Reflected Waves and Quantum Gravity

In the context of canonical quantum gravity, we consider the effects of a non-standard expression for the gravitational wave function on the evolution of inflationary perturbations. Such an expression and its effects may be generated by a sudden variation in the (nearly constant) inflaton potential. The resulting primordial spectra, up to the leading order, are affected in the short and in the long wavelength regime, where an oscillatory behavior with a non-negligible amplitude is superimposed on the standard semiclassical result. Moreover, a novel, non-perturbative, approach is used to study the evolution. Finally, a simplified application is fully illustrated and commented.

Regular black holes, universes without singularities, and phantom-scalar field transitions

We consider a procedure of elimination of cosmological singularities similar to that suggested in the recent paper by Simpson and Visser for the construction of regular black holes. It is shown that by imposing a non-singular cosmological evolution with a bounce in a flat Friedmann universe filled with a minimally coupled scalar field, we obtain a transition between the standard scalar field and its phantom counterpart. In this case, the potential of the scalar field has a non-analyticity of the cusp type. This result is also readily reproduced in the case of an anisotropic Bianchi I universe. We have also found a spherically symmetric static solution of the Einstein equations, free of singularities and sustained by a scalar field.

Beyond semiclassical time

We show that the usual Born-Oppenheimer type of approximation used in quantum gravity, in which a semiclassical time parameter emerges from a weak-coupling expansion of the Wheeler-DeWitt constraint, leads to a unitary theory at least up to the next-to-leading order in minisuperspace models. As there are no unitarity-violating terms, this settles the issue of unitarity at this order, which has been much debated in the literature. Furthermore, we also show that the conserved inner product is gauge-fixed in the sense that the measure is related to the Faddeev-Popov determinant associated with the choice of semiclassical time as a reparametrization gauge. This implies that the Born-Oppenheimer approach to the problem of time is, in fact, an instance of a relational quantum theory, in which transition amplitudes can be related to conditional probabilities.

Relational observables, reference frames, and conditional probabilities

We discuss the construction of relational observables in time-reparametrization invariant quantum mechanics and we argue that their physical interpretation can be understood in terms of conditional probabilities, which are defined from the solutions of the quantum constraint equation in a generalization of the Page-Wootters formalism. In this regard, we show how conditional expectation values of worldline tensor fields are related to quantum averages of suitably defined relational observables. We also comment on how the dynamics of these observables can be related to a notion of quantum reference frames. After presenting the general formalism, we analyze a recollapsing cosmological model, for which we construct unitarily evolving quantum relational observables. We conclude with some remarks about the relevance of these results for the construction and interpretation of diffeomorphism-invariant operators in quantum gravity.

Unitarity of quantum-gravitational corrections to primordial fluctuations in the Born-Oppenheimer approach

We revisit the calculation of quantum-gravitational corrections to the power spectra of scalar and tensor perturbations in the Born-Oppenheimer approach to quantum gravity. We focus on the issue of the definition of the inner product of the theory and the unitarity of the corrections to the dynamics of the cosmological perturbations. We argue that the correction terms are unitary, provided the inner product is defined in a suitable way, which can be related to a notion of gauge-fixing the time variable and the use of conditional probabilities in quantum cosmology. We compare the corrections obtained within this framework to earlier results in the literature and we conclude with some remarks on the physical interpretation of the correction terms.

Construction of quantum Dirac observables and the emergence of WKB time

We describe a method of construction of gauge-invariant operators (Dirac observables or ``evolving constants of motion'') from the knowledge of the eigenstates of the gauge generator in time-reparametrization invariant mechanical systems. These invariant operators evolve unitarily with respect to an arbitrarily chosen time variable. We emphasize that the dynamics is relational, both in the classical and quantum theories. In this framework, we show how the ``emergent Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin time'' often employed in quantum cosmology arises from a weak-coupling expansion of invariant transition amplitudes, and we illustrate an example of singularity avoidance in a vacuum Bianchi I (Kasner) model.
