Invasion into remnant instability: a case study of front dynamics

We study the invasion of an unstable state by a propagating front in a peculiar but generic situation where the invasion process exhibits a remnant instability. Here, remnant instability refers to the fact that the spatially constant invaded state is linearly unstable in any exponentially weighted space in a frame moving with the linear invasion speed. Our main result is the nonlinear asymptotic stability of the selected invasion front for a prototypical model coupling spatio-temporal oscillations and monotone dynamics. We establish stability through a decomposition of the perturbation into two pieces: one that is bounded in the weighted space and a second that is unbounded in the weighted space but which converges uniformly to zero in the unweighted space at an exponential rate. Interestingly, long-time numerical simulations reveal an apparent instability in some cases. We exhibit how this instability is caused by round-off errors that introduce linear resonant coupling of otherwise non-resonant linear modes, and we determine the accelerated invasion speed.

Inhomogeneous domain walls in spintronic nanowires

In case of a spin-polarized current, the magnetization dynamics in nanowires are governed by the classical Landau-Lifschitz equation with Gilbert damping term, augmented by a typically non-variational Slonczewski term. Taking axial symmetry into account, we study the existence of domain wall type coherent structure solutions, with focus on one space dimension and spin-polarization, but our results also apply to vanishing spin-torque term. Using methods from bifurcation theory for arbitrary constant applied fields, we prove the existence of domain walls with non-trivial azimuthal profile, referred to as inhomogeneous. We present an apparently new type of domain wall, referred to as non-flat, whose approach of the axial magnetization has a certain oscillatory character. Additionally, we present the leading order mechanism for the parameter selection of flat and non-flat inhomogeneous domain walls for an applied field below a threshold, which depends on anisotropy, damping, and spin-transfer. Moreover, numerical continuation results of all these domain wall solutions are presented.

Cost-Optimal Operation of Energy Storage Units: Benefits of a Problem-Specific Approach

The integration of large shares of electricity produced by non-dispatchable Renewable Energy Sources (RES) leads to an increasingly volatile energy generation side, with temporary local overproduction. The application of energy storage units has the potential to use this excess electricity from RES efficiently and to prevent curtailment. The objective of this work is to calculate cost-optimal charging strategies for energy storage units used as buffers. For this purpose, a new mathematical optimization method is presented that is applicable to general storage-related problems. Due to a tremendous gain in efficiency of this method compared with standard solvers and proven optimality, calculations of complex problems as well as a high-resolution sensitivity analysis of multiple system combinations are feasible within a very short time. As an example technology, Power-to-Heat converters used in combination with thermal storage units are investigated in detail and optimal system configurations, including storage units with and without energy losses, are calculated and evaluated. The benefits of a problem-specific approach are demonstrated by the mathematical simplicity of our approach as well as the general applicability of the proposed method.

Optimal combination of energy storages for prospective power supply systems based on Renewable Energy Sources

Prospective power supply systems based on Renewable Energy Sources require measures to balance power generation and load at all times. The utilisation of storage devices and backup power plants is widely suggested for this purpose, whereas the best combination is still to be found. In this work, we present a modelling approach to systematically study scenarios of future power supply systems with a high share of electricity originating from wind and solar resources. By considering backup as a subordinate source of electricity with energy-only costs, the approach is independent of the actual full-load hours of the backup power plants. Applying the approach to multi-year meteorological data for Germany, cost-optimised combinations of storage devices and backup power are identified. We find that even in scenarios with significant excess generation capacities there is a need for storage devices or backup power plants with discharging power on the same order as the average load to balance the system at all times. Furthermore, these capacities seem to be required in some years of the multi-year period only. Our results imply that the societal need of having electricity available at all times can likely be satisfied by installing over-capacities only, whereas a balance has to be found between installing additional backup or storage or generation capacities.
