De-projecting the EFThedron

The space of Wilson coefficients of EFT that can be UV completed into consistent theories was recently shown to be described analytically by a positive geometry, termed the EFThedron. However, this geometry, as well as complementary numerical methods of semi-definite programming, have so far focused on the positivity of the partial wave expansion, which allows bounding only ratios of couplings. In this paper we describe how the unitarity upper bound of the partial waves can be incorporated. This new problem can be formulated in terms of the well known $L$-moment problem, which we generalize and solve from a geometrical perspective. We find the non-projective generalization of the EFThedron has an infinite number of non-linear facets, which in some cases have remarkably simple descriptions. We use these results to derive bounds on single couplings, finding that the leading derivative operators are bounded by unity, when normalized by the cut-off scale and loop factors. For general operators of mass dimension $2k$ we find the upper bound is heavily suppressed at large $k$, with an $1/k$ fall-off.

Into the EFThedron and UV constraints from IR consistency

Recently it was proposed that the theory space of effective field theories with consistent UV completions can be described as a positive geometry, termed the EFThedron. In this paper we demonstrate that at the core, the geometry is given by the convex hull of the product of two moment curves. This makes contact with the well studied bi-variate moment problem, which in various instances has known solutions, generalizing the Hankel matrices of couplings into moment matrices. We are thus able to obtain analytic expressions for bounds, which perfectly match numerical results from semi-definite programing methods. Furthermore, we demonstrate that crossing symmetry in the IR imposes non-trivial constraints on the UV spectrum. In particular, permutation invariance for identical scalar scattering requires that any UV completion beyond the scalar sector must contain arbitrarily high spins, including at least all even spins $\ell\le28$, with the ratio of spinning spectral functions bounded from above, exhibiting large spin suppression. The spinning spectrum must also include at least one state satisfying a bound $m^2_{J}<M^2 \frac{( J^2-12) ( J^4 - 32 J^2 +204)}{8 (150 - 43 J^2 + 2 J^4)}$, where $J^2=\ell(\ell+1)$, and $M^2$ is the mass of the heaviest spin 2 state in the spectrum.

Double Copy in Higher Derivative Operators of Nambu-Goldstone Bosons

We investigate the existence of double copy structure, or the lack thereof, in higher derivative operators for Nambu-Goldstone bosons. At the leading ${\cal O}(p^2)$, tree amplitudes of Nambu-Goldstone bosons in the adjoint representation can be (trivially) expressed as the double copy of itself and the cubic bi-adjoint scalar theory, through the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye bilinear kernel. At the next-to-leading ${\cal O}(p^4)$ there exist four operators in general, among which we identify one operator whose amplitudes exhibit the flavor-kinematics duality and can be written as the double copy of ${\cal O}(p^2)$ Nambu-Goldstone amplitudes and the Yang-Mills+$ϕ^3$ theory, involving both gluons and gauged cubic bi-adjoint scalars. The specific operator turns out to coincide with the scalar ${\cal O}(p^4)$ operator in the so-called extended Dirac-Born-Infeld theory, for which the aforementioned double copy relation holds more generally.

Simple encoding of higher derivative gauge and gravity counterterms

Invoking increasingly higher dimension operators to encode novel UV physics in effective gauge and gravity theories traditionally means working with increasingly more finicky and difficult expressions. We demonstrate that local higher derivative supersymmetric-compatible operators at four-points can be absorbed into simpler higher-derivative corrections to scalar theories, which generate the predictions of Yang-Mills and Gravity operators by suitable replacements of color-weights with color-dual kinematic weights as per Bern-Carrasco-Johansson double-copy. We exploit that Jacobi-satisfying representations can be composed out of other Jacobi-satisfying representations, and show that at four-points only a small number of building blocks are required to generate the predictions of higher-derivative operators. We find that this construction saturates the higher-derivative operators contributing to the four-point supersymmetric open and closed-string tree amplitudes, presenting a novel representation of the four-point supersymmetric open string making this structure manifest, as well as identifying the only four additional gauge-invariant building blocks required to saturate the four-point bosonic open string.

UV consistency conditions for CHY integrands

We extend on-shell bootstrap methods from spacetime amplitudes to the worldsheet objects of the CHY formalism. We find that the integrands corresponding to tree-level non-linear sigma model, Yang-Mills and $(DF)^2$ theory are determined by demanding enhanced UV scaling under BCFW shifts. Back in spacetime, we also find that $(DF)^2$ theory is fixed by gauge invariance/UV scaling and simple locality assumptions.

Gravitons, Bose-symmetry, and Bonus-scaling

Modern on-shell S-matrix methods may dramatically improve our understanding of perturbative quantum gravity, but current foundations of on-shell techniques for General Relativity still rely on off-shell Feynman diagram analysis. Here, we complete the fully on-shell proof of Ref.~\cite{ST} that the recursion relations of Britto, Cachazo, Feng, and Witten (BCFW) apply to General Relativity tree amplitudes. We do so by showing that the surprising requirement of "bonus" $z^{-2}$ scaling under a BCFW shift directly follows from Bose-symmetry. Moreover, we show that amplitudes in generic theories subjected to BCFW deformations of identical particles necessarily scale as $z^{\rm even}$. When applied to the color ordered expansions of Yang-Mills, this directly implies the improved behavior under non-adjacent gluon shifts. Using the same analysis, three-dimensional gravity amplitudes scale as $z^{-4}$, compared to the $z^{-1}$ behavior for conformal Chern-Simons matter theory.

Higher-spin massless S-matrices in four-dimensions

On-shell, analytic S-matrix elements in massless theories are constructed from a finite set of primitive three-point amplitudes, which are fixed by Poincare invariance up to an overall numerical constant. We classify \emph{all} such three-point amplitudes in four-dimensions. Imposing the simplest incarnation of Locality and Unitarity on four-particle amplitudes constructed from these three-particle amplitudes rules out all but an extremely small subset of interactions among higher-spin massless states. Notably, the equivalence principle, and the Weinberg-Witten theorem, are simple corollaries of this principle. Further, no massless states with helicity larger than two may consistently interact with massless gravitons. Chromodynamics, electrodynamics, Yukawa and $ϕ^3$-theories are the only marginal and relevant interactions between massless states. Finally, we show that supersymmetry naturally emerges as a consistency condition on four-particle amplitudes involving spin-3/2 states, which must always interact gravitationally.
