Existence theorem for homogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equation with variable rheology

We look at a homogeneous incompressible fluid with a time and space variable rheology of Bingham type, which is governed by a coupling equation. Such a system is a simplified model for a gas-particle mixture that flows under the influence of gravity. The main application of this kind of model is pyroclastic flows in the context of volcanology. In order to prove long time existence of weak solutions, classical Galerkin approximation method coupled with a priori estimates allows us to partially solve the problem. A difficulty remains with the stress tensor, which must satisfy an implicit constitutive relation. Some numerical simulations of a flow of this type are given in the last section. These numerical experiments highlight the influence of the fluidization phenomenon in the flow.

Mathematical existence results for the Doi-Edwards polymer model

In this paper, we present some mathematical results on the Doi-Edwards model describing the dynamics of flexible polymers in melts and concentrated solutions. This model, developed in the late 1970s, has been used and tested extensively in modeling and simulation of polymer flows. From a mathematical point of view, the Doi-Edwards model consists in a strong coupling between the Navier-Stokes equations and a highly nonlinear constitutive law. The aim of this article is to provide a rigorous proof of the well-posedness of the Doi-Edwards model, namely it has a unique regular solution. We also prove, which is generally much more difficult for flows of viscoelastic type, that the solution is global in time in the two dimensional case, without any restriction on the smallness of the data.

Viscoelastic Flows In A Rough Channel: A Multiscale Analysis

In this paper, we consider viscoelastic flows in a rough domain (with typical roughness patterns of size $ε$ < 1). We present and rigorously justify an asymptotic expansion with respect to $ε$, at any order, based upon the definition of elementary problems: Oldroyd-type problems at the global scale defined on a smoothened domain and boundary-layer corrector problems. The resulting analysis guarantees optimality with respect to the truncation error.

Global existence results for some viscoelastic models with an integral constitutive law

We provide a proof of global regularity of solutions of some models of viscoelastic flow with an integral constitutive law, in the two spatial dimensions and in a periodic domain. Models that are included in these results are classical models for flow memory: for instance some K-BKZ models, the PSM model or the Wagner model. The proof is based on the fact that these models naturally give a $L^\infty$-bound on the stress and that they allow to control the spatial gradient of the stress. The main result does not cover the case of the Oldroyd-B model.

Mathematical analysis of the stationary Oldroyd model with diffusive stress

We present the mathematical analysis of the stationary Oldroyd model with diffusive stress: existence and uniqueness of weak solutions is shown if the source terms are small enough or if the Reynolds and Weissenberg numbers are small enough. Besides, in the corotational model, this condition on the data can be relaxed for the existence result. Finally, strong solutions are obtained with additional regularity on the data.

On a phase field model for solid-liquid phase transitions

A new phase field model is introduced, which can be viewed as nontrivial generalisation of what is known as the Caginalp model. It involves in particular nonlinear diffusion terms. By formal asymptotic analysis, it is shown that in the sharp interface limit it still yields a Stefan-like model with: 1) a (generalized) Gibbs-Thomson relation telling how much the interface temperature differs from the equilibrium temperature when the interface is moving or/and is curved with surface tension; 2) a jump condition for the heat flux, which turns out to depend on the latent heat and on the velocity of the interface with a new, nonlinear term compared to standard models. From the PDE analysis point of view, the initial-boundary value problem is proved to be locally well-posed in time (for smooth data).

Convergence to the Reynolds approximation with a double effect of roughness

We prove that the lubrication approximation is perturbed by a non-regular roughness of the boundary. We show how the flow may be accelerated using adequate rugosity profiles on the bottom. We explicit the possible effects of some abrupt changes in the profile. The limit system is mathematically justified through a variant of the notion of two-scale convergence. Finally, we present some numerical results, illustrating the limit system in the three-dimensional case.
