Quantum Flywheel

A quantum flywheel is studied with the purpose of storing useful work in quantum levels, while additional power is extracted continuously from the device. The flywheel gains its energy form a quantum heat engine. Generally, when a work repository is quantized the work exchange with the engine is accompanied with heat exchange, which may degrade the charging efficiency. In the particular realization of a quantum harmonic oscillator work repository, quantum and thermal fluctuations dominates the dynamics. Quantum monitoring and feedback control are applied to the flywheel, as it is shown to be an essential part of stabilizing and regulating its state of operation, and bringing the system to a steady state. A particular balance between information gained by measuring the system and the information fed back to the system is found to maximize the charging efficiency. The dynamics of the flywheel are described by a stochastic master equation that accounts for the engine, the external driving, the measurement, and the feedback operations.

Quantum linear Boltzmann equation with finite intercollision time

Inconsistencies are pointed out in the usual quantum versions of the classical linear Boltzmann equation constructed for a quantized test particle in a gas. These are related to the incorrect formal treatment of momentum decoherence. We prove that ideal collisions would result in complete momentum decoherence, the persistence of coherence is only due to the finite intercollision time. A corresponding novel quantum linear Boltzmann equation is proposed.

Test of weak measurement on a two- or three-qubit computer

Current quantum computer technology is sufficient to realize weak measurements and the corresponding concept of weak values. We demonstrate how the weak value anomaly can be tested, along with consistency and simultaneity of weak values, using only discrete degrees of freedom. All you need is a quantum computer with two--or better, three--qubits. We also give an interpretation of the weak value as an effective field strength in a postselected spin measurement.

Simple theory of the measured current through quantum dots

A simple theory of the detected current I(t) flowing through charge qubits -- quantum dots -- is proposed in terms of standard continuous measurement theory. Applied to a double dot, our formalism easily confirms previous results on quantum Zeno effect, driven by growing ammeter performance gamma. Due to the transparent formalism, we can calculate the exact fluctuation spectrum S(omega) of the detected current, containing a significant Lorentzian peak near the Rabi frequency of the double dot.

Intrinsic time-uncertainties and decoherence: comparison of 4 models

Four models of energy decoherence are discussed from the common perspective of intrinsic time-uncertainty. The four authors -- Milburn, Adler, Penrose, and myself -- have four different approaches. The present work concentrates on their common divisors at the level of the proposed equations rather than at the level of the interpretations. General relationships between time-uncertainty and energy-decoherence are presented in both global and local sense. Global and local master equations are derived. (The local concept is favored.)

Probability of intrinsic time-arrow from information loss

Time-arrow $s=+/-$, intrinsic to a concrete physical system, is associated with the direction of information loss $ΔI$ displayed by the random evolution of the given system. When the information loss tends to zero the intrinsic time-arrow becomes uncertain. We propose the heuristic relationship $1/[1+exp(-sΔI)]$ for the probability of the intrinsic time-arrow. The main parts of the present work are trying to confirm this heuristic equation. The probability of intrinsic time arrow is defined by Bayesian inference from the observed random process. From irreversible thermodynamic systems, the proposed heuristic probabilities follow via the Gallavotti-Cohen relations between time-reversed random processes. In order to explore the underlying microscopic mechanism, a trivial microscopic process is analyzed and an obvious discrepancy is identified. It can be resolved by quantum theory. The corresponding trivial quantum process will exactly confirm the proposed heuristic time-arrow probability.

Exact positivity of the Wigner and P-functions of a Markovian open system

We discuss the case of a Markovian master equation for an open system, as it is frequently found from environmental decoherence. We prove two theorems for the evolution of the quantum state. The first one states that for a generic initial state the corresponding Wigner function becomes strictly positive after a finite time has elapsed. The second one states that also the P-function becomes exactly positive after a decoherence time of the same order. Therefore the density matrix becomes exactly decomposable into a mixture of Gaussian pointer states.

Shannon information increase and rescue in friction

On the standard microscopic model of friction we confirm the common belief that the irreversible entropy production originates from the increase of Shannon information. We reveal that the reversible microscopic dynamics would continuously violate the Gibbsian interchangeability of molecules. The spontaneous restoration of interchangeability constitutes the mechanism of irreversibility. This is the main suggestion of the Letter. We also point out that the irreversible entropy can partially be rescued if the size of the medium is finite. The rescueable entropy is found to be proportional to the square of the Fisher statistical (also called thermodynamic) distance.

Single qubit estimation from repeated unsharp measurements

When estimating an unknown single pure qubit state, the optimum fidelity is 2/3. As it is well known, the value 2/3 can be achieved in one step, by a single ideal measurement of the polarization along a random direction. I analyze the opposite strategy which is the long sequence of unsharp polarization measurements. The evolution of the qubit under the influence of repeated measurements is quite complicated in the general case. Fortunately, in a certain limit of very unsharp measurements the qubit will obey simple stochastic evolution equations known for long under the name of time-continuous measurement theory. I discuss how the outcomes of the very unsharp measurements will asymptotically contribute to our knowledge of the original qubit. It is reassuring that the fidelity will achieve the optimum 2/3 for long enough sequences of the unsharp measurements.
