Bye binormal: analysing the joint PDF of galaxy density and weak lensing convergence

At any given scale, 3$\times$2-point statistics extract only three numbers from the joint distribution of the cosmic matter density and galaxy density fluctuations: their variances and their covariance. It is well known that the full shape of the PDF of those fluctuations contains significantly more information than can be accessed through these three numbers. But the study of the PDF of cosmic density fluctuations in real observational data is still in its infancy. Here we present \verb|CosMomentum|, a public software toolkit for calculating theoretical predictions for the full shape of the joint distribution of a line-of-sight projected tracer density and the gravitational lensing convergence. We demonstrate that an analysis of this full shape of the PDF can indeed disentangle complicated tracer bias and stochasticity relations from signatures of cosmic structure growth. Our paper also provides back-drop for an upcoming follow-up study, which prepares PDF analyses for application to observational data by incorporating the impact of realistic weak lensing systematics.

The Covariance of Squeezed Bispectrum Configurations

We measure the halo bispectrum covariance in a large set of N-body simulations and compare it with theoretical expectations. We find a large correlation among (even mildly) squeezed halo bispectrum configurations. A similarly large correlation can be found between squeezed triangles and the long-wavelength halo power spectrum. This shows that the diagonal Gaussian contribution fails to describe, even approximately, the full covariance in these cases. We compare our numerical estimate with a model that includes, in addition to the Gaussian one, only the non-Gaussian terms that are large for squeezed configurations. We find that accounting for these large terms in the modeling greatly improves the agreement of the full covariance with simulations. We apply these results to a simple Fisher matrix forecast, and find that constraints on primordial non-Gaussianity are degraded by a factor of $\sim 2$ when a non-Gaussian covariance is assumed instead of the diagonal, Gaussian approximation.

From matter to galaxies: General relativistic bias for the one-loop bispectrum

We write down the Lagrangian bias expansion in general relativity up to 4th order in terms of operators describing the curvature of an early-time hypersurface for comoving observers. They can be easily expanded in synchronous or comoving gauges. This is necessary for the computation of the one-loop halo bispectrum, where relativistic effects can be degenerate with a primordial non-Gaussian signal. Since the bispectrum couples scales, an accurate prediction of the squeezed limit behavior needs to be both non-linear and relativistic. We then evolve the Lagrangian bias operators in time in comoving gauge, obtaining non-local operators analogous to what is known in the Newtonian limit. Finally, we show how to renormalize the bias expansion at an arbitrary time and find that this is crucial in order to cancel unphysical $1/k^2$ divergences in the large-scale power spectrum and bispectrum that could be mistaken for a contamination to the non-Gaussian signal.
