The homotopy sequence for regular singular stratified bundles

A separable, proper morphism of varieties with geometrically connected fibers induces a homotopy exact sequence relating the étale fundamental groups of source, target and fiber. Extending work of dos Santos, we prove the existence of an analogous homotopy exact sequence for fundamental group schemes classifying regular singular stratified bundles, under the additional assumption that the morphism in question can be (partially) compactified to a log smooth morphism.

Wild ramification of nilpotent coverings and coverings of bounded degree

A finite étale map between irreducible, normal varieties is called tame, if it is tamely ramified with respect to all partial compactifications whose boundary is the support of a strict normal crossings divisor. We prove that if the Galois group of a Galois covering contains a normal nilpotent subgroup of index bounded by a constant N, then the covering is tame if and only if it is tamely ramified with respect to a single distinguished partial compactification only depending on N. The main tools used in the proof are Temkin's local purely inseparable uniformization and a Lefschetz type theorem due to Drinfeld.

Lefschetz theorems for tamely ramified coverings

As is well known, the Lefschetz theorems for the étale fundamental group of SGA1 do not hold. We fill a small gap in the literature showing they do for tame coverings. Let $X$ be a regular projective variety over a field $k$, and let $D\hookrightarrow X$ be a strict normal crossings divisor. Then, if $Y$ is an ample regular hyperplane intersecting $D$ transversally, the restriction functor from tame étale coverings of $X\setminus D$ to those of $Y\setminus D\cap Y$ is an equivalence if dimension $X \ge 3$, and fully faithful if dimension $X=2$. The method is dictated by Grothendieck-Murre ("The tame fundamental group of a formal neighbourhood of a divisor with normal crossings on a scheme", Springer LNM 208). The authors showed that one can lift tame coverings from $Y\setminus D\cap Y$ to the complement of $D\cap Y$ in the formal completion of $X$ along $Y$. One has then to further lift to $X\setminus D$.

Local-to-global extensions of D-modules in positive characteristic

In "On the calculation of some differential Galois groups" (Invent. Math. 87 (1987), no. 1), Katz defines the notion of a special flat connection on the complex affine line minus the origin, and he shows that the functor which restricts a flat connection to the punctured disc around the point at infinity gives rise to an equivalence between the category of special flat connections and the category of differential modules on the field of Laurent series over the complex numbers. In this article, we prove the corresponding statement over an algebraically closed field k of positive characteristic. The role of flat connections is played by vector bundles carrying an action of the (full) ring of differential operators. We call such objects stratified bundles. The formal local variant on the field of Laurent series k((t)) is called iterated differential module. We define the notion of a special stratified bundle on the affine line over k minus the origin, and show that restriction to the punctured disc around the point at infinity induces an equivalence between the category of special stratified bundles and iterated differential modules. This extends one of the main results of "Local-to-global extensions of representations of fundamental groups" (N. Katz, Ann. Inst. Fourier (Grenoble) 36 (1986), no. 4), and has several interesting consequences which extend well-known statements about étale fundamental groups to higher dimensional fundamental groups.

Evidence for a generalization of Gieseker's conjecture on stratified bundles in positive characteristic

Let X be a smooth, connected, projective variety over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. In "Flat vector bundles and the fundamental group in non-zero characteristics" (Ann. Scuola Norm. Sup. Pisa Cl. Sci. (4) 2 (1975)), Gieseker conjectured that every stratified bundle (i.e. every O-coherent D-module) on X is trivial, if and only if the étale fundamental group of X is trivial. This was proven by Esnault-Mehta in "Simply connected projective manifolds in characteristic p> 0 have no nontrivial stratified bundles" (Invent. Math. 181 (2010)). Building on the classical situation over the complex numbers, we present and motivate a generalization of Gieseker's conjecture using the notion of regular singular stratified bundles developed in the author's thesis and arXiv:1210.5077. In the main part of this article we establish some important special cases of this generalization; most notably we prove that for not necessarily proper X, the vanishing of the tame fundamental group of X implies that there are no nontrivial regular singular stratified bundles with abelian monodromy.

Regular singular stratified bundles and tame ramification

Let X be a smooth variety over an algebraically closed field k of positive characteristic. We define and study a general notion of regular singularities for stratified bundles (i.e. O_X-coherent D_X-modules) on X without relying on resolution of singularities. The main result is that the category of regular singular stratified bundles with finite monodromy is equivalent to the category of continuous representations of the tame fundamental group on finite dimensional k-vector spaces. As a corollary we obtain that a stratified bundle with finite monodromy is regular singular if and only if it is regular singular along all curves mapping to X.

The Picard Group of Simply Connected Regular Varieties and Stratified Line Bundles

We prove that the Picard group of a regular simply connected variety over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic is finitely generated. The main difficulty to overcome is the unavailability of resolution of singularities. From this we deduce that in positive characteristic there exist no nontrivial stratified line bundles on such a variety, and we present a complex analog.
