BBA-net: A bi-branch attention network for crowd counting

In the field of crowd counting, the current mainstream CNN-based regression methods simply extract the density information of pedestrians without finding the position of each person. This makes the output of the network often found to contain incorrect responses, which may erroneously estimate the total number and not conducive to the interpretation of the algorithm. To this end, we propose a Bi-Branch Attention Network (BBA-NET) for crowd counting, which has three innovation points. i) A two-branch architecture is used to estimate the density information and location information separately. ii) Attention mechanism is used to facilitate feature extraction, which can reduce false responses. iii) A new density map generation method combining geometric adaptation and Voronoi split is introduced. Our method can integrate the pedestrian's head and body information to enhance the feature expression ability of the density map. Extensive experiments performed on two public datasets show that our method achieves a lower crowd counting error compared to other state-of-the-art methods.

Enhancing and Dissecting Crowd Counting By Synthetic Data

In this article, we propose a simulated crowd counting dataset CrowdX, which has a large scale, accurate labeling, parameterized realization, and high fidelity. The experimental results of using this dataset as data enhancement show that the performance of the proposed streamlined and efficient benchmark network ESA-Net can be improved by 8.4\%. The other two classic heterogeneous architectures MCNN and CSRNet pre-trained on CrowdX also show significant performance improvements. Considering many influencing factors determine performance, such as background, camera angle, human density, and resolution. Although these factors are important, there is still a lack of research on how they affect crowd counting. Thanks to the CrowdX dataset with rich annotation information, we conduct a large number of data-driven comparative experiments to analyze these factors. Our research provides a reference for a deeper understanding of the crowd counting problem and puts forward some useful suggestions in the actual deployment of the algorithm.

Penalized Maximum Likelihood Estimator for Skew Normal Mixtures

Skew normal mixture models provide a more flexible framework than the popular normal mixtures for modelling heterogeneous data with asymmetric behaviors. Due to the unboundedness of likelihood function and the divergency of shape parameters, the maximum likelihood estimators of the parameters of interest are often not well defined, leading to dissatisfactory inferential process. We put forward a proposal to deal with these issues simultaneously in the context of penalizing the likelihood function. The resulting penalized maximum likelihood estimator is proved to be strongly consistent when the putative order of mixture is equal to or larger than the true one. We also provide penalized EM-type algorithms to compute penalized estimators. Finite sample performances are examined by simulations and real data applications and the comparison to the existing methods.

Correlations of neutron multiplicity and gamma multiplicity with fragment mass and total kinetic energy in spontaneous fission of 252Cf

The dependence of correlations of neutron multiplicity ν and gamma-ray multiplicity Mg in spontaneous fission of 252Cf on fragment mass A* and total kinetic energy TKE has been investigated employing the ratio of Mg/ν and the form of Mg(ν). We show for the first time that Mg and ν have a complex correlation for heavy fragment masses, while there is a positive dependence of Mg(ν) for light fragment masses and for near-symmetric mass splits. The ratio Mg/ν exhibits strong shell effects for the neutron magic number N = 50 and near the doubly magic number shell closure at Z = 50 and N = 82. The gamma-ray multiplicity Mg has a maximum for TKE = 165-170 MeV. Above 170 MeV Mg(TKE) is approximately linear, while it deviates significantly from a linear dependence at lower TKE. The correlation between the average neutron and gamma-ray multiplicities can be partly reproduced by model calculations.

Nuclear charge distribution in the spontaneous fission of 252Cf

The measurement for charge distributions of fragments in 252Cf has been performed by using a unique style of detector setup consisting of a typical grid ionization chamber and a dE-E particle telescope. We found that the fragment mass dependency of the average width of the charge distribution shows a systematic decreased trend with the obvious odd-even effect. The variation of widths of charge distribution with kinetic energies shows an approximate V-shape curve due to the large number of neutron emission for the high excitation energies and cold fragmentation with low excitation energies. As for the behavior of the average nuclear charge with respect to its deviation ΔZ from the unchanged charge distribution (UCD) as a function of the mass number of primary fragments A*, for asymmetric fission products ΔZ is negative value, while upon approaching mass symmetry ΔZ turns positive. Concerning the energy dependence of the most probable charge for given primary mass number A*, the obvious increasing tendencies for with the kinetic energies are observed. The correlation between the average nuclear charge and the primary mass number is given as linear function. The proton and neutron odd-even effects with light fragment kinetic energies are derived.

Feature Screening via Distance Correlation Learning

This paper is concerned with screening features in ultrahigh dimensional data analysis, which has become increasingly important in diverse scientific fields. We develop a sure independence screening procedure based on the distance correlation (DC-SIS, for short). The DC-SIS can be implemented as easily as the sure independence screening procedure based on the Pearson correlation (SIS, for short) proposed by Fan and Lv (2008). However, the DC-SIS can significantly improve the SIS. Fan and Lv (2008) established the sure screening property for the SIS based on linear models, but the sure screening property is valid for the DC-SIS under more general settings including linear models. Furthermore, the implementation of the DC-SIS does not require model specification (e.g., linear model or generalized linear model) for responses or predictors. This is a very appealing property in ultrahigh dimensional data analysis. Moreover, the DC-SIS can be used directly to screen grouped predictor variables and for multivariate response variables. We establish the sure screening property for the DC-SIS, and conduct simulations to examine its finite sample performance. Numerical comparison indicates that the DC-SIS performs much better than the SIS in various models. We also illustrate the DC-SIS through a real data example.
