A channel Brownian pump powered by an unbiased external force

A Brownian pump of particles in an asymmetric finite tube is investigated in the presence of an unbiased external force. The pumping system is bounded by two particle reservoirs. It is found that the particles can be pumped through the tube from a reservoir at low concentration to one at the same or higher concentration. There exists an optimized value of temperature (or the amplitude of the external force) at which the pumping capacity takes its maximum value. The pumping capacity decreases with increasing the radius at the bottleneck of the tube.

Brownian pump in nonlinear diffusive media

A Brownian pump in nonlinear diffusive media is investigated in the presence of an unbiased external force. The pumping system is embedded in a finite region and bounded by two particle reservoirs. In the adiabatic limit, we obtain the analytical expressions of the current and the pumping capacity as a function of temperature for normal diffusion, subdiffusion and superdiffusion. It is found that important anomalies are detected in comparison to the normal diffusion case. The superdiffusive regime, compared with the normal one, exhibits an opposite current for low temperatures. In subdiffusive regime, the current may become forbidden for low temperatures and negative for high temperatures.

Phase shift induces currents in a periodic tube

The average current of an overdamped Brownian particle moving along the axis of a three-dimensional periodic tube is investigated in the presence of a symmetric potential and a temporally symmetric unbiased external force. Reduction of the spatial dimensionality from two or three physical dimensions to an effective one dimensional system entails the appearance of not only an entropic barrier but also an effective diffusion coefficient. We find that the phase shift between the tube shape and the potential can break the symmetry of the effective potential and can induce net currents. Under optimal condition, the current as a function of temperature and the phase shift possesses many extrema of alternating signs. The current may reverse its direction several times when temperature or the phase shift is changed. Our model is to describe the movement of molecular motors along microtubule.
