coupling constant as a new thermodynamic pressure $P_{\mathrm{GB}}$. We studied the critical behavior associated with $P_{\mathrm{GB}}$ in the extended thermodynamic phase space at fixed cosmological constant and electric charge. The result shows that when the black holes are neutral, the associated critical points can only exist in five dimensional GB-AdS black holes with spherical topology, and the corresponding critical exponents are identical to those for Van der Waals system. For charged GB-AdS black holes, it is shown that there can be only one critical point in five dimensions (for black holes with either spherical or hyperbolic topologies), which also requires the electric charge to be bounded within some appropriate range; while in $d>5$ dimensions, there can be up to two different critical points at the same electric charge, and the phase transition can occur only at temperatures which are not in between the two critical values.

Holographic fluid from nonminimally coupled scalar-tensor theory of gravity

We establish the gravity/fluid correspondence in the nonminimally coupled scalar-tensor theory of gravity. Imposing Petrov-like boundary conditions over the gravitational field, we find that, for a certain class of background metrics, the boundary fluctuations obey the standard Navier-Stokes equation for an incompressible fluid without any external force term in the leading order approximation under the near horizon expansion. That is to say, the scalar field fluctuations does not contribute in the leading order approximation regardless of what kind of boundary condition we impose on it.

Near horizon symmetry and entropy of black holes in the presence of a conformally coupled scalar

We analyze the near horizon conformal symmetry for black hole solutions in gravity with a conformally coupled scalar field using the method proposed by Majhi and Padmanabhan recently. It is shown that the entropy of the black holes of the form $\mathrm{d}s^2 = - f(r)\mathrm{d}t^2 + \mathrm{d}r^2/f(r)+...$ agrees with Wald entropy. This result is different from previous result obtained by M. Natsuume, T. Okamura and M. Sato using the canonical Hamiltonian formalism, which claims a discrepancy from Wald entropy.

Three dimensional rotating hairy black holes, asymptotics and thermodynamics

A rotating hairy black hole solution is found in gravity minimally coupled to a self-interacting real scalar field in three spacetime dimensions. Then we discuss analytically the horizon structure and find an analogue of the famous Kerr bound in (2+1) dimensions because of the existence of black hole horizons. We present the asymptotic symmetries and find the same symmetry group (i.e. the conformal group) and central charge as in pure gravity. Based on the asymptotic behavior, the mass and angular momentum are presented by the Regge-Teitelboim approach. Other thermodynamic quantities are also obtained and the first law of black hole thermodynamics and Smarr relation are checked. In addition, we also investigate the local thermodynamic stability and find the existence of Hawking-Page phase transition in the rotating hairy black hole.

Charged black hole with a scalar hair in (2+1) dimensions

We obtain and analyze an exact solution to Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory in $(2+1)$ dimensions, in which the scalar field couples to gravity in a non-minimal way, and it also couples to itself with the self-interacting potential solely determined by the metric ansatz. A negative cosmological constant naturally emerges as a constant term in the scalar potential. The metric is static and circularly symmetric, and contains a curvature singularity at the origin. The conditions for the metric to contain 0, 1, 2 horizons are identified, and the effects of the scalar and electric charges on the size of the black hole radius are discussed. Under proper choices of parameters, the metric degenerates into some previously known solutions in $(2+1)$-dimensional gravity.

Gravity-mediated holography in fluid dynamics

For any spherically symmetric black hole spacetime with an ideal fluid source, we establish a dual fluid system on a hypersurface near the black hole horizon. The dual fluid is incompressible and obeys Navier-Stokes equation subject to some external force. The force term in the fluid equation consists in two parts, one comes from the curvature of the hypersurface, the other comes from the stress-energy of the bulk fluid.

Novel rotating hairy black hole in (2+1)-dimensions

We present some novel rotating hairy black hole metric in $(2+1)$ dimensions, which is an exact solution to the field equations of the Einstein-scalar-AdS theory with a non-minimal coupling. The scalar potential is determined by the metric ansatz and consistency of the field equations and cannot be prescribed arbitrarily. In the simplified, critical case, the scalar potential contains two independent constant parameters, which are respectively related to the mass and angular momentum of the black hole in a particular way. As long as the angular momentum does not vanish, the metric can have zero, one or two horizons. The case with no horizon is physically uninteresting because of the curvature singularity lying at the origin. We identified the necessary conditions for at least one horizon to be present in the solution, which imposes some bound on the mass-angular momentum ratio. For some particular choice of parameters our solution degenerates into some previously known black hole solutions.

Strange Lagrangian systems and statistical mechanics

We consider the canonical ensemble of $N$ particles admitting a strange Hamiltonian description. Each of the particles obeys a set of Newtonian equation of motion, which can also be described by the standard canonical Hamiltonian mechanics. However, the thermodynamics corresponding to the strange description and canonical description differ drastically from each other. In other words, the strange description and the standard canonical description are inequivalent on the level of thermodynamics.

Accelerating BTZ spacetime

An exact solution of $(2+1)$-dimensional Einstein gravity with cosmological constant is studied. The corresponding spacetime is interpreted as an accelerating BTZ spacetime. The proper acceleration, horizon structure, temperature and entropy are presented in detail. The metric being studied is very similar to the one studied by Astorino in arXiv:1101.2616, but the range of parameters is different which results in significant changes in the causal structures.

Hamiltonian description of singular Lagrangian systems with spontaneously broken time translation symmetry

Shapere and Wilczek recently found some singular Lagrangian systems which spontaneously breaks time translation symmetry. The common feature of their models is that the energy functions are multivalued in terms of the canonical phase space variables and the symmetry breaking ground states are all located at the brunching point singularities. By enlarging the phase space and making use of Dirac's theory on constrained Hamiltonian systems, we present the Hamiltonian description of some of the models discussed by Shapere and Wilczek and found that both the multivaluedness and the brunching point singularities can be avoided, while the spontaneous breaking oftime translation becomes more transparent. It is also shown that the breaking of time translation is always accompanied by the breaking of time reversal.

Landau meets Newton: time translation symmetry breaking in classical mechanics

Every classical Newtonian mechanical system can be equipped with a nonstandard Hamiltonian structure, in which the Hamiltonian is the square of the canonical Hamiltonian up to a constant shift, and the Poisson bracket is nonlinear. In such a formalism, time translation symmetry can be spontaneously broken, provided the potential function becomes negative. A nice analogy between time translation symmetry breaking and the Landau theory of second order phase transitions is established, together with several example cases illustrating time translation breaking ground states. In particular, the $Λ$CDM model of FRW cosmology is reformulated as the time translation symmetry breaking ground states.

Novel accelerating Einstein vacua and smooth inhomogeneous Riemannian manifolds

A novel class of Einstein vacua is presented, which possess non-vanishing cosmological constant and accelerating horizon with the topology of $S^{D-3}$ fibration over $S^{1}$. After Euclideanization, the solution describes a conformally distorted $S^{D-1}$ fibration over $S^1$, which is smooth, compact and inhomogeneous, and can be regarded as analogue of Don Page's gravitational instanton.

Accelerating vacua in Gauss-Bonnet gravity

Accelerating vacua with maximally symmetric, but not necessarily spherical, sections for Einstein and Gauss-Bonnet gravities in generic dimensions are obtained. The acceleration parameter has the effect of shifting the cosmological constants in Einstein gravity, whereas in Gauss-Bonnet gravity the effective cosmological constants remain the same in the presence of acceleration as in the case without acceleration.

preprint2011arXiv

Gauss-Bonnet as effective cosmological constant

It is known that Gauss-Bonnet terms in higher dimensional gravity can produce an effective cosmological constant. We add extra examples to this picture by presenting explicitly two branches of accelerating vacuum solutions to the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravities with a bare cosmological constant in 5 and 6 dimensions. Both branches of solutions are of constant curvature and the effective cosmological constants are independent of the acceleration parameter. One branch (the "-" branch) of the solutions is well defined in the limit when the Gauss-Bonnet parameter approaches zero, in which case the effective cosmological constant becomes identical with the bare value, while the other (i.e. the "+") branch is singular in the same limit, and beyond this singular limit, the effective cosmological constant is inversely proportional to the Gauss-Bonnet parameter with a negative constant of proportionality when the bare value vanishes.

Five-dimensional vacuum Einstein spacetimes in C-metric like coordinates

A 5-dimensional Einstein spacetime with (non)vanishing cosmological constant is analyzed in detail. The metric is in close analogy with the 4-dimensional massless uncharged C-metric in many aspects. The coordinate system, horizons and causal structures, relations to standard de Sitter, anti de Sitter and Minkowski vacua are investigated. After a boost and Kaluza-Klein reduction, we get an exact solution of 4-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Liouville theory which reduces to a solution to Einstein-Liouville theory in the limit of zero boost velocity and to that of Einstein-Maxwell-diliton theory in the case of zero cosmological constant.

Hidden symmetries for thermodynamics and emergence of relativity

Erik Verlinde recently proposed an idea about the thermodynamic origin of gravity. Though this is a beautiful idea which may resolve many long standing problems in the theories of gravity, it also raises many other problems. In this article I will comment on some of the problems of Verlinde's proposal with special emphasis on the thermodynamical origin of the principle of relativity. It is found that there is a large group of hidden symmetries of thermodynamics which contains the Poincare group of the spacetime for which space is emergent. This explains the thermodynamic origin of the principle of relativity.
