Amplitude analysis and branching fraction measurement of J/ψ→ΛΣˉ0η+c.cJ/ψ\to Λ\barΣ^0η+\mathrm{c.c}

Based on a sample of (10087±44)×106(10087\pm44)\times10^{6} J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector, a partial-wave analysis of J/ψ→ΛΣˉ0η+c.c J/ψ\to Λ\bar{ Σ}^0η+\mathrm{c.c} is performed for the first time. The dominant contributions are found to be excited ΛΛ states with JP=1/2−J^P=1/2^- and JP=1/2+J^P=1/2^+ in the ηΛηΛ mass spectra. The measured masses and widths are M=1668.8±3.1±21.2M=1668.8\pm3.1\pm21.2 MeV/c2c^2 and Γ=52.7±4.2±17.8Γ=52.7\pm4.2\pm17.8 MeV for the Λ(1670)Λ(1670), and M=1881.5±16.5±20.3M=1881.5\pm16.5\pm20.3 MeV/c2c^2 and Γ=82.4±18.2±8.9Γ=82.4\pm18.2\pm8.9 MeV for the Λ(1810)Λ(1810), respectively. The branching fraction is determined to be B(J/ψ→ΛΣˉ0η+c.c) \mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to Λ\bar{ Σ}^0η+\mathrm{c.c}) = (3.44±0.11±0.13)×10−5(3.44 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.13) \times 10^{-5}. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic.

Cross section measurement of e+e−→π0π0ψ(3686)e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{0}π^{0}ψ(3686) from s=\sqrt{s}= 4.008 GeV to 4.951 GeV

Using data samples with a total integrated luminosity of 22.1 fb−122.1~\rm fb^{-1} at center-of-mass energies between 4.008 and 4.951~GeV collected with the BESIII detector, the cross sections of e+e−→π0π0ψ(3686)e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{0}π^{0}ψ(3686) process are measured. The obtained cross sections are found to be approximately one-half of those of e+e−→π+π−ψ(3686)e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}ψ(3686), consistent with the isospin symmetry expectation. A coherent fit to the dressed cross sections is performed, with the Y(4230)Y(4230)~parameters fixed at the values measured in e+e−→π+π−ψ(3686)e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}ψ(3686). The significances of the Y(4390)Y(4390) and Y(4660)Y(4660) are both larger than 5σ5σ, and their masses and widths are consistent with the previous measurement in the e+e−→π+π−ψ(3686)e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}ψ(3686) process.

First Measurement of the Absolute Branching Fraction of ηc→γγη_c \to γγ

We apply a tag-and-probe method to precisely measure the absolute branching fraction of the decay ηc→γγη_c \to γγ with the BESIII experiment at BEPCII. Starting with a large initial sample of 2712.4±14.32712.4\pm 14.3 million ψ(3686)ψ(3686) events, a sample of 0.16 million ηcη_c events are tagged via the golden channel ψ(3686)→π0hcψ(3686)\to π^0 h_c, hc→γηch_c\to γη_c, effectively avoiding interference effects. The absolute branching fraction of ηc→γγη_c \to γγ is measured for the first time to be B(ηc→γγ)=(2.45±0.48stat.±0.09syst.)×10−4\mathcal{B}(η_c \to γγ) = (2.45 \pm 0.48_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.09_{\rm syst.}) \times 10^{-4}. Using the world average value of the total width of the ηcη_c, the partial decay width of ηc→γγη_c \to γγ is calculated to be Γ(ηc→γγ)=(7.48±1.48stat.±0.30syst.) keVΓ(η_c \to γγ) = (7.48 \pm 1.48_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.30_{\rm syst.})~{\rm keV}.

First Observation of D0(+)→Kˉωe+νeD^{0(+)}\to \bar Kωe^+ν_e and Determination of the Branching Fraction of Kˉ1(1270)→Kˉω\bar K_1(1270)\to \bar K ω

Using 20.3~fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773~GeV with the BESIII detector, we report the first observation of the semileptonic decays D0→K−ωe+νeD^0\to K^-ωe^+ν_e and D+→KS0ωe+νeD^+\to K_S^0ωe^+ν_e with significances of 8.0σ8.0σ and 5.8σ5.8σ, respectively, including systematic uncertainties. Their decay branching fractions are measured to be B(D0→K−ωe+νe)=(9.3−1.9+2.1±0.7)×10−5{\cal B}(D^0\to K^-ωe^+ν_e)=(9.3^{+2.1}_{-1.9}\pm 0.7)\times10^{-5} and B(D+→KS0ωe+νe)=(6.6−1.8+2.0±0.6)×10−5{\cal B}(D^+\to K_S^0ωe^+ν_e)=(6.6^{+2.0}_{-1.8}\pm 0.6)\times10^{-5}. Combining with the latest measurements of D0(+)→K−π+π−(0)e+νeD^{0(+)}\to K^-π^+π^{-(0)} e^+ν_e and assuming Kˉ1(1270)\bar{K}_1(1270) to be the sole mediating resonance in all processes, the branching ratios are determined to be Γ(K1(1270)−→K−π+π−)Γ(K1(1270)−→K−ω)=3.4−0.7+0.8±0.3\frac{Γ(K_1(1270)^-\to K^-π^+π^-)}{Γ(K_1(1270)^-\to K^-ω)} = 3.4^{+0.8}_{-0.7} \pm 0.3 and Γ(Kˉ1(1270)0→K−π+π0)Γ(Kˉ1(1270)0→Kˉ0ω)=9.6−2.7+3.0±0.8\frac{Γ(\bar{K}_1(1270)^0\to K^-π^+π^0)}{Γ(\bar{K}_1(1270)^0\to \bar{K}^0ω)} = 9.6^{+3.0}_{-2.7} \pm 0.8. The combined branching fraction is determined to be B(Kˉ1(1270)→Kˉω)=(7.5±1.3±0.5)%\mathcal B(\bar{K}_1(1270)\to \bar{K}ω) = (7.5\pm 1.3 \pm 0.5)\%, which is the most precise measurement from a collider experiment. The first uncertainties are statistical, and the second are systematic.

Light Dark Matter Search with 7.8 Tonne-Year of Ionization-Only Data in XENONnT

We report on a blinded search for dark matter (DM) using ionization-only (S2-only) signals in XENONnT with a total exposure of 7.83tonne×year7.83\mathrm{tonne}\times\mathrm{year} over 579 days in three science runs. Dedicated background suppression techniques and the first complete S2-only background model in XENONnT provide sensitivity to nuclear recoils of [0.5, 5.0] keVnr\mathrm{keV_\mathrm{nr}} and electronic recoils of [0.04, 0.7] keVee\mathrm{keV_\mathrm{ee}}. No significant excess over the expected background is observed, and we set 90\% confidence level upper limits on spin-independent DM--nucleon and spin-dependent DM--neutron scattering for DM masses between 3 and 8 GeV/c2\mathrm{GeV}/c^2, as well as on DM--electron scattering, axion-like particles, and dark photons, improving on previous constraints. For spin-independent DM--nucleon scattering, we exclude cross sections above 6.0×10−456.0\times10^{-45} cm2^2 at a DM mass of 5 GeV/c2\mathrm{GeV}/c^2, pushing the XENONnT sensitivity closer to the region where coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEνNS\text{CE}ν\text{NS}) becomes an irreducible background.

Measurements of the absolute branching fractions of the Λc+Λ_{c}^{+} hadronic decays

Based on 4.5 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- collision data collected at center-of-mass energies between 4599.53 MeV and 4698.82 MeV with the BESIII detector, the absolute branching fractions of twelve Λc+Λ_{c}^{+} hadronic decay modes are measured with a double-tag technique. A global least-square fit is implemented simultaneously among different decay modes at different energy points. This paper gives the most precise results on the branching fractions of different decay modes to date, with precision improved by a factor of 2 to 3. Among them, the branching fraction of Λc+→pK−π+Λ_{c}^{+}\to pK^{-}π^+ is determined to be (6.61±0.11±0.12)%(6.61\pm0.11\pm0.12)\%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. In addition, the e+e−→Λc+Λˉc−e^+e^-\toΛ_c^+\barΛ_c^- Born cross sections and the effective form factors (∣Geff∣|G_{\rm eff}|) at different energy points have been determined with the highest precision to date.

Search for a dark baryon in the Ξ−→π−+invisibleΞ^-\rightarrowπ^-+{\rm invisible} decay

A search for a dark baryon is performed for the first time in the two-body decay Ξ−→π−+invisibleΞ^-\rightarrowπ^-+{\rm invisible} using (10.087±0.044)×109(10.087\pm0.044)\times10^{9} J/ψJ/ψ events collected at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=3.097\,\mbox{GeV}$ with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. No significant signal is observed, and the 90% (95%) confidence level upper limits on the branching fraction B(Ξ−→π−+invisible)B(Ξ^-\rightarrowπ^-+{\rm invisible}) are determined to be 4.2×10−54.2\times10^{-5} (5.2×10−55.2\times10^{-5}), 6.9×10−56.9\times10^{-5} (8.4×10−58.4\times10^{-5}), 6.5×10−46.5\times10^{-4} (7.6×10−47.6\times10^{-4}), 1.1×10−41.1\times10^{-4} (1.3×10−41.3\times10^{-4}) and 4.5×10−54.5\times10^{-5} (5.5×10−55.5\times10^{-5}), under the dark baryon mass hypotheses of 1.07$\,\mbox{GeV}/c^2$, 1.10$\,\mbox{GeV}/c^2$, mΛm_Λ (1.116$\,\mbox{GeV}/c^2$), 1.13$\,\mbox{GeV}/c^2$, and 1.16$\,\mbox{GeV}/c^2$, respectively. The constraints obtained on the Wilson coefficients Cus,sLC_{u s, s}^L and Cus,sRC_{u s, s}^R are more stringent than the previous limits derived from the LHC searches for the colored mediators.

The branching fraction ratio of Λc+→Σ+ηΛ_{c}^+ \rightarrow Σ^+ η relative to Λc+→Σ+π0Λ_{c}^+ \rightarrow Σ^+ π^0 is determined to be 0.305±0.046stat.±0.007syst.0.305 \pm 0.046_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.007_{\rm syst.}, and that of Λc+→Σ+η′Λ_{c}^+ \rightarrow Σ^+ η' relative to Λc+→Σ+ωΛ_{c}^+ \rightarrow Σ^+ ω is 0.336±0.094stat.±0.037syst.0.336 \pm 0.094_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.037_{\rm syst.}. The ratio of B(Λc+→Σ+η′)B(Λc+→Σ+η)\frac{\mathcal{B}\left(Λ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow Σ^{+} η'\right)}{\mathcal{B}\left(Λ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow Σ^{+} η\right)} is determined to be 1.73±0.22stat.±0.16syst.1.73 \pm 0.22_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.16_{\rm syst.}. These results enrich our knowledge of charmed baryon decays.

Investigation of the ΔI=1/2ΔI = 1/2 rule and test of CP violation through the measurement of decay asymmetry parameters in Ξ−Ξ^- decays

Using (10087±44)×106(10087\pm44)\times 10^{6} J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector, numerous Ξ−Ξ^- and ΛΛ decay asymmetry parameters are simultaneously determined from the process J/ψ→Ξ−Ξˉ+→Λ(pπ−)π−Λˉ(nˉπ0)π+J/ψ\to Ξ^- \barΞ^+ \to Λ(pπ^-) π^- \barΛ(\bar{n} π^0) π^+ and its charge-conjugate channel. The precisions of α0α_0 for Λ→nπ0Λ\to nπ^0 and αˉ0\barα_0 for Λˉ→nˉπ0\barΛ \to \bar{n}π^0 compared to world averages are improved by factors of 4 and 1.7, respectively. The ratio of decay asymmetry parameters of Λ→nπ0Λ\to nπ^0 to that of Λ→pπ−Λ\to pπ^-, ⟨α0⟩/⟨αΛ−⟩\langle α_0 \rangle/ \langle α_{Λ-} \rangle , is determined to be 0.873±0.012−0.010+0.011 0.873 \pm 0.012^{+0.011}_{-0.010}, where the first and the second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The ratio is smaller than unity more than 5σ5σ, which signifies the existence of the ΔI=3/2ΔI = 3/2 transition in ΛΛ for the first time. Beside, we test for CP violation in Ξ−→Λπ−Ξ^- \to Λπ^- and in Λ→nπ0Λ\to n π^{0} with the best precision to date.

Search for hidden-charm tetraquark with strangeness in e+e−→K+Ds∗−D∗0+c.c.e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow K^+ D_{s}^{*-} D^{*0}+c.c.

We report a search for a heavier partner of the recently observed Zcs(3985)−Z_{cs}(3985)^{-} state, denoted as Zcs′−Z_{cs}^{\prime -}, in the process e+e−→K+Ds∗−D∗0+c.c.e^{+} e^{-}\rightarrow K^{+}D_{s}^{*-}D^{* 0}+c.c., based on e+e−e^+e^- collision data collected at the center-of-mass energies of s=4.661\sqrt{s}=4.661, 4.682 and 4.699 GeV with the BESIII detector. The Zcs′−Z_{cs}^{\prime -} is of interest as it is expected to be a candidate for a hidden-charm and open-strange tetraquark. A partial-reconstruction technique is used to isolate K+K^+ recoil-mass spectra, which are probed for a potential contribution from Zcs′−→Ds∗−D∗0Z_{cs}^{\prime -}\to D_{s}^{*-}D^{* 0} (c.c.c.c.). We find an excess of Zcs′−→Ds∗−D∗0Z_{cs}^{\prime -}\rightarrow D_{s}^{*-}D^{*0} (c.c.c.c.) candidates with a significance of 2.1σ2.1σ, after considering systematic uncertainties, at a mass of (4123.5±0.7stat.±4.7syst.) MeV/c2(4123.5\pm0.7_\mathrm{stat.}\pm4.7_\mathrm{syst.})\ \mathrm{MeV}/c^{2}. As the data set is limited in size, the upper limits are evaluated at the 90\% confidence level on the product of the Born cross sections (σBornσ^{\mathrm{Born}}) and the branching fraction (B\mathcal{B}) of Zcs′−→Ds∗−D∗0Z_{cs}^{\prime-}\rightarrow D_{s}^{*-}D^{* 0}, under different assumptions of the Zcs′−Z_{cs}^{\prime -} mass from 4.120 to 4.140 MeV and of the width from 10 to 50 MeV at the three center-of-mass energies. The upper limits of σBorn⋅Bσ^{\rm Born}\cdot\mathcal{B} are found to be at the level of O(1)\mathcal{O}(1) pb at each energy. Larger data samples are needed to confirm the Zcs′−Z_{cs}^{\prime -} state and clarify its nature in the coming years.

Amplitude analysis and branching fraction measurement of the decay Ds+→K+π+π−D_{s}^{+} \to K^+π^+π^-

Using 6.326.32 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collision data collected at the center-of-mass energies between 4.178 and 4.226 GeV with the BESIII detector, we perform an amplitude analysis of the decay Ds+→K+π+π−D^+_s \to K^+π^+π^- and determine the amplitudes of the various intermediate states. The branching fractions of the dominant intermediate processes Ds+→K+ρ0,ρ0→π+π−D_{s}^{+} \to K^+ρ^0, ρ^0 \to π^+π^- and Ds+→K∗(892)0π+,K∗(892)0→K+π−D_{s}^{+} \to K^*(892)^0π^+, K^*(892)^0 \to K^+π^- are determined to be (1.96±0.19stat.±0.23syst.)×10−3(1.96\pm0.19_{\rm stat.}\pm0.23_{\rm syst.})\times 10^{-3} and (1.85±0.12stat.±0.13syst.)×10−3(1.85\pm0.12_{\rm stat.}\pm0.13_{\rm syst.})\times 10^{-3}, respectively. Application and modeling of an online distillation method to reduce krypton and argon in XENON1T

A novel online distillation technique was developed for the XENON1T dark matter experiment to reduce intrinsic background components more volatile than xenon, such as krypton or argon, while the detector was operating. The method is based on a continuous purification of the gaseous volume of the detector system using the XENON1T cryogenic distillation column. A krypton-in-xenon concentration of (360±60)(360 \pm 60) ppq was achieved. It is the lowest concentration measured in the fiducial volume of an operating dark matter detector to date. A model was developed and fit to the data to describe the krypton evolution in the liquid and gas volumes of the detector system for several operation modes over the time span of 550 days, including the commissioning and science runs of XENON1T. The online distillation was also successfully applied to remove Ar-37 after its injection for a low energy calibration in XENON1T. This makes the usage of Ar-37 as a regular calibration source possible in the future. The online distillation can be applied to next-generation experiments to remove krypton prior to, or during, any science run. The model developed here allows further optimization of the distillation strategy for future large scale detectors.

Cross section measurements of the processes e+e−→ωπ0e^+e^- \rightarrow ωπ^{0} and ωηωη at center-of-mass energies between 3.773 and 4.701 GeV

The Λc+→pK−e+νeΛ_c^+\rightarrow pK^-e^+ν_e decay is observed with a significance of 8.2σ8.2σ and the branching fraction is measured to be B(Λc+→pK−e+νe)=(0.88±0.17stat.±0.07syst.)×10−3\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\rightarrow pK^- e^+ν_e)=(0.88\pm0.17_{\rm stat.}\pm0.07_{\rm syst.})\times 10^{-3}. We also report evidence of Λc+→Λ(1520)e+νeΛ_c^+\rightarrow Λ(1520)e^+ν_e and Λc+→Λ(1405)e+νeΛ_c^+\rightarrow Λ(1405)e^+ν_e with significances of 3.3σ3.3σ and 3.2σ3.2σ, respectively, and measure B(Λc+→Λ(1520)e+νe)=(1.02±0.52stat.±0.11syst.)×10−3\mathcal B(Λ^+_c\rightarrow Λ(1520)e^+ν_e)=(1.02\pm0.52_{\rm stat.}\pm0.11_{\rm syst.})\times10^{-3} and B(Λc+→Λ(1405)[→pK−]e+νe)=(0.42±0.19stat.±0.04syst.)×10−3\mathcal B(Λ^+_c\rightarrow Λ(1405)[\rightarrow pK^-]e^+ν_e)=(0.42\pm0.19_{\rm stat.}\pm0.04_{\rm syst.})\times10^{-3}. Combining these with the inclusive semileptonic Λc+Λ_c^+ branching fraction measured by BESIII, the relative fraction is determined to be [B(Λc+→pK−e+νe)/B(Λc+→Xe+νe)]=(2.1±0.4stat.±0.2syst.)%[\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\rightarrow pK^-e^+ν_e)/\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\rightarrow X e^+ν_e)]=(2.1\pm0.4_{\rm stat.}\pm0.2_{\rm syst.})\%, which provides a clear confirmation that semileptonic Λc+Λ_c^+ decays are not saturated by the Λℓ+νℓΛ\ell^+ν_{\ell} final state.

Measurement of e+e−→K+K−π0e^{+}e^{-} \to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0} cross section and observation of a resonant structure

Based on e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collision data collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at center-of-mass energies from 2.000 to 3.080 GeV, a partial-wave analysis is performed for the process e+e−→K+K−π0e^{+}e^{-} \to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}. The Born cross section of the process e+e−→K+K−π0e^{+}e^{-} \to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0} and its subprocesses e+e−→ϕπ0e^{+}e^{-} \to ϕπ^{0}, K∗(892)KK^{*}(892)K and K2∗(1430)KK^{*}_{2}(1430)K are measured. The results for e+e−→K+K−π0e^{+}e^{-} \to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0} and ϕπ0ϕπ^{0} are consistent with the BaBar measurements and with improved precision. By analyzing the cross section, of the subprocesses e+e−→e^{+}e^{-} \to K∗(892)KK^{*}(892)K and K2∗(1430)KK^{*}_{2}(1430)K, a structure with mass MRM_R = (2208 ±\pm 19 ±\pm 24) MeV/c2c^{2} and width ΓRΓ_R = (168 ±\pm 24 ±\pm 39) MeV is observed with a combined statistical significance of 7.6σσ. The measured resonance parameters suggest it can be identified as the ϕ(2170)ϕ(2170), thus the results provide valuable input to understand the internal nature of this state.

Measurement of ΛΛ baryon polarization in e+e−→ΛΛˉe^+e^-\rightarrowΛ\barΛ at s=3.773\sqrt{s} = 3.773 GeV

Using a data sample of ψ(3770)ψ(3770) events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 fb−1^{-1}, we report a measurement of ΛΛ spin polarization in e+e−→ΛΛˉe^+e^-\rightarrowΛ\barΛ at s=3.773\sqrt{s} = 3.773 GeV. The significance of polarization is found to be 2σσ including the systematic uncertainty, which implies a zero phase between the transition amplitudes of the ΛΛˉΛ\barΛ helicity states. This phase can be interpreted in terms of psionic form factors, and is determined to be ΔΦΨΔΦ^Ψ = ΦEΨ−ΦMΨΦ^Ψ_{E} - Φ^Ψ_{M} = (71−46+66(71^{+66}_{-46} ±\pm 5)∘^{\circ}. Similarly, the ratio between the form factors is found to be RψR^ψ = ∣GEΨ/GMΨ∣|G^Ψ_{E}/G^Ψ_{M}| = 0.48−0.07+0.120.48^{+0.12}_{-0.07} ±\pm 0.04. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic.

Measurement of the D→K−π+π+π−D \to K^-π^+π^+π^- and D→K−π+π0D \to K^-π^+π^0 coherence factors and average strong-phase differences in quantum-correlated DDˉ{D\bar{D}} decays

The decays D→K−π+π+π−D\to K^-π^+π^+π^- and D→K−π+π0D \to K^-π^+π^0 are studied in a sample of quantum-correlated DDˉD\bar{D} pairs produced through the process e+e−→ψ(3770)→DDˉe^+e^- \to ψ(3770) \to D\bar{D}, exploiting a data set collected by the BESIII experiment that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb−1^{-1}. Here DD indicates a quantum superposition of a D0D^0 and a Dˉ0\bar{D}^0 meson. By reconstructing one neutral charm meson in a signal decay, and the other in the same or a different final state, observables are measured that contain information on the coherence factors and average strong-phase differences of each of the signal modes. These parameters are critical inputs in the measurement of the angle γγ of the Unitarity Triangle in B−→DK−B^- \to DK^- decays at the LHCb and Belle II experiments. The coherence factors are determined to be RK3π=0.52−0.10+0.12R_{K3π}=0.52^{+0.12}_{-0.10} and RKππ0=0.78±0.04R_{Kππ^0}=0.78 \pm 0.04, with values for the average strong-phase differences that are δDK3π=(167−19+31)∘δ_D^{K3π}=\left(167^{+31}_{-19}\right)^\circ and δDKππ0=(196−15+14)∘δ_D^{Kππ^0}=\left(196^{+14}_{-15}\right)^\circ, where the uncertainties include both statistical and systematic contributions. The analysis is re-performed in four bins of the phase-space of the D→K−π+π+π−D \to K^-π^+π^+π^- to yield results that will allow for a more sensitive measurement of γγ with this mode, to which the BESIII inputs will contribute an uncertainty of around 6∘^\circ.

Using 2.93 fb−12.93\,\rm fb^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773\,GeV with the BESIII detector, we present a measurement of the branching fraction of the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed (DCS) decay D0→K+π−π0D^0\to K^+π^-π^0 and a search for the DCS decay D0→K+π−π0π0D^0\to K^+π^-π^0π^0. The branching fraction of D0→K+π−π0D^0\to K^+π^-π^0 is determined to be [3.13−0.56+0.60(stat)±0.09(syst)]×10−4[3.13^{+0.60}_{-0.56}({\rm stat}) \pm 0.09({\rm syst})] \times 10^{-4}. No signal is observed for D0→K+π−π0π0D^0\to K^+π^-π^0π^0 and an upper limit of 3.6×10−43.6 \times 10^{-4} is set on the branching fraction at the 90\% C.L. We combine these results with the world-average branching fractions of their counterpart Cabibbo-favored decays to determine the ratios of the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed over the Cabibbo-favored branching fractions, B(D0→K+π−π0)/B(D0→K−π+π0)=(0.22±0.04)%{\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^+π^-π^0)/{\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^-π^+π^0)=(0.22\pm 0.04)\%~and B(D0→K+π−π0π0)/B(D0→K−π+π0π0)<0.40%{\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^+π^-π^0π^0)/{\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^-π^+π^0π^0)<0.40\% at the 90\% C.L., which correspond to (0.75±0.14)tan⁡4θC(0.75\pm 0.14)\tan^{4} θ_C~and 1.37×tan⁡4θC1.37\times \tan^{4} θ_C, respectively, where θCθ_C is the Cabibbo angle.

Measurement of the total and leptonic decay widths of the J/ψJ/ψ resonance with an energy scan method at BESIII

Using e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data sets collected with the BESIII detector, we measure the cross sections of the processes e+e−→e+e−e^+e^- \to e^+e^- and e+e−→μ+μ−e^+e^- \to μ^+μ^- at fifteen center-of-mass energy points in the vicinity of the J/ψJ/ψ resonance. By a simultaneous fit to the measured, center-of-mass energy dependent cross sections of the two processes, the combined quantities ΓeeΓee/ΓtotΓ_{ee} Γ_{ee} / Γ_{\rm tot} and ΓeeΓμμ/ΓtotΓ_{ee} Γ_{μμ} / Γ_{\rm tot} are determined to be (0.346±0.0090.346 \pm 0.009) and (0.335±0.0060.335 \pm 0.006) keV, respectively, where ΓeeΓ_{ee}, ΓμμΓ_{μμ}, and ΓtotΓ_{\rm tot} are the electronic, muonic, and total decay widths of the J/ψJ/ψ resonance, respectively. Using the resultant ΓeeΓμμ/ΓtotΓ_{ee} Γ_{μμ} / Γ_{\rm tot} and ΓeeΓee/ΓtotΓ_{ee} Γ_{ee} / Γ_{\rm tot}, the ratio Γee/ΓμμΓ_{ee} / Γ_{μμ} is calculated to be 1.031±0.0151.031 \pm 0.015, which is consistent with the expectation of lepton universality within about two standard deviations. Assuming lepton universality and using the branching fraction of the J/ψJ/ψ leptonic decay measured by BESIII in 2013, ΓtotΓ_{\rm tot} and ΓllΓ_{ll} are determined to be (93.0±2.193.0 \pm 2.1) and (5.56±0.115.56 \pm 0.11) keV, respectively, where ΓllΓ_{ll} is the average leptonic decay width of the J/ψJ/ψ resonance.

The results are B(D0→KS0π0π0π0)=(7.64±0.30±0.29)×10−3{\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^0_Sπ^0π^0π^0 )=( 7.64\pm 0.30\pm 0.29)\times 10^{-3}, B(D0→K−π+π0π0π0)=(9.54±0.30±0.31)×10−3{\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^-π^+π^0π^0π^0 )=( 9.54\pm 0.30\pm 0.31)\times 10^{-3}, B(D0→KS0π+π−π0π0)=(12.66±0.45±0.43)×10−3{\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^0_Sπ^+π^-π^0π^0)=(12.66\pm 0.45\pm 0.43)\times 10^{-3}, B(D+→KS0π+π0π0)=(29.04±0.62±0.87)×10−3{\mathcal B}(D^+\to K^0_Sπ^+π^0π^0 )=(29.04\pm 0.62\pm 0.87)\times 10^{-3}, B(D+→KS0π+π+π−π0)=(15.28±0.57±0.60)×10−3{\mathcal B}(D^+\to K^0_Sπ^+π^+π^-π^0)=(15.28\pm 0.57\pm 0.60)\times 10^{-3}, B(D+→KS0π+π0π0π0)=(5.54±0.44±0.32)×10−3{\mathcal B}(D^+\to K^0_Sπ^+π^0π^0π^0)=( 5.54\pm 0.44\pm 0.32)\times 10^{-3}, B(D+→K−π+π+π0π0)=(4.95±0.26±0.19)×10−3{\mathcal B}(D^+\to K^-π^+π^+π^0π^0 )=( 4.95\pm 0.26\pm 0.19)\times 10^{-3}, B(D0→KS0KS0π0)<1.57×10−4{\mathcal B}({D^0\to K^0_S K^0_Sπ^0}) < 1.57 \times 10^{-4} at the 90\% confidence level. Here the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones systematic. The newly studied decays greatly enrich the knowledge of the D→KˉπππD\to \bar Kπππ and D→KˉππππD\to \bar Kππππ hadronic decays, and open a bridge to access more two-body hadronic DD decays containing scalar, vector, axial and tensor mesons in the charm sector.

Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 11.3 fb−1\rm fb^{-1} collected at center-of-mass energies from 4.234.23 to 4.704.70 GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the product of the e+e−→π+π−ψ2(3823)e^+e^-\to π^+π^-ψ_2(3823) cross section and the branching fraction B[ψ2(3823)→γχc1]\mathcal{B}[ψ_2(3823)\to γχ_{c1}]. For the first time, resonance structure is observed in the cross section line shape of e+e−→π+π−ψ2(3823)e^+e^-\to π^+π^-ψ_2(3823) with significances exceeding 5σ5σ. A fit to data with two coherent Breit-Wigner resonances modeling the s\sqrt{s}-dependent cross section yields M(R1)=4406.9±17.2±4.5M(R_1)=4406.9\pm 17.2\pm 4.5 MeV/c2c^2, Γ(R1)=128.1±37.2±2.3Γ(R_1)=128.1\pm 37.2\pm 2.3 MeV, and M(R2)=4647.9±8.6±0.8M(R_2)=4647.9\pm 8.6\pm 0.8 MeV/c2c^2, Γ(R2)=33.1±18.6±4.1Γ(R_2)=33.1\pm 18.6\pm 4.1 MeV. Though weakly disfavored by the data, a single resonance with M(R)=4417.5±26.2±3.5M(R)=4417.5\pm26.2\pm3.5 MeV/c2c^2, Γ(R)=245±48±13Γ(R)=245\pm48\pm13 MeV is also possible to interpret data. Observation of the electromagnetic Dalitz decay D∗0→D0e+e−D^{\ast 0}\to D^{0}e^{+}e^{-}

Based on 3.19 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- collision data accumulated at the center-of-mass energy 4.178 GeV with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, the electromagnetic Dalitz decay D∗0→D0e+e−D^{\ast 0}\to D^{0}e^{+}e^{-} is observed for the first time with a statistical significance of 13.2σ13.2σ. The ratio of the branching fraction of D∗0→D0e+e−D^{\ast 0}\to D^{0}e^{+}e^{-} to that of D∗0→D0γD^{\ast 0}\to D^{0} γ is measured to be (11.08±0.76±0.49)×10−3(11.08\pm0.76\pm0.49)\times 10^{-3}. By using the world average value of the branching fraction of D∗0→D0γD^{\ast 0}\to D^{0} γ, the branching fraction of D∗0→D0e+e−D^{\ast 0}\to D^{0}e^{+}e^{-} is determined to be (3.91±0.27±0.17±0.10)×10−3(3.91\pm0.27\pm0.17\pm0.10)\times 10^{-3}, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third external branching fractions.

Observation of the Singly Cabibbo-Suppressed Decay Λc+→nπ+Λ_{c}^{+} \to nπ^{+}

The singly Cabibbo-suppressed decay Λc+→nπ+Λ_{c}^{+} \to nπ^{+} is observed for the first time with a statistical significance of 7.3σ7.3σ by using 3.9 fb−1\mathrm{fb}^{-1} of e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collision data collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.612 and 4.699 GeV with the BESIII detector at BEPCII. The branching fraction of Λc+→nπ+Λ_{c}^{+} \to nπ^{+} is measured to be (6.6±1.2stat±0.4syst)×10−4(6.6\pm1.2_{\rm stat}\pm0.4_{\rm syst})\times 10^{-4}. By taking the upper limit of branching fractions of Λc+→pπ0Λ_{c}^{+} \to pπ^0 from the Belle experiment, the ratio of branching fractions between Λc+→nπ+Λ_{c}^{+} \to nπ^{+} and Λc+→pπ0Λ_{c}^{+} \to pπ^0 is calculated to be larger than 7.2 at the 90% confidence level, which disagrees with the current predictions of available phenomenological models. In addition, the branching fractions of the Cabibbo-favored decays Λc+→Λπ+Λ_{c}^{+} \to Λπ^{+} and Λc+→Σ0π+Λ_{c}^{+} \to Σ^{0}π^{+} are measured to be (1.31±0.08stat±0.05syst)×10−2(1.31\pm0.08_{\rm stat}\pm0.05_{\rm syst})\times 10^{-2} and (1.22±0.08stat±0.07syst)×10−2(1.22\pm0.08_{\rm stat}\pm0.07_{\rm syst})\times 10^{-2}, respectively, which are consistent with previous results.

Scintillation yield from electronic and nuclear recoils in superfluid 4^4He

Superfluid 4^4He is a promising target material for direct detection of light (<< 1 GeV) dark matter. Possible signal channels available for readout in this medium include prompt photons, triplet excimers, and roton and phonon quasiparticles. The relative yield of these signals has implications for the sensitivity and discrimination power of a superfluid 4^4He dark matter detector. Using a 16~cm3^3 volume of 1.75~K superfluid 4^4He read out by six immersed photomultiplier tubes, we measured the scintillation from electronic recoils ranging between 36.3 and 185 keVee_\mathrm{ee}, yielding a mean signal size of 1.25−0.03+0.031.25^{+0.03}_{-0.03}~phe/keVee_\mathrm{ee}, and nuclear recoils from 53.2 to 1090 keVnr_\mathrm{nr}. We compare the results of our relative scintillation yield measurements to an existing semiempirical model based on helium-helium and electron-helium interaction cross sections. We also study the behavior of delayed scintillation components as a function of recoil type and energy, a further avenue for signal discrimination in superfluid 4^4He.

Weak phases and CP-symmetry tests in sequential decays of entangled double-strange baryons

Using a sample of 1.31×1091.31\times10^9 J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector at the electron-positron collider BEPCII, we analyse the full J/ψ→J/ψ\to Ξ−Ξ‾+Ξ^-\overlineΞ^+, Ξ−→Λπ−Ξ^-\to Λπ^-, Λ→pπ−Λ\to pπ^-, Ξ‾+→Λ‾π+\overlineΞ^+\to\overlineΛπ^+, Λ‾→p‾π+\overlineΛ\to\overline{p}π^+ decay chain. A new method, exploiting the fact that the Ξ−Ξ‾+Ξ^-\overlineΞ^+ pair is entangled and sequentially decaying, and where the complete decay chains are reconstructed, is applied for the first time. This enables precision measurements of the decay parameters for the Ξ−→Λπ−Ξ^-\toΛπ^- decay (αΞα_Ξ, ϕΞϕ_Ξ) as well as the Ξ‾+→Λ‾π+\overlineΞ^+\to\overlineΛπ^+ decay (α‾Ξ\overlineα_Ξ, ϕ‾Ξ\overlineϕ_Ξ). From the decay parameters, two independent CP tests were performed, quantified by the observables ACPΞA_{\rm CP}^Ξ and ΔϕΞΔϕ_Ξ. Our results, ACPΞA_{\rm CP}^Ξ = (6.0±13.4±5.6)×10−3(6.0\pm13.4\pm5.6)\times10^{-3} and ΔϕΞ=(−4.8±13.7±2.9)×10−3 radΔϕ_Ξ= (-4.8\pm13.7\pm2.9)\times10^{-3}~{\rm rad}, are consistent with CP symmetry. Furthermore, our method enables a separation of strong and weak Ξ→ΛπΞ\toΛπ decay amplitudes. This results in the first direct measurement of the weak phase difference for any baryon decay. The result is found to be (ξP−ξS)=(1.2±3.4±0.8)×10−2(ξ_{P} - ξ_{S}) = (1.2\pm3.4\pm0.8)\times10^{-2} rad and is one of the most precise tests of CP symmetry for strange baryons. The strong phase difference is measured to be (δP−δS)=(−4.0±3.3±1.7)×10−2(δ_P - δ_S) = (-4.0\pm3.3\pm1.7)\times10^{-2} rad. In addition, we provide an independent measurement of the recently debated ΛΛ decay parameter, αΛ=0.757±0.011±0.008α_Λ = 0.757 \pm 0.011 \pm 0.008 . The ΛΛ‾Λ\overlineΛ asymmetry is measured to be ACPΛ=(−3.7±11.7±9.0)×10−3A_{\rm CP}^Λ = (-3.7\pm11.7\pm9.0)\times10^{-3}.

The correction also yields a reduced statistical uncertainty for the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, which now reads as aμππ,LO(600−900 MeV)=(368.2±1.5stat±3.3syst)×10−10a_μ^{ππ\mathrm{, LO}}(600 - 900\,\mathrm{MeV}) = (368.2 \pm 1.5_{\rm stat} \pm 3.3_{\rm syst})\times 10^{-10}. The central values of the cross section measurement and of aμππ,LOa_μ^{ππ\mathrm{, LO}}, as well as the systematic uncertainties remain unchanged.

Search for New Hadronic Decays of hch_c and Observation of hc→K+K−π+π−π0h_c\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{-}π^{0}

Ten hadronic final states of the hch_c decays are investigated via the process ψ(3686)→π0hcψ(3686)\rightarrow π^0 h_c, using a data sample of (448.1±2.9)×106(448.1 \pm 2.9) \times 10^6 ψ(3686)ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector. The decay channel hc→K+K−π+π−π0h_c\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{-}π^{0} is observed for the first time with a significance of 6.0σ6.0 σ. The corresponding branching fraction is determined to be B(hc→K+K−π+π−π0)=(3.3±0.6±0.6)×10−3\mathcal{B}(h_c\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{-}π^{0}) =(3.3 \pm 0.6 \pm 0.6)\times 10^{-3} (the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematical). Evidence for the decays hc→π+π−π0ηh_c\rightarrow π^{+} π^{-} π^{0} η and hc→KS0K±π∓π+π−h_c\rightarrow K^{0}_{S}K^{\pm}π^{\mp}π^{+}π^{-} is found with a significance of 3.6σ3.6 σ and 3.8σ3.8 σ, respectively. The corresponding branching fractions (and upper limits) are obtained to be B(hc→π+π−π0η)=(7.2±1.8±1.3)×10−3\mathcal{B}(h_c\rightarrow π^{+} π^{-} π^{0} η) =(7.2 \pm 1.8 \pm 1.3)\times 10^{-3} (<1.8×10−2)(< 1.8 \times 10^{-2}) and B(hc→KS0K±π∓π+π−)=(2.8±0.9±0.5)×10−3\mathcal{B}(h_c\rightarrow K^{0}_{S}K^{\pm}π^{\mp}π^{+}π^{-}) =(2.8 \pm 0.9 \pm 0.5)\times 10^{-3} (<4.7×10−3)(<4.7\times 10^{-3}). Upper limits on the branching fractions for the final states hc→K+K−π0h_c \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}, K+K−ηK^{+}K^{-}η, K+K−π+π−ηK^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{-}η, 2(K+K−)π02(K^{+}K^{-})π^{0}, K+K−π0ηK^{+}K^{-}π^{0}η, KS0K±π∓K^{0}_{S}K^{\pm}π^{\mp}, and ppˉπ0π0p\bar{p}π^{0}π^{0} are determined at a confidence level of 90\%.

High Resolution Spectroscopic Study of Λ10^{10}_ΛBe

Spectroscopy of a Λ10^{10}_ΛBe hypernucleus was carried out at JLab Hall C using the (e,e′K+)(e,e^{\prime}K^{+}) reaction. A new magnetic spectrometer system (SPL+HES+HKS), specifically designed for high resolution hypernuclear spectroscopy, was used to obtain an energy spectrum with a resolution of 0.78 MeV (FWHM). The well-calibrated spectrometer system of the present experiment using the p(e,e′K+)Λ,Σ0p(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})Λ,Σ^{0} reactions allowed us to determine the energy levels, and the binding energy of the ground state peak (mixture of 1−^{-} and 2−^{-} states) was obtained to be BΛ_Λ=8.55±\pm0.07(stat.)±\pm0.11(sys.) MeV. The result indicates that the ground state energy is shallower than that of an emulsion study by about 0.5 MeV which provides valuable experimental information on charge symmetry breaking effect in the ΛNΛN interaction.

Measurements of d2nd_{2}^{n} and A1nA_{1}^{n}: Probing the neutron spin structure

We report on the results of the E06-014 experiment performed at Jefferson Lab in Hall A, where a precision measurement of the twist-3 matrix element d2d_2 of the neutron (d2nd_{2}^{n}) was conducted. This quantity represents the average color Lorentz force a struck quark experiences in a deep inelastic electron scattering event off a neutron due to its interaction with the hadronizing remnants. This color force was determined from a linear combination of the third moments of the spin structure functions g1g_1 and g2g_2 on 3^{3}He after nuclear corrections had been applied to these moments. The kinematics included two average Q2Q^{2} bins of 3.23.2 GeV2^{2} and 4.34.3 GeV2^{2}, and Bjorken-xx 0.25≤x≤0.900.25 \leq x \leq 0.90 covering the DIS and resonance regions. We found d2nd_2^n to be small and negative for <Q2>=3.2<Q^{2}> = 3.2 GeV2^{2}, and smaller for <Q2>=4.3<Q^{2}> = 4.3 GeV2^{2}, consistent with a lattice QCD calculation. The twist-4 matrix element f2nf_{2}^{n} was extracted by combining our d2nd_{2}^{n} with the world data on Γ1n=∫01g1ndxΓ_{1}^{n} = \int_{0}^{1} g_{1}^{n} dx. We found f2nf_{2}^{n} to be roughly an order of magnitude larger than d2nd_{2}^{n}. Utilizing the extracted d2nd_{2}^{n} and f2nf_{2}^{n} data, we separated the color force into its electric and magnetic components, FEy,nF_{E}^{y,n} and FBy,nF_{B}^{y,n}, and found them to be equal and opposite in magnitude, in agreement with instanton model predictions but not with those from QCD sum rules. Additionally, we have extracted the neutron virtual photon-nucleon asymmetry A1nA_{1}^{n}, the structure function ratio g1n/F1ng_{1}^{n}/F_{1}^{n}, and the quark ratios (Δu+Δuˉ)/(u+uˉ)(Δu + Δ\bar{u})/(u + \bar{u}) and (Δd+Δdˉ)/(d+dˉ)(Δd + Δ\bar{d})/(d + \bar{d}). These results were found to be consistent with DIS world data and with the prediction of the constituent quark model but at odds with those of perturbative QCD at large xx.

Spectroscopy of the neutron-rich hypernucleus Λ7^{7}_ΛHe from electron scattering

The missing mass spectroscopy of the Λ7^{7}_ΛHe hypernucleus was performed, using the 7^{7}Li(e,e′K+)Λ7(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})^{7}_ΛHe reaction at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility Hall C. The ΛΛ binding energy of the ground state (1/2+^{+}) was determined with a smaller error than that of the previous measurement, being BΛB_Λ = 5.55 ±\pm 0.10(stat.) ±\pm 0.11(sys.) MeV. The experiment also provided new insight into charge symmetry breaking in p-shell hypernuclear systems. Finally, a peak at BΛB_Λ = 3.65 ±\pm 0.20(stat.) ±\pm 0.11(sys.) MeV was observed and assigned as a mixture of 3/2+^{+} and 5/2+^{+} states, confirming the "gluelike" behavior of ΛΛ, which makes an unstable state in 6^{6}He stable against neutron emission.

Double Spin Asymmetries of Inclusive Hadron Electroproductions from a Transversely Polarized 3He^3\rm{He} Target

We report the measurement of beam-target double-spin asymmetries (ALTA_\text{LT}) in the inclusive production of identified hadrons, e⃗ \vec{e}~+ 3He↑→h+X~^3\text{He}^{\uparrow}\rightarrow h+X, using a longitudinally polarized 5.9 GeV electron beam and a transversely polarized 3He^3\rm{He} target. Hadrons (π±π^{\pm}, K±K^{\pm} and proton) were detected at 16∘^{\circ} with an average momentum <<PhP_h>>=2.35 GeV/c and a transverse momentum (pTp_{T}) coverage from 0.60 to 0.68 GeV/c. Asymmetries from the 3He^3\text{He} target were observed to be non-zero for π±π^{\pm} production when the target was polarized transversely in the horizontal plane. The π+π^{+} and π−π^{-} asymmetries have opposite signs, analogous to the behavior of ALTA_\text{LT} in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering.

A Precision Measurement of the Neutron Twist-3 Matrix Element d2nd_2^n: Probing Color Forces

Double-spin asymmetries and absolute cross sections were measured at large Bjorken xx (0.25 ≤x≤ \le x \le 0.90), in both the deep-inelastic and resonance regions, by scattering longitudinally polarized electrons at beam energies of 4.7 and 5.9 GeV from a transversely and longitudinally polarized 3^3He target. In this dedicated experiment, the spin structure function g2g_2 on 3^3He was determined with precision at large xx, and the neutron twist-three matrix element d2nd_2^n was measured at <Q2>\left< Q^2\right> of 3.21 and 4.32 GeV2^2/c2c^2, with an absolute precision of about 10−510^{-5}. Our results are found to be in agreement with lattice QCD calculations and resolve the disagreement found with previous data at <Q2>=\left< Q^2\right> = 5 GeV2^2/c2c^2. Combining d2nd_2^n and a newly extracted twist-four matrix element, f2nf_2^n, the average neutron color electric and magnetic forces were extracted and found to be of opposite sign and about 30 MeV/fm in magnitude.

Measurement of the Target-Normal Single-Spin Asymmetry in Deep-Inelastic Scattering from the Reaction 3He↑(e,e′)X^{3}\mathrm{He}^{\uparrow}(e,e')X

We report the first measurement of the target-normal single-spin asymmetry in deep-inelastic scattering from the inclusive reaction 3^3He↑(e,e′)X^{\uparrow}\left(e,e' \right)X on a polarized 3^3He gas target. Assuming time-reversal invariance, this asymmetry is strictly zero in the Born approximation but can be non-zero if two-photon-exchange contributions are included. The experiment, conducted at Jefferson Lab using a 5.89 GeV electron beam, covers a range of 1.7<W<2.91.7 < W < 2.9 GeV, 1.0<Q2<4.01.0<Q^2<4.0 GeV2^2 and 0.16<x<0.650.16<x<0.65. Neutron asymmetries were extracted using the effective nucleon polarization and measured proton-to-3^3He cross section ratios. The measured neutron asymmetries are negative with an average value of (−1.09±0.38)×10−2(-1.09 \pm 0.38) \times10^{-2} for invariant mass W>2W>2 GeV, which is non-zero at the 2.89σ2.89σ level. Our measured asymmetry agrees both in sign and magnitude with a two-photon-exchange model prediction that uses input from the Sivers transverse momentum distribution obtained from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering.

Single Spin Asymmetries in Charged Kaon Production from Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering on a Transversely Polarized 3He^3{\rm{He}} Target

We report the first measurement of target single spin asymmetries of charged kaons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of electrons off a transversely polarized 3He^3{\rm{He}} target. Both the Collins and Sivers moments, which are related to the nucleon transversity and Sivers distributions, respectively, are extracted over the kinematic range of 0.1<<xbjx_{bj}<<0.4 for K+K^{+} and K−K^{-} production. While the Collins and Sivers moments for K+K^{+} are consistent with zero within the experimental uncertainties, both moments for K−K^{-} favor negative values. The Sivers moments are compared to the theoretical prediction from a phenomenological fit to the world data. While the K+K^{+} Sivers moments are consistent with the prediction, the K−K^{-} results differ from the prediction at the 2-sigma level.

Single Spin Asymmetries of Inclusive Hadrons Produced in Electron Scattering from a Transversely Polarized 3^3He Target

We report the first measurement of target single-spin asymmetries (AN_N) in the inclusive hadron production reaction, e e~+ 3He↑→h+X~^3\text{He}^{\uparrow}\rightarrow h+X, using a transversely polarized 3^3He target. The experiment was conducted at Jefferson Lab in Hall A using a 5.9-GeV electron beam. Three types of hadrons (π±π^{\pm}, K±\text{K}^{\pm} and proton) were detected in the transverse hadron momentum range 0.54 <pT<<p_T< 0.74 GeV/c. The range of xFx_F for pions was -0.29 <xF<<x_F< -0.23 and for kaons -0.25 <xF<<x_F<-0.18. The observed asymmetry strongly depends on the type of hadron. A positive asymmetry is observed for π+π^+ and K+\text{K}^+. A negative asymmetry is observed for π−π^{-}. The magnitudes of the asymmetries follow ∣Aπ−∣<∣Aπ+∣<∣AK+∣|A^{π^-}| < |A^{π^+}| < |A^{K^+}|. The K−^{-} and proton asymmetries are consistent with zero within the experimental uncertainties. The π+π^{+} and π−π^{-} asymmetries measured for the 3^3He target and extracted for neutrons are opposite in sign with a small increase observed as a function of pTp_T.

The experiments with the High Resolution Kaon Spectrometer at JLab Hall C and the new spectroscopy of Λ12B{}^{12}_Λ\text{B} hypernuclei

Since the pioneering experiment, E89-009 studying hypernuclear spectroscopy using the (e,e′K+)(e,e^{\prime}K^+) reaction was completed, two additional experiments, E01-011 and E05-115, were performed at Jefferson Lab. These later experiments used a modified experimental design, the "tilt method", to dramatically suppress the large electromagnetic background, and allowed for a substantial increase in luminosity. Additionally, a new kaon spectrometer, HKS (E01-011), a new electron spectrometer, HES, and a new splitting magnet were added to produce precision, high-resolution hypernuclear spectroscopy. These two experiments, E01-011 and E05-115, resulted in two new data sets, producing sub-MeV energy resolution in the spectra of Λ7He{}^{7}_Λ\text{He}, Λ12B{}^{12}_Λ\text{B} and Λ28Al{}^{28}_Λ\text{Al} and Λ7He{}^{7}_Λ\text{He}, Λ10Be{}^{10}_Λ\text{Be}, Λ12B{}^{12}_Λ\text{B} and Λ52V{}^{52}_Λ\text{V}. All three experiments obtained a Λ12B{}^{12}_Λ\text{B}, spectrum, which is the most characteristic pp-shell hypernucleus and is commonly used for calibration. Independent analyses of these different experiments demonstrate excellent consistency and provide the clearest level structure to date of this hypernucleus as produced by the (e,e′K+)(e,e^{\prime}K^+) reaction. This paper presents details of these experiments, and the extraction and analysis of the observed Λ12B{}^{12}_Λ\text{B} spectrum.

Direct Measurements of the Lifetime of Heavy Hypernuclei

The lifetime of a Lambda particle embedded in a nucleus (hypernucleus) decreases from that of free Lambda decay due to the opening of the Lambda N to NN weak decay channel. However, it is generally believed that the lifetime of a hypernucleus attains a constant value (saturation) for medium to heavy hypernuclear masses, yet this hypothesis has been difficult to verify. The present paper reports a direct measurement of the lifetime of medium-heavy hypernuclei produced with a photon-beam from Fe, Cu, Ag, and Bi targets. The recoiling hypernuclei were detected by a fission fragment detector using low-pressure multi-wire proportional chambers. The experiment agrees remarkably well with the only previously-measured single-species heavy-hypernucleus lifetime, that of Fe56_Lambda at KEK, and has significantly higher precision. The experiment disagrees with the measured lifetime of an unknown combination of heavy hypernuclei with 180<A<225 and, with a small statistical and systematic uncertainty, strongly favors the expected saturation of the lifetime decrease.

Measurement of pretzelosity asymmetry of charged pion production in Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering on a polarized 3^3He target

An experiment to measure single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive production of charged pions in deep-inelastic scattering on a transversely polarized 3^3He target was performed at Jefferson Lab in the kinematic region of 0.16<x<0.350.16<x<0.35 and 1.4<Q2<2.71.4<Q^2<2.7 GeV2{\rm GeV^2}. The pretzelosity asymmetries on 3^3He, which can be expressed as the convolution of the h1T⊥h^\perp_{1T} transverse momentum dependent distribution functions and the Collins fragmentation functions in the leading order, were measured for the first time. Using the effective polarization approximation, we extracted the corresponding neutron asymmetries from the measured 3^3He asymmetries and cross-section ratios between the proton and 3^3He. Our results show that for both π±π^{\pm} on 3^3He and on the neutron the pretzelosity asymmetries are consistent with zero within experimental uncertainties.

Measurement of R = sigma_L / sigma_T and the Separated Longitudinal and Transverse Structure Functions in the Nucleon Resonance Region

We report on a detailed study of longitudinal strength in the nucleon resonance region, presenting new results from inclusive electron-proton cross sections measured at Jefferson Lab Hall C in the four-momentum transfer range 0.2 < Q^2 < 5.5 GeV^2. The data have been used to accurately perform 167 Rosenbluth-type longitudinal / transverse separations. The precision R = sigma_L / sigma_T data are presented here, along with the first separate values of the inelastic structure functions F_1 and F_L in this regime. The resonance longitudinal component is found to be significant, both in magnitude and in the existence of defined mass peaks. Additionally, quark-hadron duality is here observed above Q^2 = 1 GeV^2 in the separated structure functions independently.

Nanoscale austenite reversion through partitioning, segregation, and kinetic freezing: Example of a ductile 2 GPa Fe-Cr-C steel

Austenite reversion during tempering of a Fe-13.6Cr-0.44C (wt.%) martensite results in an ultrahigh strength ferritic stainless steel with excellent ductility. The austenite reversion mechanism is coupled to the kinetic freezing of carbon during low-temperature partitioning at the interfaces between martensite and retained austenite and to carbon segregation at martensite-martensite grain boundaries. An advantage of austenite reversion is its scalability, i.e., changing tempering time and temperature tailors the desired strength-ductility profiles (e.g. tempering at 400°C for 1 min. produces a 2 GPa ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and 14% elongation while 30 min. at 400°C results in a UTS of ~ 1.75 GPa with an elongation of 23%). The austenite reversion process, carbide precipitation, and carbon segregation have been characterized by XRD, EBSD, TEM, and atom probe tomography (APT) in order to develop the structure-property relationships that control the material's strength and ductility.

Observation of the Helium 7 Lambda hypernucleus by the (e,e'K+) reaction

An experiment with a newly developed high-resolution kaon spectrometer (HKS) and a scattered electron spectrometer with a novel configuration was performed in Hall C at Jefferson Lab (JLab). The ground state of a neutron-rich hypernucleus, He 7 Lambda, was observed for the first time with the (e,e'K+) reaction with an energy resolution of ~0.6 MeV. This resolution is the best reported to date for hypernuclear reaction spectroscopy. The he 7 Lambda binding energy supplies the last missing information of the A=7, T=1 hypernuclear iso-triplet, providing a new input for the charge symmetry breaking (CSB) effect of ΛN potential.

Nuclear transparency and effective kaon-nucleon cross section from the A(e, e'K+) reaction

We have determined the transparency of the nuclear medium to kaons from A(e,e′K+)A(e,e^{'} K^{+}) measurements on 12^{12}C, 63^{63}Cu, and 197^{197}Au targets. The measurements were performed at the Jefferson Laboratory and span a range in four-momentum-transfer squared Q2^2=1.1 -- 3.0 GeV2^2. The nuclear transparency was defined as the ratio of measured kaon electroproduction cross sections with respect to deuterium, (σA/σDσ^{A}/σ^{D}). We further extracted the atomic number (AA) dependence of the transparency as parametrized by T=(A/2)α−1T= (A/2)^{α-1} and, within a simple model assumption, the in-medium effective kaon-nucleon cross sections. The effective cross sections extracted from the electroproduction data are found to be smaller than the free cross sections determined from kaon-nucleon scattering experiments, and the parameter αα was found to be significantly larger than those obtained from kaon-nucleus scattering. We have included similar comparisons between pion- and proton-nucleon effective cross sections as determined from electron scattering experiments, and pion-nucleus and proton-nucleus scattering data.

Semi-Inclusive Charged-Pion Electroproduction off Protons and Deuterons: Cross Sections, Ratios and Access to the Quark-Parton Model at Low Energies

A large set of cross sections for semi-inclusive electroproduction of charged pions (π±π^\pm) from both proton and deuteron targets was measured. The data are in the deep-inelastic scattering region with invariant mass squared W2W^2 > 4 GeV2^2 and range in four-momentum transfer squared 2<Q2<42 < Q^2 < 4 (GeV/c)2^2, and cover a range in the Bjorken scaling variable 0.2 < x < 0.6. The fractional energy of the pions spans a range 0.3 < z < 1, with small transverse momenta with respect to the virtual-photon direction, Pt2<0.2P_t^2 < 0.2 (GeV/c)2^2. The invariant mass that goes undetected, MxM_x or W', is in the nucleon resonance region, W' < 2 GeV. The new data conclusively show the onset of quark-hadron duality in this process, and the relation of this phenomenon to the high-energy factorization ansatz of electron-quark scattering and subsequent quark --> pion production mechanisms. The x, z and Pt2P_t^2 dependences of several ratios (the ratios of favored-unfavored fragmentation functions, charged pion ratios, deuteron-hydrogen and aluminum-deuteron ratios for π+π^+ and π−π^-) have been studied. The ratios are found to be in good agreement with expectations based upon a high-energy quark-parton model description. We find the azimuthal dependences to be small, as compared to exclusive pion electroproduction, and consistent with theoretical expectations based on tree-level factorization in terms of transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions. In the context of a simple model, the initial transverse momenta of dd quarks are found to be slightly smaller than for uu quarks, while the transverse momentum width of the favored fragmentation function is about the same as for the unfavored one, and both fragmentation widths are larger than the quark widths.

Single Spin Asymmetries in Charged Pion Production from Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering on a Transversely Polarized 3^3He Target

We report the first measurement of target single spin asymmetries in the semi-inclusive 3He(e,e′π±)X^3{He}(e,e'π^\pm)X reaction on a transversely polarized target. The experiment, conducted at Jefferson Lab using a 5.9 GeV electron beam, covers a range of 0.14 <x<< x < 0.34 with 1.3 <Q2<<Q^2< 2.7 GeV2^2. The Collins and Sivers moments were extracted from the azimuthal angular dependence of the measured asymmetries. The extracted π±π^\pm Collins moments for 3^3He are consistent with zero, except for the π+π^+ moment at x=0.34x=0.34, which deviates from zero by 2.3σσ. While the π−π^- Sivers moments are consistent with zero, the π+π^+ Sivers moments favor negative values. The neutron results were extracted using the nucleon effective polarization and the measured cross section ratio of proton to 3^3He, and are largely consistent with the predictions of phenomenological fits and quark model calculations.

Probing Quark-Gluon Interactions with Transverse Polarized Scattering

We have extracted QCD matrix elements from our data on double polarized inelastic scattering of electrons on nuclei. We find the higher twist matrix element \tilde{d_2}, which arises strictly from quark- gluon interactions, to be unambiguously non zero. The data also reveal an isospin dependence of higher twist effects if we assume that the Burkhardt-Cottingham Sum rule is valid. The fundamental Bjorken sum rule obtained from the a0 matrix element is satisfied at our low momentum transfer.

Hypernuclear Spectroscopy using the (e,e'K+) Reaction

A pioneering experiment in Lambda hypernuclear spectroscopy, undertaken at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jlab), was recently reported. The experiment used the high- precision, continuous electron beam at Jlab, and a special arrangement of spectrometer magnets to measure the spectrum from {nat}C and 7Li targets using the (e,e' K+)reaction. The 12B hypernuclear spectrum was previously published. This experiment is now reported in more detail, with improved results for the 12B hypernuclear spectrum. In addition, unpublished results of the 7He hypernuclear spectrum are also shown. This later spectrum indicates the need for a more detailed few-body calculation of the hypernucleus and the reaction process. The success of this experiment demonstrates that the (e,e'K+) reaction can be effectively used as a high resolution tool to study hypernuclear spectra, ant its use should be vigorously pursued.
