From Quarks and Gluons to Hadrons: Chiral Symmetry Breaking in Dynamical QCD

We present an analysis of the dynamics of two-flavour QCD in the vacuum. Special attention is payed to the transition from the high energy quark-gluon regime to the low energy regime governed by hadron dynamics. This is done within a functional renormalisation group approach to QCD amended by dynamical hadronisation techniques. The latter allow us to describe conveniently the transition from the perturbative high-energy regime to the nonperturbative low-energy limit without suffering from a fine-tuning of model parameters. In the present work, we apply these techniques to two-flavour QCD with physical quark masses and show how the dynamics of the dominant low-energy degrees of freedom emerge from the underlying quark-gluon dynamics.

Landau gauge Yang-Mills correlation functions

We investigate Landau gauge $SU(3)$ Yang-Mills theory in a systematic vertex expansion scheme for the effective action with the functional renormalisation group. Particular focus is put on the dynamical creation of the gluon mass gap at non-perturbative momenta and the consistent treatment of quadratic divergences. The non-perturbative ghost and transverse gluon propagators as well as the momentum-dependent ghost-gluon, three-gluon and four-gluon vertices are calculated self-consistently with the classical action as only input. The apparent convergence of the expansion scheme is discussed and within the errors, our numerical results are in quantitative agreement with available lattice results.

Functional renormalisation group in a finite volume

We study a $ϕ^4$-theory at finite temperature in a finite volume. Quantum, thermal and volume fluctuations are treated with the functional renormalisation group. Specifically, we focus on the interplay of temperature and length scales driving the system. We find that thermodynamical observables at finite volume such as the pressure approach the infinite volume limit similarly to that of the vanishing temperature limit. We also advance the functional renormalisation group method at finite volume. In particular, we identify requirements for suitable regulators that admit the exponential thermal and finite volume decay properties.

Angular distribution of medium-induced QCD cascades

We provide a complete description of the angular distribution of gluons in a medium-induced QCD cascade. We identify two components in the distribution, a soft component dominated by soft multiple scatterings, and a hard component dominated by a few hard scatterings. The typical angle that marks the boundary between these two components is determined analytically as a function of the energy of the observed gluon and the size of the medium. We construct the complete solution (beyond the diffusion approximation) in the regime where multiple branchings dominate the dynamics of the cascade in the form of a power series in the number of collisions with the medium particles. The coefficients of this expansions are related to the moments of the distribution in the diffusion approximation and are determined analytically. The angular distribution may be useful in phenomenological studies of jet shapes in heavy-ion collisions.

Exploratory study of the temperature dependence of magnetic vertices in SU(2) Landau gauge Yang--Mills theory

Vertices describe the interactions between the fundamental degrees of freedom, and are therefore of vital importance in many ab-initio descriptions of field theory, especially using functional methods. To this end, we present the first lattice study of the thermal behavior of (minimal) Landau-gauge SU(2) Yang--Mills three-point functions, i.e. three-gluon and ghost-gluon vertices. Focusing on the chromomagnetic sector, we find that the phase transition mainly affects the three-gluon vertex, while the ghost-gluon vertex is relatively inert.

Medium-induced jet evolution: wave turbulence and energy loss

We study the gluon cascade generated via successive medium-induced branchings by an energetic parton propagating through a dense QCD medium. We focus on the high-energy regime where the energy $E$ of the leading particle is much larger than the characteristic medium scale $ω_c=\hat q L^2/2$, with $\hat q$ the jet quenching parameter and $L$ the distance travelled through the medium. In this regime the leading particle loses only a small fraction $\simα_s(ω_c/E)$ of its energy and can be treated as a steady source of radiation for gluons with energies $ω\leω_c$. For this effective problem with a source, we obtain exact analytic solutions for the gluon spectrum and the energy flux. The solutions exhibit wave turbulence: the basic physical process is a continuing fragmentation which is `quasi-democratic' (i.e. quasi-local in energy) and which provides an energy transfer from the source to the medium at a rate (the energy flux $\mathcal{F}$) which is quasi-independent of $ω$. The locality of the branching process implies a spectrum of the Kolmogorov-Obukhov type, i.e. a power-law spectrum which is a fixed point of the branching process and whose strength is proportional to the energy flux: $D(ω)\sim\mathcal{F}/\sqrtω$ for $ω\llω_c$. Via this turbulent flow, the gluon cascade loses towards the medium an energy $ΔE\simα_s^2ω_c$, which is independent of the initial energy $E$ of the leading particle and of the details of the thermalization mechanism at the low-energy end of the cascade. This energy is carried away by very soft gluons, which propagate at very large angles with respect to the jet axis. Our predictions for the value of $ΔE$ and for its angular distribution appear to agree quite well, qualitatively and even semi-quantitatively, with the phenomenology of di-jet asymmetry in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC.

Confinement from Correlation Functions

We compute the Polyakov loop potential in Yang--Mills theory from the fully dressed primitively divergent correlation functions only. This is done in a variety of functional approaches ranging from functional renormalisation group equations over Dyson--Schwinger equations to two-particle irreducible functionals. We present a confinement criterion that links the infrared behaviour of propagators and vertices to the Polyakov loop expectation value. The present work extends the works of [1-3] to general functional methods and sharpens the confinement criterion presented there. The computations are based on the thermal correlation functions in the Landau gauge calculated in [4-6].

Critical Point and Deconfinement from Dyson-Schwinger Equations

We employ the Dyson-Schwinger equations for quark and gluon propagators in order to study QCD with 2+1 flavours at finite temperature and density. In a suitable truncation for these equations, we determine the position of the critical end-point as well as the deconfinement temperature at all chemical potentials. For the latter, the Polyakov-loop potential is obtained from the QCD propagators. This is possible for the first time at finite chemical potential, with implications for effective models.

Gluon spectral functions and transport coefficients in Yang--Mills theory

We compute non-perturbative gluon spectral functions at finite temperature in quenched QCD with the maximum entropy method. We also provide a closed loop equation for the spectral function of the energy-momentum tensor in terms of the gluon spectral function. This setup is then used for computing the shear viscosity over entropy ratio $η/s$ in a temperature range from about $0.4\, T_c$ to $4.5\, T_c$. The ratio $η/s$ has a minimum at about $1.25\, T_c$ with the value of about 0.115. We also discuss extensions of the present results to QCD.

Phase transitions and gluodynamics in 2-colour matter at high density

We investigate 2-colour QCD with 2 flavours of Wilson fermion at nonzero temperature T and quark chemical potential mu, with a pion mass of 700 MeV (m_pi/m_rho=0.8). From temperature scans at fixed mu we find that the critical temperature for the superfluid to normal transition depends only very weakly on mu above the onset chemical potential, while the deconfinement crossover temperature is clearly decreasing with mu. We find indications of a region of superfluid but deconfined matter at high mu and intermediate T. The static quark potential determined from the Wilson loop is found to exhibit a 'string tension' that increases at large mu in the 'deconfined' region. The electric (longitudinal) gluon propagator in Landau gauge becomes strongly screened with increasing temperature and chemical potential. The magnetic (transverse) gluon shows little sensitivity to temperature, and exhibits a mild enhancement at intermediate mu before becoming suppressed at large mu.

Phase transitions in dense 2-colour QCD

We investigate 2-colour QCD with 2 flavours of Wilson fermion at nonzero temperature T and quark chemical potential mu, with a pion mass of 700 MeV (m_pi/m_rho=0.8). From temperature scans at fixed mu we find that the critical temperature for the superfluid to normal transition depends only very weakly on mu above the onset chemical potential, while the deconfinement crossover temperature is clearly decreasing with mu. We also present results for the Landau-gauge gluon propagator in the hot and dense medium.

Polyakov loop potential at finite density

The Polyakov loop potential serves to distinguish between the confined hadronic and the deconfined quark-gluon plasma phases of QCD. For Nf=2+1 quark flavors with physical masses we determine the Polyakov loop potential at finite temperature and density and extract the location of the deconfinement transition. We find a cross-over at small values of the chemical potential running into a critical end-point at mu/T > 1.

Quark Confinement from Correlation Functions

We study quark confinement by computing the Polyakov loop potential in Yang--Mills theory within different non-perturbative functional continuum approaches [1]. We extend previous studies in the formalism of the functional renormalisation group and complement those with findings from Dyson--Schwinger equations and two-particle-irreducible functionals. These methods are formulated in terms of low order Green functions. This allows to identify a criterion for confinement solely in terms of the low-momentum behaviour of correlators.

Yang-Mills correlation functions at finite temperature

We put forward a continuum approach for computing finite temperature correlation functions in Yang-Mills theory. This is done in a functional renormalisation group setting which allows for the construction of purely thermal RG-flows. This approach is applied to the ghost and gluon propagators as well as the ghost-gluon vertex in the Landau gauge. We present results in a temperature regime going from vanishing temperature to temperatures far above the confinement-deconfinement temperature Tc. Our findings compare well with the lattice results available.

Yang-Mills theory at non-vanishing temperature

We compute ghost and gluon propagators of Yang-Mills theory in the Landau gauge at non-vanishing temperature within a functional renormalisation group setting. We construct purely thermal flows, that project onto thermal fluctuations only. For temperatures and momenta above the confinement-deconfinement temperature Tc the electric propagator shows a thermal suppression due to Debye screening. The magnetic gluon propagator shows a thermal scaling and tends towards the three-dimensional one. In this region both propagators match the lattice propagators. The thermal scaling is also reflected in the infrared suppression of the ghost-gluon vertex. For temperatures below Tc the electric propagator shows an enhancement which is in qualitative agreement with the lattice behaviour.

Infrared Behaviour of Landau Gauge Yang-Mills Theory with a Fundamentally Charged Scalar Field

The infrared behaviour of the n-point functions of a Yang-Mills theory with a charged scalar field in the fundamental representation of SU(N) is studied in the formalism of Dyson-Schwinger equations. Assuming a stable skeleton expansion solutions in form of power laws for the Green functions are obtained. For a massless scalar field the uniform limit is sufficient to describe the infrared scaling behaviour of vertices. Not taking into account a possible Higgs-phase it turns out that kinematic singularities play an important role for the scaling solutions of massive scalars. On a qualitative level scalar Yang-Mills theory yields similar scaling solutions as recently obtained for QCD.

On the Infrared Behavior of Landau Gauge Yang-Mills Theory with a Fundamentally Charged Scalar Field

Recently it has been shown that infrared singularities of Landau gauge QCD can confine static quarks via a linearly rising potential. We show that the same mechanism can also provide a confining interaction between charged scalar fields in the fundamental representation. This confirms that within this scenario static confinement is a universal property of the gauge sector even though it is formally represented in the functional equations of the matter sector. The simplifications compared to the fermionic case make the scalar system an ideal laboratory for a detailed analysis of the confinement mechanism in numerical studies of the functional equations as well as in gauge-fixed lattice simulations.

On the Infrared Behaviour of Landau Gauge Yang-Mills Theory with Differently Charged Scalar Fields

Recently it has been argued that infrared singularities of the quark-gluon vertex of Landau gauge QCD can confine static quarks via a linear potential. It is demonstrated that the same mechanism also may confine fundamental scalar fields. This opens the possibility that within functional approaches static confinement is an universal property of the gauge sector even though it is formally represented in the functional equations of the matter sector. The colour structure of Dyson-Schwinger equations for fundamental and adjoint scalar fields is determined for the gauge groups SU(N) and G(2) exhibiting interesting cancelations purely due to colour algebra.
