On the Mean First Arrival Time of Brownian Particles on Riemannian Manifolds

We use geometric microlocal methods to compute an asymptotic expansion of mean first arrival time for Brownian particles on Riemannian manifolds. This approach provides a robust way to treat this problem, which has thus far been limited to very special geometries. This paper can be seen as the Riemannian 3-manifold version of the planar result of \cite{ammari} and thus enable us to see the full effect of the local extrinsic boundary geometry on the mean arrival time of the Brownian particles. Our approach also connects this question to some of the recent progress on boundary rigidity and integral geometry [23,20].

Partial data inverse problems for the Hodge Laplacian

We prove uniqueness results for a Calderon type inverse problem for the Hodge Laplacian acting on graded forms on certain manifolds in three dimensions. In particular, we show that partial measurements of the relative-to-absolute or absolute-to-relative boundary value maps uniquely determine a zeroth order potential. The method is based on Carleman estimates for the Hodge Laplacian with relative or absolute boundary conditions, and on the construction of complex geometric optics solutions which reduce the Calderon type problem to a tensor tomography problem for 2-tensors. The arguments in this paper allow to establish partial data results for elliptic systems that generalize the scalar results due to Kenig-Sjostrand-Uhlmann.

Stability for a magnetic Schrödinger operator on a Riemann surface with boundary

We consider a magnetic Schrödinger operator $(\nabla^X)^*\nabla^X+q$ on a compact Riemann surface with boundary and prove a $\log\log$-type stability estimate in terms of Cauchy data for the electric potential and magnetic field under the assumption that they satisfy appropriate a priori bounds. We also give a similar stability result for the holonomy of the connection 1-form $X$.

The $L^p$ Carleman estimate and a partial data inverse problem

We construct an explicit Green's function for the conjugated Laplacian $e^{-ω\cdot x/h}Δe^{-ω\cdot x/h}$, which let us control our solutions on roughly half of the boundary. We apply the Green's function to solve a partial data inverse problem for the Schrödinger equation with potential $q \in L^{n/2}$. We also use this Green's function to derive $L^p$ Carleman estimates similar to the ones in Kenig-Ruiz-Sogge \cite{krs}, but for functions with support up to part of the boundary.

Partial Data Inverse Problems for Maxwell Equations via Carleman Estimates

In this article we consider an inverse boundary value problem for the time-harmonic Maxwell equations. We show that the electromagnetic material parameters are determined by boundary measurements where part of the boundary data is measured on a possibly very small set. This is an extension of earlier scalar results of Bukhgeim-Uhlmann and Kenig-Sjöstrand-Uhlmann to the Maxwell system. The main contribution is to show that the Carleman estimate approach to scalar partial data inverse problems introduced in those works can be carried over to the Maxwell system.

Inverse problems and invisibility cloaking for FEM models and resistor networks

In this paper we consider inverse problems for resistor networks and for models obtained via the Finite Element Method (FEM) for the conductivity equation. These correspond to discrete versions of the inverse conductivity problem of Calderón. We characterize FEM models corresponding to a given triangulation of the domain that are equivalent to certain resistor networks, and apply the results to study nonuniqueness of the discrete inverse problem. It turns out that the degree of nonuniqueness for the discrete problem is larger than the one for the partial differential equation. We also study invisibility cloaking for FEM models, and show how an arbitrary body can be surrounded with a layer so that the cloaked body has the same boundary measurements as a given background medium.

Inverse Boundary Problems for Systems in Two Dimensions

We prove identification of coefficients up to gauge by Cauchy data at the boundary for elliptic systems on oriented compact surfaces with boundary or domains of $\mathbb{C}$. In the geometric setting, we fix a Riemann surface with boundary, and consider both a Dirac-type operator plus potential acting on sections of a Clifford bundle and a connection Laplacian plus potential (i.e. Schrödinger Laplacian with external Yang-Mills field) acting on sections of a Hermitian bundle. In either case we show that the Cauchy data determines both the connection and the potential up to a natural gauge transformation: conjugation by an endomorphism of the bundle which is the identity at the boundary. For domains of $\mathbb{C}$, we recover zeroth order terms up to gauge from Cauchy data at the boundary in first order elliptic systems.

Identification of a connection from Cauchy data on a Riemann surface with boundary

We consider a connection $\nabla^X$ on a complex line bundle over a Riemann surface with boundary $M_0$, with connection 1-form $X$. We show that the Cauchy data space of the connection Laplacian (also called magnetic Laplacian) $L:={\nabla^X}^*\nabla^X + q$, with $q$ a complex valued potential, uniquely determines the connection up to gauge isomorphism, and the potential $q$.

Inverse scattering at fixed energy on surfaces with Euclidean ends

On a fixed Riemann surface $(M_0,g_0)$ with $N$ Euclidean ends and genus $g$, we show that, under a topological condition, the scattering matrix $S_V(\la)$ at frequency $\la > 0$ for the operator $Δ+V$ determines the potential $V$ if $V\in C^{1,α}(M_0)\cap e^{-γd(\cdot,z_0)^j}L^\infty(M_0)$ for all $γ>0$ and for some $j\in\{1,2\}$, where $d(z,z_0)$ denotes the distance from $z$ to a fixed point $z_0\in M_0$. The topological condition is given by $N\geq\max(2g+1,2)$ for $j=1$ and by $N\geq g+1$ if $j=2$. In $\rr^2$ this implies that the operator $S_V(\la)$ determines any $C^{1,α}$ potential $V$ such that $V(z)=O(e^{-γ|z|^2})$ for all $γ>0$.
