$t\bar{t}t\bar{t}$ signatures through the lens of color-octet scalars

We reinterpret two recent LHC searches for events containing four top quarks ($t\bar{t}t\bar{t}$) in the context of supersymmetric models with Dirac gauginos and color-octet scalars (sgluons). We explore whether sgluon contributions to the four-top production cross section $σ(pp \to t\bar{t}t\bar{t})$ can accommodate an excess of four-top events recently reported by the ATLAS collaboration. We also study constraints on these models from an ATLAS search for new phenomena with jets and missing transverse energy ($E_{\text{T}}^{\text{miss}}$) sensitive to signals with four top quarks. We find that these two analyses provide complementary constraints, with the jets + $E_{\text{T}}^{\text{miss}}$ search exceeding the four-top cross section measurement in sensitivity for sgluons heavier than about 800 GeV. We ultimately find that either a scalar or a pseudoscalar sgluon can currently fit the ATLAS excess in a range of reasonable benchmark scenarios, though a pseudoscalar in minimal Dirac gaugino models is ruled out. We finally offer sensitivity projections for these analyses at the HL-LHC, mapping the $5σ$ discovery potential in sgluon parameter space and computing exclusion limits at 95% CL in scenarios where no excess is found.

Changing patterns in electroweak precision with new color-charged states: Oblique corrections and the $W$ boson mass

The recent measurement by the CDF Collaboration of the $W$ boson mass is in significant tension with the Standard Model expectation, showing a discrepancy of seven standard deviations. A larger value of $m_W$ affects the global electroweak fit, particularly the best-fit values of the Peskin-Takeuchi parameters $S$, $T$ (and perhaps $U$) that measure oblique corrections from new physics. To meet this challenge, we propose some simple models capable of generating non-negative $S$ and $T$, the latter of which faces the greatest upward pressure from the CDF measurement in scenarios with $U=0$. Our models feature weak multiplets of scalars charged under $\mathrm{SU}(3)_{\text{c}} \times \mathrm{U}(1)_Y$, which cannot attain nonzero vacuum expectation values but nevertheless produce e.g. $T \neq 0$ given some other mechanism to split the electrically charged and neutral scalars. We compute the oblique corrections in these models and identify ample parameter space supporting the CDF value of $m_W$.

DarkFlux: A new tool to analyze indirect-detection spectra of next-generation dark matter models

We present DarkFlux, a software tool designed to analyze indirect-detection signatures for next-generation models of dark matter (DM) with multiple annihilation channels. Version 1.0 of this tool accepts user-generated models with $2\to 2$ tree-level dark matter annihilation to pairs of Standard Model (SM) particles and analyzes DM annihilation to $γ$ rays. The tool consists of three modules -- the annihilation fraction module, the flux module, and the analysis module -- which can be run in a loop in order to scan over DM mass if desired. [A description of each module is available in the full abstract.] DarkFlux v1.0 compares the total $γ$-ray flux to a joint-likelihood analysis of fifteen dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) analyzed by the $Fermi$-LAT collaboration. DarkFlux automatically provides data tables and can plot the output of the three modules. In this manual, we briefly motivate this indirect-detection computer tool and review the essential DM physics. We then describe the several modules of DarkFlux in greater detail. Finally, we show how to install and run DarkFlux and provide two worked examples demonstrating its capabilities.

Exploring the phenomenology of weak adjoint scalars in minimal $R$-symmetric models

We examine the phenomenology of the scalar fields in weak and Higgs sectors of minimal $R$-symmetric models, in particular the 'swino' and 'sbino', the scalar partners to the chiral fields that marry the electroweak gauge bosons in Dirac gaugino models. These fields are in adjoint representations of $SU(2)$ and $U(1)$ and have both $CP$-even and $CP$-odd components. The interactions of these new states are summarized, and decay widths are computed analytically to one loop order. We discuss the tree level contributions of these new states to the mass spectrum of MSSM sfermions. We also explore production cross sections and decay signatures at colliders for several chosen benchmarks. We find that large regions of parameter space are unconstrained by present collider data.

New physics in triboson event topologies

We present a study of the sensitivity to models of new physics of proton collisions resulting in three electroweak bosons. As a benchmark, we analyze models in which an exotic scalar field $ϕ$ is produced in association with a gauge boson ($V=γ$ or $Z$). The scalar then decays to a pair of bosons, giving the process $pp\rightarrow ϕV\rightarrow V'V"V$. We interpret our results in a set of effective field theories where the exotic scalar fields couple to the Standard Model through pairs of electroweak gauge bosons. We estimate the sensitivity of the LHC and HL-LHC datasets and find sensitivity to cross sections in the 10 fb -- 0.5 fb range, corresponding to scalar masses of 500 GeV to 2 TeV and effective operator coefficients up to 35 TeV.

The phenomenological cornucopia of SU(3) exotica

We introduce an effort to catalog the gauge-invariant interactions of Standard Model (SM) particles and new fields in a variety of representations of the SM color gauge group $\text{SU}(3)_{\text{c}}$. In this first installment, we direct this effort toward fields in the six-dimensional (sextet, $\boldsymbol{6}$) representation. We consider effective operators of mass dimension up to seven (comprehensively up to dimension six), featuring both scalar and fermionic color sextets. We use an iterative tensor-product method to identify the color invariants underpinning such operators, emphasizing structures that have received little attention to date. In order to demonstrate the utility of our approach, we study a simple but novel model of color-sextet fields at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We compute cross sections for an array of new production channels enabled by our operators, including single-sextet production and sextet production in association with photons or leptons. We also discuss dijet-resonance constraints on a sextet fermion. This example shows that there remains a wide array of fairly minimal but well motivated and unexplored models with extended strong sectors as we await the high-luminosity LHC.

Exploring nearly degenerate higgsinos using mono-$Z/W$ signal

We propose a new search strategy for higgsinos. Assuming associated production of higgsino-like pairs with a $W$ or $Z$ boson, we search in the missing energy plus hadronically-tagged vector boson channel. We place sensitivity limits for (HL-)LHC searches assuming $\mathcal{O}({1\mathrm{-}3.5}~\mathrm{GeV})$ mass differences between the lightest neutral and charged states. We point out that using the $E_T^\mathrm{miss}$ distribution significantly increases the sensitivity of this search. We find the higgsinos up to 110 (210) GeV can be excluded with $139~(300)~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ data. The full data of the HL-LHC will exclude (discover) the higgsinos up to 520 (280) GeV.

Indirect Detection Constraints on s and t Channel Simplified Models of Dark Matter

Recent Fermi-LAT observations of dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the Milky Way have placed strong limits on the gamma-ray flux from dark matter annihilation. In order to produce the strongest limit on the dark matter annihilation cross-section, the observations of each dwarf galaxy have typically been "stacked" in a joint-likelihood analysis, utilizing optical observations to constrain the dark matter density profile in each dwarf. These limits have typically been computed only for singular annihilation final states, such as $b\bar{b}$ or $τ^+τ^-$. In this paper, we generalize this approach by producing an independent joint-likelihood analysis to set constraints on models where the dark matter particle annihilates to multiple final state fermions. We interpret these results in the context of the most popular simplified models, including those with s- and t-channel dark matter annihilation through scalar and vector mediators. We present our results as constraints on the minimum dark matter mass and the mediator sector parameters. Additionally, we compare our simplified model results to those of Effective Field Theory contact interactions in the high-mass limit.

Supersoft SUSY Models and the 750 GeV Diphoton Excess, Beyond Effective Operators

We propose that the sbino, the scalar partner of a Dirac bino can explain the 750 GeV diphoton excess observed by ATLAS and CMS . We analyze a model in which the sbino couples to pairs of Standard Model (SM) gauge bosons. We analyze an effective operator model, as well as a completion in which the sbino couples to pairs of gauge bosons through loops of heavy sfermions. We find that the sbino may be given an appreciable decay width through tree level coupling in the Higgs or Higgsino sector and additionally fit the 750 GeV excess by considering gluon fusion processes with decay to diphotons.

Indirect Detection Constraints on the Model Space of Dark Matter Effective Theories

Using limits on photon flux from Dwarf Spheroidal galaxies, we place bounds on the parameter space of models in which Dark Matter annihilates into multiple final state particle pair channels. We derive constraints on effective operator models with Dark Matter couplings to third generation fermions and to pairs of Standard Model vector bosons. We present limits in various slices of model parameter space along with estimations of the region of maximal validity of the effective operator approach for indirect detection. We visualize our bounds for models with multiple final state annihilations by projecting parameter space constraints onto triangles, a technique familiar from collider physics; and we compare our bounds to collider limits on equivalent models.

New Calculations in Dirac Gaugino Models: Operators, Expansions, and Effects

In this work we calculate important one loop SUSY-breaking parameters in models with Dirac gauginos, which are implied by the existence of heavy messenger fields. We find that these SUSY-breaking effects are all related by a small number of parameters, thus the general theory is tightly predictive. In order to make the most accurate analyses of one loop effects, we introduce calculations using an expansion in SUSY breaking messenger mass, rather than relying on postulating the forms of effective operators. We use this expansion to calculate one loop contributions to gaugino masses, non-holomorphic SM adjoint masses, new A-like and B-like terms, and linear terms. We also test the Higgs potential in such models, and calculate one loop contributions to the Higgs mass in certain limits of R-symmetric models, finding a very large contribution in many regions of the $μ$-less MSSM, where Higgs fields couple to standard model adjoint fields.

Searching for Standard Model Adjoint Scalars with Diboson Resonance Signatures

We explore the phenomenology of scalar fields in the adjoint representation of SM gauge groups. We write a general set of dimension 5 effective operators in which SM adjoint scalars couple to pairs of standard model bosons. Using these effective operators, we explore new possible decay channels of a scalar color octet into a gluon and a Z boson/ gluon and a photon. We recast several analyses from Run I of the LHC to find constraints on an a scalar octet decaying into these channels, and we project the discovery potential of color octets in our gluon+photon channel for the 14 TeV run of LHC.

Chaotic Hybrid Inflation with a Gauged B - L

In this paper we present a novel formulation of chaotic hybrid inflation in supergravity. The model includes a waterfall field which spontaneously breaks a gauged $U_1(B-L)$ at a GUT scale. This allows for the possibility of future model building which includes the standard formulation of baryogenesis via leptogenesis with the waterfall field decaying into right-handed neutrinos. We have not considered the following issues in this short paper, i.e. supersymmetry breaking, dark matter or the gravitino or moduli problems. Our focus is on showing the compatibility of the present model with Planck, WMAP and Bicep2 data.

Collider Bounds on Indirect Dark Matter Searches: The $WW$ Final State

We describe an effective theory of interaction between pairs of dark matter particles (denoted $χ$) and pairs of $W$ bosons. Such an interaction could accommodate $χ\barχ\rightarrow WW$ processes, which are a major focus of indirect dark matter experiments, as well as $pp \rightarrow W\rightarrow Wχ\barχ$ processes, which would predict excesses at the LHC in the $W$+MET final-state. We reinterpret an ATLAS $W$+MET analysis in the hadronic mode and translate the bounds to the space of indirect detection signals. We also reinterpret the $W$+MET analysis in terms of graviton theory through the processes $W\rightarrow WG$ and $Z\rightarrow ZG$ in which $G$ is invisible. Finally, the final state is interpreted in terms of a $W'$ model where $W'\rightarrow WZ$, where $W$ decays hadronically and $Z$ decays to neutrinos.

Degenerate gaugino mass region and mono-boson collider signatures

In this paper we discuss search strategies at the LHC for light electroweak gauginos which are mostly Wino-like, Higgsino-like or an admixture. These states are typically degenerate with decay products that are less energetic and hence difficult to detect. In addition, their production cross-sections at a hadron collider are suppressed compared to colored states such as the gluinos. In order to detect these states one needs to trigger on initial or final state radiation. Many previous analyses have focussed on mono-jet and mono-photon triggers. In the paper we argue and show that these triggers are unlikely to succeed, due to the large background from QCD backgrounds for the mono-jet searches and the fact that the $p_T$ distribution of the mono-photons are rapidly decreasing functions of $p_T$. We show this with both an analytic calculation of photons in the initial state radiation and also a detailed numerical analysis. We then argue that mono-Z triggers, from Z decaying into charged leptons may well provide the best search strategy, in particular for Higgsino-like and mixed cases.

Mono-Higgs: a new collider probe of dark matter

We explore the LHC phenomenology of dark matter (DM) pair production in association with a 125 GeV Higgs boson. This signature, dubbed `mono-Higgs,' appears as a single Higgs boson plus missing energy from DM particles escaping the detector. We perform an LHC background study for mono-Higgs signals at $\sqrt{s} = 8$ and $14$ TeV for four Higgs boson decay channels: $γγ$, $b \bar b$, and $ZZ^* \to 4\ell$, $\ell\ell j j$. We estimate the LHC sensitivities to a variety of new physics scenarios within the frameworks of both effective operators and simplified models. For all these scenarios, the $γγ$ channel provides the best sensitivity, whereas the $b\bar b$ channel suffers from a large $t \bar t$ background. Mono-Higgs is unlike other mono-$X$ searches ($X$=jet, photon, etc.), since the Higgs boson is unlikely to be radiated as initial state radiation, and therefore probes the underlying DM vertex directly.

Confronting the Fermi Line with LHC data: an Effective Theory of Dark Matter Interaction with Photons

We describe an effective theory of interaction between pairs of dark matter particles and pairs of photons. Such an interaction could accomodate $χ\barχ\rightarrowγγ$ processes which might be the cause of the observed feature in the FermiLAT spectrum, as well as $γ^*/Z\rightarrow γχ\barχ$ processes, which would predict excesses at the LHC in the $γ+\missET$ final-state. We reinterpret an ATLAS $γ+\missET$ analysis and the observed Fermi feature in the parameter space of our new effective theory to assess their consistency.

Collider searches for dark matter in events with a Z boson and missing energy

Searches for dark matter at colliders typically involve signatures with energetic initial-state radiation without visible recoil particles. Searches for mono-jet or mono-photon signatures have yielded powerful constraints on dark matter interactions with Standard Model particles. We extend this to the mono-Z signature and reinterpret an ATLAS analysis of events with a Z boson and missing transverse momentum to derive constraints on dark matter interaction mass scale and nucleon cross sections in the context of effective field theories describing dark matter which interacts via heavy mediator particles with quarks or weak bosons.

Dirac Gauginos, Negative Supertraces and Gauge Mediation

In an attempt to maximize General Gauge Mediated parameter space, I propose simple models in which gauginos and scalars are generated from disconnected mechanisms. In my models Dirac gauginos are generated through the supersoft mechanism, while independent R-symmetric scalar masses are generated through operators involving non-zero messenger supertrace. I propose several new methods for generating negative messenger supertraces which result in viable positive mass squareds for MSSM scalars. The resultant spectra are novel, compressed and may contain light fermionic SM adjoint fields.

Pseudo-Higgs Signals a the LHC

We consider general fermi-phobic scenarios in which excess events in diphoton or WW/ZZ resonances may be seen at LHC. These Higgs like signals do not necessarily suggest that the new resonance is a particle with Yukawa couplings nor do we know that it is responsible for electroweak symmetry breaking. We can, however, extract two facts from it, this particle couples to pairs of SU(2) and U(1) gauge bosons and it must be a scalar, pseudoscalar, or tensor. We consider the signals of general operators up to effective dimension 5 in which a new scalar, psuedo-scalar, or tensor particle may couple to pairs of standard model gauge bosons. This particle may or may not be charged under the standard model gauge groups, and may be produced via gluon fusion or EW vector boson fusion.

Color-Octet-Electroweak-Doublet Scalars and the CDF Dijet Anomaly

We study the phenomenology of color-octet scalars in the (8, 2)1/2 representation in the context of the 3.2σexcess, in the dijet invariant mass spectrum of the W+jj final state, recently observed by the CDF collaboration. We consider the region of parameter space with a sizable mass splitting between the charged and neutral color-octet scalars and consistent with electroweak precision data. We implement the principle of Minimal Flavor Violation (MFV) in order to suppress FCNC currents and reduce the number of free parameters. The excess in the W+jj channel corresponds to the charged current decay of the heavier neutral octet scalar into its lighter charged partner which decays into the two jets. In the MFV scenario, the production of the neutral color-octet is dominated by gluon fusion due to the Yukawa suppression of production via initial state quarks. As a result, no visible excess is expected in the γ+jj channel due to Yukawa and CKM suppression. Contributions to the Z+jj final state are suppressed for a mass spectrum where the decay of the heavier color-octet to this final state is mediated by an off-shell neutral color-octet partner. MFV allows one to control fraction of bottom quarks in the final state jets by a single ratio of two free parameters.

Higgs Decays to Unstable Neutrinos: Collider Constraints from Inclusive Like-Sign Dilepton Searches

We study the pair production of fourth generation neutrinos from the decay of an on-shell Higgs produced by gluon fusion. In a fourth generation scenario, the Higgs branching fraction into fourth generation neutrinos may be quite large. In the case that the unstable heavy neutrinos are a mixed Majorana and Dirac state, neutrinos pair-produced from Higgs decay will yield a substantial number of like-sign dilepton events. In this article we use inclusive like-sign dilepton searches from hadron colliders to constrain the theoretical parameter space of fourth generation leptons.

Higgs Search Constraints on Fourth Generation Scenarios with General Lepton Sectors

I present a general exclusion bound for the Higgs in fourth generation scenarios with a general lepton sector. Recent Higgs searches in fourth generation scenarios rule out the entire Higgs mass region between 120 and 600 GeV. That such a large range of Higgs masses are excluded is due to the presence of extra heavy flavors of quarks, which substantially increase Higgs production from gluon fusion over the Standard Model rate. However, if heavy fourth generation neutrinos are less than half of the Higgs mass, they can dominate the Higgs decay branching fraction, overtaking the standard Higgs to WW* decay rate. The Higgs mass exclusion in a fourth generation scenario is shown most generally to be 155-600 GeV, and is highly dependent on the fourth generation neutrino mixing parameter.

Axions in Gauge Mediation

In supersymmetric theories, the presence of axions usually implies the existence of a non-compact, (pseudo)moduli space. In gauge mediated models, the axion would seem a particularly promising dark matter candidate. The cosmology of the moduli then constrains the gravitino mass and the axion decay constant; the former can't be much below 10 MeV; the latter can't be much larger than 10^{13} GeV. Axinos, when identifiable, are typically heavy and do not play an important role in cosmology.

Fourth Generation Lepton Sectors with Stable Majorana Neutrinos: From LEP to LHC

I analyze a fourth generation lepton sector in which the lightest particle is a stable Majorana neutrino. In this scenario fourth generation neutrinos have both a Dirac and Majorana mass, resulting in two Majorana neutrino mass eigenstates. A reanalysis of LEP's lower mass bound is performed on stable Majorana neutrinos from the Z width and the lower mass bound is loosened. I also extrapolate LEP's SUSY squark search with a 2 jet plus missing missing energy final state to the production and decay of a pair of heavy Majorana neutrinos; here it is expected that significant regions of the neutrino mass plane may be ruled out. Finally, a search strategy is proposed for heavy fourth generation neutrino pairs at LHC in the four lepton plus missing energy channel. Exclusions are set in the neutrino mass plane for 30 inverse fb of data at LHC for 13 TeV.

Revisiting Constraints on Fourth Generation Neutrino Masses

We revisit the current experimental bounds on fourth-generation Majorana neutrino masses, including the effects of right handed neutrinos. Current bounds from LEPII are significantly altered by a global analysis. We show that the current bounds on fourth generation neutrinos decaying to eW and mu W can be reduced to about 80 GeV (from the current bound of 90 GeV), while a neutrino decaying to tau W can be as light as 62.1 GeV. The weakened bound opens up a neutrino decay channel for intermediate mass Higgs, and interesting multi-particle final states for Higgs and fourth generation lepton decays.

Searches for Fourth Generation Charged Leptons

We study the production and decay of fourth generation leptons at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).We find that for charged leptons with masses under a few hundred GeV, the dominant collider signal comes from the production through a W-boson of a charged and neutral fourth generation lepton. We present a sensitivity study for this process in events with two like-sign charged leptons and at least two associated jets. We show that with sqrts = 7 TeV and 1 inverse fb of data, the LHC can exclude fourth generation charged leptons with masses up to 250 GeV.

Gauge Mediation with D-terms

I propose implementing General Gauge Mediation using the class of $SU(N) \times U(1)$ SUSY breaking models. As an existence proof, I have utilized the 4-1 model in building multi-parameter gauge mediation. These hidden sectors are relatively easy to use and avoid several model building pitfalls such as runaway directions. In addition models require no special tuning and may produce as many parameters as general gauge mediation allows.
