Core localized alpha-channeling via low frequency Alfven mode generation in reversed shear scenarios

A novel channel for fuel ions heating in tokamak core plasma is proposed and analyzed using nonlinear gyrokinetic theory. The channel is achieved via spontaneous decay of reversed shear Alfven eigenmode (RSAE) into low frequency Alfven modes (LFAM), which then heat fuel ions via collisionless ion Landau damping. The conditions for RSAE spontaneous decay are investigated, and the saturation level and the consequent fuel ion heating rate are also derived. The channel is expected to be crucial for future reactors operating under reversed shear configurations, where fusion alpha particles are generated in the tokamak core where the magnetic shear is typically reversed, and there is a dense RSAE spectrum due to the small alpha particle characteristic dimensionless orbits.

Gyrokinetic Theory of Low-frequency Electromagnetic Waves in Finite-$β$ Anisotropic Plasmas

We present a gyrokinetic theory for the electromagnetic waves and instabilities with frequencies much lower than the ion cyclotron frequency in finite-$β$ anisotropic uniform plasmas. Here, $β$ is the ratio between plasma and magnetic pressures. Kinetic effects due to both the finite Larmor radii and wave-particle resonances are fully kept in the analysis. Corresponding linear dispersion relation and wave polarizations, valid for general $β$ value and perpendicular wavelength, are then specifically derived for a bi-Maxwellian plasma. Analytic expressions for the criteria of kinetic firehose and mirror instabilities are also given. The mode frequency, stability, and wave polarization of a broad spectrum of normal modes are then investigated numerically in a systematic study over a set of parameters. Our study clearly demonstrates that, due to the finite ion Larmor radius effect, the ion-sound wave, mirror mode, and shear Alfven wave are intrinsically coupled.

Linear kinetic effects of core plasma on low frequency Alfven and acoustic eigenmodes in tokamaks

The resonant and non-resonant effects of core plasma on the excitation of low frequency modes with $ω< ω_{BAE}$, such as Beta-induced Alfvén Acoustic Eigenmodes (BAAEs) and Kinetic Ballooning Modes (KBMs) are examined in the framework of the generalized fishbone-like dispersion relation. The formalism of the fishbone-like equation contains all the necessary ingredients to describe the features of these low frequency fluctuations, and explain experimental findings. Core plasma properties (diamagnetic frequency and precession resonance with trapped ions) strongly affect the excitation of the modes, and in the case of BAAEs more effectively than the energetic particles. The diamagnetic frequency of the core plasma also contributes to the coupling of the BAAEs with the KBMs, thus affecting the excitation and polarization of both modes. Energetic particles can still provide a non-resonant drive to some of the low frequency modes.

Measuring interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in ultra-thin magnetic films

The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), being one of the origins of chiral magnetism, is currently attracting considerable attention in the research community focusing on applied magnetism and spintronics. For future applications, an accurate measurement of its strength is indispensable. Here we present a review of the state-of-the-art of measuring the coefficient of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, the DMI constant $D$, focusing on systems where the interaction arises from the interface between two materials (i.e. interfacial DMI). We give an overview of the experimental techniques as well as their theoretical background and models for the quantification of the DMI constant. The measurement techniques are divided into three categories: a) domain wall-based measurements, b) spin wave-based measurements and c) spin-orbit torque-based measurements. We analyze the advantages and disadvantages of each method and compare $D$ values at different interfaces. The review aims to obtain a better understanding of the applicability of the different techniques to various stacks and of the origin of apparent disagreements among literature values.

On scattering and damping of Toroidal Alfven eigenmode by drift wave turbulence

We demonstrate analytically that, in toroidal plasmas, scattering by drift wave turbulence could lead to appreciable damping of toroidal Alfven eigenmodes via generation of short-wavelength electron Landau damped kinetic Alfven waves. A corresponding analytic expression of the damping rate is derived, and found to be, typically, comparable to the linear drive by energetic particles. The implications of this novel mechanism on the transport and heating processes in burning plasmas are also discussed.

How Zonal Flow Affects Trapped Electron Driven Turbulence in Tokamaks

The role of self-generated zonal flows in the collisionless trapped-electron mode (CTEM) turbulence is a long-standing open issue in tokamak plasmas. Here we show, for the first time, that the zonal flow excitation in the CTEM turbulence is formally isomorphic to that in the ion temperature gradient turbulence. Trapped electrons contribute implicitly only via linear dynamics. Theoretical analyses further suggest that, for short wavelength CTEMs, the zonal flow excitation is weak and, more importantly, not an effective saturation mechanism. Corresponding controlling parameters are also identified theoretically. These findings not only offer a plausible explanation for previous seemingly contradictory simulation results, but can also facilitate controlling the CTEM instability and transport with experimentally accessible parameters.

Effects of energetic particles on zonal flow generation by toroidal Alfven eigenmode

Generation of zonal ow (ZF) by energetic particle (EP) driven toroidal Alfven eigenmode (TAE) is investigated using nonlinear gyrokinetic theory. It is found that, nonlinear resonant EP contri- bution dominates over the usual Reynolds and Maxwell stresses due to thermal plasma nonlinear response. ZF can be forced driven in the linear growth stage of TAE, with the growth rate being twice the TAE growth rate. The ZF generation mechanism is shown to be related to polarization induced by resonant EP nonlinearity. The generated ZF has both the usual meso-scale and micro- scale radial structures. Possible consequences of this forced driven ZF on the nonlinear dynamics of TAE are also discussed.

Fine Structure Zonal Flow Excitation by Beta-induced Alfven Eigenmode

Nonlinear excitation of low frequency zonal structure (LFZS) by beta-induced Alfven eigenmode (BAE) is investigated using nonlinear gyrokinetic theory. It is found that electrostatic zonal flow (ZF), rather than zonal current, is preferentially excited by finite amplitude BAE. In addition to the well-known meso-scale radial envelope structure, ZF is also found to exhibit fine radial structure due to the localization of BAE with respect to mode rational surfaces. Specifically, the zonal electric field has an even mode structure at the rational surface where radial envelope peaks.

On fast radial propagation of parametrically excited geodesic acoustic mode

The spatial and temporal evolution of parametrically excited geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) initial pulse is investigated both analytically and numerically. Our results show that the nonlinearly excited GAM propagates at a group velocity which is, typically, much larger than that due to finite ion Larmor radius as predicted by the linear theory. The nonlinear dispersion relation of GAM driven by a finite amplitude drift wave pump is also derived, showing a nonlinear frequency increment of GAM. Further implications of these findings for interpreting experimental observations are also discussed.

Nonlinear dynamics of phase space zonal structures and energetic particle physics in fusion plasmas

A general theoretical framework for investigating nonlinear dynamics of phase space zonal structures is presented in this work. It is then, more specifically, applied to the limit where the nonlinear evolution time scale is smaller or comparable to the wave-particle trapping period. In this limit, both theoretical and numerical simulation studies show that non-adiabatic frequency chirping and phase locking could lead to secular resonant particle transport on meso- or macro-scales. The interplay between mode structures and resonant particles then provides the crucial ingredient to properly understand and analyze the nonlinear dynamics of Alfvén wave instabilities excited by non-perturbative energetic particles in burning fusion plasmas. Analogies with autoresonance in nonlinear dynamics and with superradiance in free electron lasers are also briefly discussed.

2D continuous spectrum of shear Alfven waves in the presence of a magnetic island

The radial structure of the continuous spectrum of shear Alfven modes is calculated in the presence of a magnetic island in tokamak plasmas. Modes with the same helicity of the magnetic island are considered in a slab model approximation. In this framework, with an appropriate rotation of the coordinates the problem reduces to 2 dimensions. Geometrical effects due to the shape of the flux surface's cross section are retained to all orders. On the other hand, we keep only curvature effects responsible of the beta induced gap in the low-frequency part of the continuous spectrum. New continuum accumulation points are found at the O-point of the magnetic island. The beta-induced Alfven Eigenmodes (BAE) continuum accumulation point is found to be positioned at the separatrix flux surface. The most remarkable result is the nonlinear modification of the BAE continuum accumulation point frequency.

Shear Alfven wave continuous spectrum within magnetic islands

The radial structure of the continuous spectrum of shear Alfven waves is calculated in this paper within the separatrix of a magnetic island. Geometrical effects due to the noncircularity of the flux surface's cross section are retained to all orders. On the other hand, we keep only curvature effects responsible for the beta-induced gap in the low-frequency part of the continuous spectrum. Modes with different helicity from that of the magnetic island are considered. The main result is that, inside a magnetic island, there is a continuous spectrum very similar to that of tokamak plasmas, where a generalized safety factor q can be defined and where a wide frequency gap is formed, analogous to the ellipticity induced Alfven eigenmode gap in tokamaks. The presence of this gap is due to the strong eccentricity of the island cross section. The importance of the existence of such a gap is recognized in potentially hosting magnetic-island induced Alfven eigenmodes (MiAE). Due to the frequency dependence of the shear Alfven wave continuum on the magnetic-island size, the possibility of utilizing MiAE frequency scalings as a novel magnetic-island diagnostic is also discussed.
