An Experimental and Theoretical Investigation of the Gas-Phase C(3P) + N2O Reaction. Low Temperature Rate Constants and Astrochemical Implications

The reaction between atomic carbon in its ground electronic state, C(3P), and nitrous oxide, N2O, has been studied below room temperature due to its potential importance for astrochemistry, with both species considered to be present at high abundance levels in a range of interstellar environments. On the experimental side, we measured rate constants for this reaction over the 50-296 K range using a continuous supersonic flow reactor. C(3P) atoms were generated by the pulsed photolysis of carbon tetrabromide at 266 nm and were detected by pulsed laser induced fluorescence at 115.8 nm. Additional measurements allowing the major product channels to be elucidated were also performed. On the theoretical side, statistical rate theory was used to calculate low temperature rate constants. These calculations employed the results of new electronic structure calculations of the 3A" potential energy surface of CNNO and provided a basis to extrapolate the measured rate constants to lower temperatures and pressures. The rate constant was found to increase monotonically as the temperature falls, reaching a value of k(C(3P)+N2O)(50 K) = (7.9 +- 0.8) x 10-11 cm3 s-1 at 50 K. As current astrochemical models do not include the C + N2O reaction, we tested the influence of this process on interstellar N2O and other related species using a gas-grain model of dense interstellar clouds. These simulations predict that N2O abundances decrease significantly at intermediate times (10^3 - 10^5 years) when gas-phase C(3P) abundances are high.

Statistical product distributions for ultracold reactions in external fields

The main limitation of most ultracold chemistry studies to date is the lack of an analysis of reaction products. Here, we discuss the first generally tractable, rigorous theoretical framework for computing statistical product-state distributions for ultracold reactions in external fields. We show that fields have two main effects on the products of a statistical reaction, by: (1) modifying the product energy levels thus potentially reshaping the product distributions; and/or (2) adding or removing product states by changing the reaction exothermicity. By analyzing these effects and the strength of the formalism to distinguish between different reaction mechanisms in benchmark reactions involving $^{40}$K and $^{87}$Rb species, we argue that statistical predictions will help understanding product formation and control, and lead developments to realize the full potential of ultracold chemistry.

Freeze the BCI until the user is ready: a pilot study of a BCI inhibitor

In this paper we introduce the concept of Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) inhibitor, which is meant to standby the BCI until the user is ready, in order to improve the overall performance and usability of the system. BCI inhibitor can be defined as a system that monitors user's state and inhibits BCI interaction until specific requirements (e.g. brain activity pattern, user attention level) are met. In this pilot study, a hybrid BCI is designed and composed of a classic synchronous BCI system based on motor imagery and a BCI inhibitor. The BCI inhibitor initiates the control period of the BCI when requirements in terms of brain activity are reached (i.e. stability in the beta band). Preliminary results with four participants suggest that BCI inhibitor system can improve BCI performance.

Classical photo-dissociation dynamics with Bohr quantization

The standard classical expression of the state-resolved photo-dissociation cross section is not consistent with an efficient Bohr quantization of product internal motions. A new and strictly equivalent expression not suffering from this drawback is proposed. This expression opens the way to more realistic classical simulations of direct polyatomic photo-dissociations in the quantum regime where only a few states are available to the products.
