Black hole solutions in scalar-tensor symmetric teleparallel gravity

Symmetric teleparallel gravity is constructed with a nonzero nonmetricity tensor while both torsion and curvature are vanishing. In this framework, we find exact scalarised spherically symmetric static solutions in scalar-tensor theories built with a nonminimal coupling between the nonmetricity scalar and a scalar field. It turns out that the Bocharova-Bronnikov-Melnikov-Bekenstein solution has a symmetric teleparallel analogue (in addition to the recently found metric teleparallel analogue), while some other of these solutions describe scalarised black hole configurations that are not known in the Riemannian or metric teleparallel scalar-tensor case. To aid the analysis we also derive no-hair theorems for the theory. Since the symmetric teleparallel scalar-tensor models also include $f(Q)$ gravity, we shortly discuss this case and further prove a theorem which says that by imposing that the metric functions are the reciprocal of each other ($g_{rr}=1/g_{tt}$), the $f(Q)$ gravity theory reduces to the symmetric teleparallel equivalent of general relativity (plus a cosmological constant), and the metric takes the (Anti)de-Sitter-Schwarzschild form.

Global portraits of nonminimal inflation

We reconsider the dynamical systems approach to analyze inflationary universe in the Jordan frame models of scalar field nonminimally coupled to curvature. The adopted set of variables allows us to clearly distinguish between different asymptotic states in the phase space, including the kinetic and inflationary regimes. Inflation is realized as a heteroclinic trajectory originating either at infinity from a nonhyperbolic asymptotic de Sitter point or from a regular saddle de Sitter point. We also present a comprehensive picture of possible initial conditions leading to sufficient inflationary expansion and show their extent on the phase diagrams. In addition we comment on the slow roll conditions applicable in the Jordan frame and show how they approximate the leading inflationary "attractor solution". As particular examples we portrait quadratic and quartic potential models and note that increasing the nonminimal coupling diminishes the range of good initial conditions in the quadratic case, but enlarges is in the quartic case.

Global portraits of nonminimal teleparallel inflation

We construct the global phase portraits of inflationary dynamics in teleparallel gravity models with a scalar field nonminimally coupled to torsion scalar. The adopted set of variables can clearly distinguish between different asymptotic states as fixed points, including the kinetic and inflationary regimes. The key role in the description of inflation is played by the heteroclinic orbits which run from the asymptotic saddle points to the late time attractor point and are approximated by nonminimal slow roll conditions. To seek the asymptotic fixed points we outline a heuristic method in terms of the "effective potential" and "effective mass", which can be applied for any nonminimally coupled theories. As particular examples we study positive quadratic nonminimal couplings with quadratic and quartic potentials, and note how the portraits differ qualitatively from the known scalar-curvature counterparts. For quadratic models inflation can only occur at small nonminimal coupling to torsion, as for larger coupling the asymptotic de Sitter saddle point disappears from the physical phase space. Teleparallel models with quartic potentials are not viable for inflation at all, since for small nonminimal coupling the asymptotic saddle point exhibits weaker than exponential expansion, and for larger coupling disappears too.

Plebański-Demiański solutions with dynamical torsion and nonmetricity fields

We construct Plebański-Demiański stationary and axisymmetric solutions with two expanding and double principal null directions in the framework of Metric-Affine gauge theory of gravity. Starting from the new improved form of the metric with vanishing cosmological constant recently achieved by Podolský and Vrátný, we extend this form in the presence of a cosmological constant and derive the conditions under which the physical sources of the torsion and nonmetricity tensors provide dynamical contributions preserving it in Weyl-Cartan geometry. The resulting black hole configurations are characterised by the mass, orbital angular momentum, acceleration, NUT parameter, cosmological constant and electromagnetic charges of the Riemannian sector of the theory, as well as by the spin and dilation charges of the torsion and nonmetricity fields. The former is subject to a constraint representing a decoupling limit with the parameters responsible of axial symmetry, beyond which the geometry of the space-time is expected to be corrected.

Exploring Axial Symmetry in Modified Teleparallel Gravity

Axially symmetric spacetimes play an important role in the relativistic description of rotating astrophysical objects like black holes, stars, etc. In gravitational theories that venture beyond the usual Riemannian geometry by allowing independent connection components, the notion of symmetry concerns, not just the metric, but also the connection. As discovered recently, in teleparallel geometries, axial symmetry can be realised in two branches, while only one of these has a continuous spherically symmetric limit. In the current paper, we consider a very generic $f(T,B,ϕ,X)$ family of teleparallel gravities, whose action depends on the torsion scalar $T$ and the boundary term $B$, as well as a scalar field $ϕ$ with its kinetic term $X$. As the field equations can be decomposed into symmetric and antisymmetric (spin connection) parts, we thoroughly analyse the antisymmetric equations and look for solutions of axial spacetimes which could be used as ansätze to tackle the symmetric part of the field equations. In particular, we find solutions corresponding to a generalisation of the Taub-NUT metric, and the slowly rotating Kerr spacetime. Since this work also concerns a wider issue of how to determine the spin connection in teleparallel gravity, we also show that the method of "turning off gravity" proposed in the literature, does not always produce a solution to the antisymmetric equations.

Equivalence of inflationary models between the metric and Palatini formulation of scalar-tensor theories

With a scalar field non-minimally coupled to curvature, the underlying geometry and variational principle of gravity - metric or Palatini - becomes important and makes a difference, as the field dynamics and observational predictions generally depend on this choice. In the present paper we describe a classification principle which encompasses both metric and Palatini models of inflation, employing the fact that inflationary observables can be neatly expressed in terms of certain quantities which remain invariant under conformal transformations and scalar field redefinitions. This allows us to elucidate the specific conditions when a model yields equivalent phenomenology in the metric and Palatini formalisms, and also to outline a method how to systematically construct different models in both formulations that produce the same observables.

Scalar-tensor cosmologies with dust matter in the general relativity limit

We consider flat Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker cosmological models in the framework of general scalar-tensor theories of gravity with arbitrary coupling functions, set in the Jordan frame, in the cosmological epoch when the energy density of the ordinary dust matter dominates over the energy density of the scalar potential. Motivated by cosmological observations, we apply an approximation scheme in the regime close to the so-called limit of general relativity. The ensuing nonlinear approximate equations for the scalar field and the Hubble parameter can be solved analytically in cosmological time. This allows us to distinguish the theories with solutions that asymptotically converge to general relativity and draw some implications about the cosmological dynamics near this limit.

Potential dominated scalar-tensor cosmologies in the general relativity limit: phase space view

We consider the potential dominated era of Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker flat cosmological models in the framework of general Jordan frame scalar-tensor theories of gravity with arbitrary coupling functions, and focus upon the phase space of the scalar field. To study the regime suggested by the local weak field tests (i.e. close to the so-called limit of general relativity) we propose a nonlinear approximation scheme, solve for the phase trajectories, and provide a complete classification of possible phase portraits. We argue that the topology of trajectories in the nonlinear approximation is representative of those of the full system, and thus can tell for which scalar-tensor models general relativity functions as an attractor.

Scalar-tensor cosmologies with a potential in the general relativity limit: time evolution

We consider Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker flat cosmological models in the framework of general Jordan frame scalar-tensor theories of gravity with arbitrary coupling function and potential. For the era when the cosmological energy density of the scalar potential dominates over the energy density of ordinary matter, we use a nonlinear approximation of the decoupled scalar field equation for the regime close to the so-called limit of general relativity where the local weak field constraints are satisfied. We give the solutions in cosmological time with a particular attention to the classes of models asymptotically approaching general relativity. The latter can be subsumed under two types: (i) exponential convergence, and (ii) damped oscillations around general relativity. As an illustration we present an example of oscillating dark energy.
