Partially observable systems and quotient entropy via graphs

We consider the category of partially observable dynamical systems, to which the entropy theory of dynamical systems extends functorially. This leads us to introduce quotient-topological entropy. We discuss the structure that emerges. We show how quotient entropy can be explicitly computed by symbolic coding. To do so, we make use of the relationship between the category of dynamical systems and the category of graphs, a connection mediated by Markov partitions and topological Markov chains.

An adaptive voter model on simplicial complexes

Collective decision making processes lie at the heart of many social, political and economic challenges. The classical voter model is a well-established conceptual model to study such processes. In this work, we define a new form of adaptive (or co-evolutionary) voter model posed on a simplicial complex, i.e., on a certain class of hypernetworks/hypergraphs. We use the persuasion rule along edges of the classical voter model and the recently studied re-wiring rule of edges towards like-minded nodes, and introduce a new peer pressure rule applied to three nodes connected via a 2-simplex. This simplicial adaptive voter model is studied via numerical simulation. We show that adding the effect of peer pressure to an adaptive voter model leaves its fragmentation transition, i.e., the transition upon varying the re-wiring rate from a single majority state into to a fragmented state of two different opinion subgraphs, intact. Yet, above and below the fragmentation transition, we observe that the peer pressure has substantial quantitative effects. It accelerates the transition to a single-opinion state below the transition and also speeds up the system dynamics towards fragmentation above the transition. Furthermore, we quantify that there is a multiscale hierarchy in the model leading to the depletion of 2-simplices, before the depletion of active edges. This leads to the conjecture that many other dynamic network models on simplicial complexes may show a similar behaviour with respect to the sequential evolution of simplicies of different dimensions.

Characterization of Exact Lumpability for Vector Fields on Smooth Manifolds

We characterize the exact lumpability of smooth vector fields on smooth manifolds. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for lumpability and express them from four different perspectives, thus simplifying and generalizing various results from the literature that exist for Euclidean spaces. We introduce a partial connection on the pullback bundle that is related to the Bott connection and behaves like a Lie derivative. The lumping conditions are formulated in terms of the differential of the lumping map, its covariant derivative with respect to the connection and their respective kernels. Some examples are discussed to illustrate the theory.

Super Weyl invariance: BPS equations from heterotic worldsheets

It is well-known that the beta functions on a string worldsheet correspond to the target space equations of motion, e.g. the Einstein equations. We show that the BPS equations, i.e. the conditions of vanishing supersymmetry variations of the space-time fermions, can be directly derived from the worldsheet. To this end we consider the RNS-formulation of the heterotic string with (2,0) supersymmetry, which describes a complex torsion target space that supports a holomorphic vector bundle. After a detailed account of its quantization and renormalization, we establish that the cancellation of the Weyl anomaly combined with (2,0) finiteness implies the heterotic BPS conditions: At the one loop level the geometry is required to be conformally balanced and the gauge background has to satisfy the Hermitean Yang-Mills equations.

Qubit-Initialisation and Readout with Finite Coherent Amplitudes in Cavity QED

We consider a unitary transfer of an arbitrary state of a two-level atomic qubit in a cavity to the finite amplitude coherent state cavity field. Such transfer can be used to either provide an effective readout measurement on the atom by a subsequent measurement on the light field or as a method for initializing a fixed atomic state - a so-called "attractor state", studied previously for the case of an infinitely strong cavity field. We show that with a suitable adjustment of the coherent amplitude and evolution time the qubit transfers all its information to the field, attaining a selected state of high purity irrespectively of the initial state.
