Exploration of the Muon g−2g-2 and Light Dark Matter explanations in NA64 with the CERN SPS high energy muon beam

We report on a search for a new Z′Z' (Lμ−LτL_μ-L_τ) vector boson performed at the NA64 experiment employing a high energy muon beam and a missing energy-momentum technique. Muons from the M2 beamline at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron with a momentum of 160 GeV/c are directed to an active target. A signal event is a single scattered muon with momentum << 80 GeV/c in the final state, accompanied by missing energy, i.e. no detectable activity in the downstream calorimeters. For a total statistic of (1.98±0.02)×1010(1.98\pm0.02)\times10^{10} muons on target, no event is observed in the expected signal region. This allows us to set new limits on part of the remaining (mZ′, gZ′)(m_{Z'},\ g_{Z'}) parameter space which could provide an explanation for the muon (g−2)μ(g-2)_μ anomaly. Additionally, our study excludes part of the parameter space suggested by the thermal Dark Matter relic abundance. Our results pave the way to explore Dark Sectors and light Dark Matter with muon beams in a unique and complementary way to other experiments.

A Search for Electron Neutrino Transitions to Sterile States in the BEST Experiment

The Baksan Experiment on Sterile Transitions (BEST) probes the gallium anomaly and its possible connections to oscillations between active and sterile neutrinos. Based on the Gallium-Germanium Neutrino Telescope (GGNT) technology of the SAGE experiment, BEST employs two zones of liquid Ga target to explore neutrino oscillations on the meter scale. Oscillations on this short scale could produce deficits in the 71^{71}Ge production rates within the two zones, as well as a possible rate difference between the zones. From July 5th to October 13th 2019, the two-zone target was exposed to a primarily monoenergetic, 3.4-MCi 51^{51}Cr neutrino source 10 times for a total of 20 independent 71^{71}Ge extractions from the two Ga targets. The 71^{71}Ge production rates from the neutrino source were measured from July 2019 to March 2020. At the end of these measurements, the counters were filled with 71^{71}Ge doped gas and calibrated during November 2020. In this paper, results from the BEST sterile neutrino oscillation experiment are presented in details. The ratio of the measured 71^{71}Ge production rates to the predicted rates for the inner and the outer target volumes are calculated from the known neutrino capture cross section. Comparable deficits in the measured ratios relative to predicted values are found for both zones, with the 4σ4 σ deviations from unity consistent with the previously reported gallium anomaly. If interpreted in the context of neutrino oscillations, the deficits give best fit oscillation parameters of Δm2=3.3−2.3+∞Δm^2=3.3^{+\infty}_{-2.3} eV2^2 and sin22θ=0.42−0.17+0.15^2 2θ=0.42^{+0.15}_{-0.17}, consistent with νe→νsν_e \rightarrow ν_s oscillations governed by a surprisingly large mixing angle.

Results from the Baksan Experiment on Sterile Transitions (BEST)

The Baksan Experiment on Sterile Transitions (BEST) was designed to investigate the deficit of electron neutrinos, νeν_{e}, observed in previous gallium-based radiochemical measurements with high-intensity neutrino sources, commonly referred to as the \textit{gallium anomaly}, which could be interpreted as evidence for oscillations between νeν_e and sterile neutrino (νsν_s) states. A 3.414-MCi \nuc{51}{Cr} νeν_e source was placed at the center of two nested Ga volumes and measurements were made of the production of \nuc{71}{Ge} through the charged current reaction, \nuc{71}{Ga}(νeν_e,e−^-)\nuc{71}{Ge}, at two average distances. The measured production rates for the inner and the outer targets respectively are ($54.9^{+2.5}_{-2.4}(\mbox{stat})\pm1.4 (\mbox{syst})$) and ($55.6^{+2.7}_{-2.6}(\mbox{stat})\pm1.4 (\mbox{syst})$) atoms of \nuc{71}{Ge}/d. The ratio (RR) of the measured rate of \nuc{71}{Ge} production at each distance to the expected rate from the known cross section and experimental efficiencies are Rin=0.79±0.05R_{in}=0.79\pm0.05 and Rout=0.77±0.05R_{out}= 0.77\pm0.05. The ratio of the outer to the inner result is 0.97±\pm0.07, which is consistent with unity within uncertainty. The rates at each distance were found to be similar, but 20-24\% lower than expected, thus reaffirming the anomaly. These results are consistent with νe→νsν_e \rightarrow ν_s oscillations with a relatively large Δm2Δm^2 (>>0.5 eV2^2) and mixing sin22θ^2 2θ (≈\approx0.4).

Search for pseudoscalar bosons decaying into e+e−e^+e^- pairs in the NA64 experiment at the CERN SPS

We report the results of a search for a light pseudoscalar particle aa that couples to electrons and decays to e+e−e^+e^- performed using the high-energy CERN SPS H4 electron beam. If such pseudoscalar with a mass ≃17\simeq 17 MeV exists, it could explain the ATOMKI anomaly. We used the NA64 data samples collected in the "visible mode" configuration with total statistics corresponding to 8.4×10108.4\times 10^{10} electrons on target (EOT) in 2017 and 2018. In order to increase sensitivity to small coupling parameter εε we used also the data collected in 2016-2018 in the "invisible mode" configuration of NA64 with a total statistics corresponding to 2.84×10112.84\times 10^{11} EOT. A thorough analysis of both these data samples in the sense of background and efficiency estimations was already performed and reported in our previous papers devoted to the search for light vector particles and axion-like particles (ALP). In this work we recalculate the signal yields, which are different due to different cross section and life time of a pseudoscalar particle aa, and perform a new statistical analysis. As a result, the region of the two dimensional parameter space ma−εm_a - ε in the mass range from 1 to 17.1 MeV is excluded. At the mass of the ATOMKI anomaly the values of εε in the range 2.1×10−4<ε<3.2×10−42.1 \times 10^{-4} < ε< 3.2 \times 10^{-4} are excluded.

Improved limits on a hypothetical X(16.7) boson and a dark photon decaying into e+e−e^+e^- pairs

The improved results on a direct search for a new X(16.7 MeV) boson which could explain the anomalous excess of e+e−e^+e^- pairs observed in the excited 8Be nucleus decays ("Berillium anomaly") are reported. Due to its coupling to electrons, the X boson could be produced in the bremsstrahlung reaction e-Z -> e-ZX by a high-energy beam of electrons incident on active target in the NA64 experiment at the CERN SPS and observed through its subsequent decay into e+e−e^+e^- pair. No evidence for such decays was found from the combined analysis of the data samples with total statistics corresponding to 8.4\times 10^{10} electrons on target collected in 2017 and 2018. This allows to set the new limits on the XX--e−e^- coupling in the range 1.2 \times 10^{-4} < ε_e < 6.8 \times 10^{-4}, excluding part of the parameter space favored by the Berillium anomaly. We also set new bounds on the mixing strength of photons with dark photons (A') from non-observation of the decay A′→e+e−A' \to e^+e^- of the bremsstrahlung A' with a mass below 24 MeV.

Search for Axionlike and Scalar Particles with the NA64 Experiment

We carried out a model-independent search for light scalar (s) and pseudoscalar axionlike (a) particles that couple to two photons by using the high-energy CERN SPS H4 electron beam. The new particles, if they exist, could be produced through the Primakoff effect in interactions of hard bremsstrahlung photons generated by 100 GeV electrons in the NA64 active dump with virtual photons provided by the nuclei of the dump. The a(s) would penetrate the downstream HCAL module, serving as shielding, and would be observed either through their a(s)→γγa(s)\toγγ decay in the rest of the HCAL detector or as events with large missing energy if the a(s) decays downstream of the HCAL. This method allows for the probing the a(s) parameter space, including those from generic axion models, inaccessible to previous experiments. No evidence of such processes has been found from the analysis of the data corresponding to 2.84×10112.84\times10^{11} electrons on target allowing to set new limits on the a(s)γγa(s)γγ-coupling strength for a(s) masses below 55 MeV.

Phonon Resonators : The Building Blocks of Nanocomposite Adjusting the Electron - Phonon Interaction

The nanocrystallite have the finite number of the oscillation modes. Their number increases proportionally to a cube of the characteristic size. Thus the oscillation spectrum of nanocrystal becomes discrete, and the separate modes of oscillations does not interact with each other, that considerably strengthens all phonon modulated processes in a crystal. Covering of such a nanocrystallite with the shielding surface of a material with the higher nuclear weight will allow to create the phonon resonators whose oscillation modes will represent the standing waves and, will be amplified by the resonant manner. The composites made of phonon resonators will allow to produce a perspective functional material for the electronics with adjustable structure and properties. Some new mechanism of HTS based on phonon resonators is proposed.
