Fuzzy vectors via convex bodies

In the most accessible terms this paper presents a convex-geometric approach to the study of fuzzy vectors. Motivated by several key results from the theory of convex bodies, we establish a representation theorem of fuzzy vectors through support functions, in which a necessary and sufficient condition for a function to be the support function of a fuzzy vector is provided. As applications, symmetric and skew fuzzy vectors are postulated, based on which a Mareš core of each fuzzy vector is constructed through convex bodies and support functions, and it is shown that every fuzzy vector over the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space has a unique Mareš core if, and only if, the dimension $n=1$.

Quantale-valued dissimilarity

Inspired by the theory of apartness relations of Scott, we establish a positive theory of dissimilarity valued in an involutive quantale $\mathsf{Q}$ without the aid of negation. It is demonstrated that a set equipped with a $\mathsf{Q}$-valued dissimilarity is precisely a symmetric category enriched in a subquantaloid of the quantaloid of back diagonals of $\mathsf{Q}$. Interactions between $\mathsf{Q}$-valued dissimilarities and $\mathsf{Q}$-valued similarities (which are equivalent to $\mathsf{Q}$-valued equalities in the sense of H{ö}hle--Kubiak) are investigated with the help of lax functors. In particular, it is shown that similarities and dissimilarities are interdefinable if $\mathsf{Q}$ is a Girard quantale with a hermitian and cyclic dualizing element.

Towards probabilistic partial metric spaces: Diagonals between distance distributions

The quantale of distance distributions is of fundamental importance for understanding probabilistic metric spaces as enriched categories. Motivated by the categorical interpretation of partial metric spaces, we are led to investigate the quantaloid of diagonals between distance distributions, which is expected to establish the categorical foundation of probabilistic partial metric spaces. Observing that the quantale of distance distributions w.r.t. an arbitrary continuous t-norm is non-divisible, we precisely characterize diagonals between distance distributions, and prove that one-step functions are the only distance distributions on which the set of diagonals coincides with the generated down set.

$\mathcal{Q}$-closure spaces

For a small quantaloid $\mathcal{Q}$, a $\mathcal{Q}$-closure space is a small category enriched in $\mathcal{Q}$ equipped with a closure operator on its presheaf category. We investigate $\mathcal{Q}$-closure spaces systematically with specific attention paid to their morphisms and, as preordered fuzzy sets are a special kind of quantaloid-enriched categories, in particular fuzzy closure spaces on fuzzy sets are introduced as an example. By constructing continuous relations that naturally generalize continuous maps, it is shown (in the generality of the $\mathcal{Q}$-version) that the category of closure spaces and closed continuous relations is equivalent to the category of complete lattices and $\sup$-preserving maps.

Chu connections and back diagonals between $\mathcal{Q}$-distributors

Chu connections and back diagonals are introduced as morphisms for distributors between categories enriched in a small quantaloid $\mathcal{Q}$. These notions, meaningful for closed bicategories, dualize the constructions of arrow categories and the Freyd completion of categories. It is shown that, for a small quantaloid $\mathcal{Q}$, the category of complete $\mathcal{Q}$-categories and left adjoints is a retract of the dual of the category of $\mathcal{Q}$-distributors and Chu connections, and it is dually equivalent to the category of $\mathcal{Q}$-distributors and back diagonals. As an application of Chu connections, a postulation of the intuitive idea of reduction of formal contexts in the theory of formal concept analysis is presented, and a characterization of reducts of formal contexts is obtained.

Topological categories, quantaloids and Isbell adjunctions

In fairly elementary terms this paper presents, and expands upon, a recent result by Garner by which the notion of topologicity of a concrete functor is subsumed under the concept of total cocompleteness of enriched category theory. Motivated by some key results of the 1970s, the paper develops all needed ingredients from the theory of quantaloids in order to place essential results of categorical topology into the context of quantaloid-enriched category theory, a field that previously drew its motivation and applications from other domains, such as quantum logic and sheaf theory.

Adjunctions in Quantaloid-enriched Categories

This dissertation is devoted to a study of adjunctions concerning categories enriched over a quantaloid Q (or Q-categories for short), with the following types of adjunctions involved: (1) adjoint functors between Q-categories; (2) adjoint distributors between Q-categories; (3) adjoint functors between categories consisting of Q-categories. For a small quantaloid Q and a distributor between Q-categories, two adjunctions between the Q-categories of contravariant and covariant presheaves are presented. These adjunctions respectively extend the fundamental construction of Isbell adjunctions and Kan extensions in category theory, so, they will be called the Isbell adjunction and Kan adjunction, respectively. The functoriality of these constructions is the central topic of this dissertation. In order to achieve this, infomorphisms between distributors are introduced to organize distributors (as objects) into a category. Then we proceed as follows: first, the Isbell adjunction and Kan adjunction associated with each distributor between Q-categories give rise to two monads, which are respectively (covariant) functorial and contravariant functorial from the category of distributors and infomorphisms to the category of Q-closure spaces; second, it is shown that the assignments of a distributor to the fixed points of the two monads are respectively (covariant) functorial and contravariant functorial from the category of distributors and infomorphisms to that of skeletal complete Q-categories and left adjoint functors. As consequences of the functoriality of the above processes, three factorizations of the free cocompletion functor of Q-categories are presented. Finally, as applications, the theory of formal concept analysis and that of rough sets are extended to theories based on fuzzy relations between fuzzy sets.

Categories enriched over a quantaloid: Isbell adjunctions and Kan adjunctions

Each distributor between categories enriched over a small quantaloid Q gives rise to two adjunctions between the categories of contravariant and covariant presheaves, and hence to two monads. These two adjunctions are respectively generalizations of Isbell adjunctions and Kan extensions in category theory. It is proved that these two processes are functorial with infomorphisms playing as morphisms between distributors; and that the free cocompletion functor of Q-categories factors through both of these functors.
