Application of the single-channel, single-energy AA/PWA method to $K^{+} Λ$ photoproduction

The new single-channel, single-energy partial wave analysis method based on a simultaneous use of amplitude and partial wave analysis called AA/PWA, developed and tested on $η$ photoproduction in ref. Svarc et al, PRC 102, 064609 (2020), is applied to the $K^{+} Λ$ photoproduction for the center-of-mass energy range of 1625 MeV $< W <$ 2296 MeV. A complete set of multipoles has been created. The advantages of the method have been confirmed, and a comparison with the only existing single-energy partial wave analysis of $K^{+} Λ$ photoproduction given in refs. Anisovich et al PRL 119 062004 (2017) and Anisovich et al Eur. Phys. J. A 53: 242 (2017) is presented. We confirm the size and shape of Bonn-Gatchina multipoles, but we do not confirm the unambiguous interpretation of the structure in the $M_{1-}$ multipole as a $N(1880) \frac{1}{2}^{+}$ resonance. The decisive role of the self-consistency of the world database is emphasized.

Amplitude- and truncated partial-wave analyses combined: A novel, almost theory-independent single-channel method for extracting photoproduction multipoles directly from measured data

Amplitude- and truncated partial-wave analyses are combined into a single procedure and a novel, almost theory-independent single-channel method for extracting multipoles directly from measured data is developed. In practice, we have created a two-step procedure which is fitted to the same data base: in the first step we perform an energy independent amplitude analysis where continuity is achieved by constraining the amplitude phase, and the result of this first step is then taken as a constraint for the second step where a constrained, energy independent, truncated partial-wave analysis is done. The method is tested on the world collection of data for $η$ photoproduction, and the obtained fit-results are very good. The sensitivity to different possible choices of amplitude phase is investigated and it is demonstrated that the present data base is insensitive to notable phase changes, due to an incomplete database. New measurements are recommended to remedy the problem.

The complete experiment for photoproduction of pseudoscalar mesons in a truncated partial wave analysis

The complete experiment problem in the truncated partial wave analysis of pseudoscalar meson photoproduction with suppressed t-channel exchanges is investigated. The focus is set to ambiguities of the group S observables with the unpolarized differential cross section, $σ_0$, and the three single-spin observables, $Σ$, $T$ and $P$. For this purpose, the approach and formalism already worked out by Omelaenko in 1981 is revisited in this work. A numerical study using multipoles of the PWA solution MAID2007 shows how only one additional double polarization observable can resolve all ambiguities. Therefore, the possibility emerges to perform a complete experiment with only five observables.

$η$ MAID-2015: update with new data and new resonances

Recent data for $η$ and $η\prime$ photoproduction on protons obtained by the A2 Collaboration at MAMI are presented. The total cross section for $η$ photoproduction demonstrates a cusp at the energy corresponding to the $η\prime$ threshold. The new data and existing data from GRAAL, CBELSA/TAPS, and CLAS collaborations have been analyzed by an expansion in terms of associated Legendre polynomials. %A Legendre decomposition shows the sensitivity to small partial-wave contributions. The isobar model $η$MAID updated with $η\prime$ channel and new resonances have been used to fit the new data. The new solution $η$MAID-2015 reasonably good describes the data in the photon beam energy region up to 3.7 GeV.

Baryon transition form factors at the pole

Electromagnetic resonance properties are uniquely defined at the pole and do not depend on the separation of the resonance from background or the decay channel. Photon-nucleon branching ratios are nowadays often quoted at the pole, and we generalize the considerations to the case of virtual photons. We derive and compare relations for nucleon to baryon transition form factors both for the Breit-Wigner and the pole positions. Using the MAID2007 and SAID SM08 partial wave analyses of pion electroproduction data, we compare the $G_M$, $G_E$, and $G_C$ form factors for the $Δ(1232)$ resonance excitation at the Breit-Wigner resonance and pole positions up to $Q^2=5$ GeV$^2$. We also explore the $E/M$ and $S/M$ ratios as functions of $Q^2$. For pole and residue extraction, we apply the Laurent + Pietarinen method.

The Impact of New Polarization Data from Bonn, Mainz and Jefferson Laboratory on $γp \to πN$ Multipoles

New data on pion-photoproduction off the proton have been included in the partial wave analyses Bonn-Gatchina and SAID and in the dynamical coupled-channel approach Jülich-Bonn. All reproduce the recent new data well: the double polarization data for E, G, H, P and T in $γp \to π^0 p$ from ELSA, the beam asymmetry $Σ$ for $γp \to π^0 p$ and $π^+ n$ from Jefferson Laboratory, and the precise new differential cross section and beam asymmetry data $Σ$ for $γp \to π^0 p$ from MAMI. The new fit results for the multipoles are compared with predictions not taking into account the new data. The mutual agreement is improved considerably but still far from being perfect.

First measurement of target and beam-target asymmetries in the $γp\to π^0ηp$ reaction

The first data on target and beam-target asymmetries for the $γp\toπ^0ηp$ reaction at photon energies from 1050 up to 1450 MeV are presented. The measurements were performed using the Crystal Ball and TAPS detector setup at the Glasgow tagged photon facility of the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The general assumption that the reaction is dominated by the $Δ3/2^-$ amplitude is confirmed. The data are in particular sensitive to small contributions from other partial waves.

Measurement of pi^0 photoproduction on the proton at MAMI C

Differential cross sections for the gamma p -> pi^0 p reaction have been measured with the A2 tagged-photon facilities at the Mainz Microtron, MAMI C, up to the center-of-mass energy W=1.9 GeV. The new results, obtained with a fine energy and angular binning, increase the existing quantity of pi^0 photoproduction data by ~47%. Owing to the unprecedented statistical accuracy and the full angular coverage, the results are sensitive to high partial-wave amplitudes. This is demonstrated by the decomposition of the differential cross sections in terms of Legendre polynomials and by further comparison to model predictions. A new solution of the SAID partial-wave analysis obtained after adding the new data into the fit is presented.

Measurements of Double-Polarized Compton Scattering Asymmetries and Extraction of the Proton Spin Polarizabilities

The spin polarizabilities of the nucleon describe how the spin of the nucleon responds to an incident polarized photon. The most model-independent way to measure the nucleon spin polarizabilities is through polarized Compton scattering. Double-polarized Compton scattering asymmetries on the proton were measured in the $Δ(1232)$ region using circularly polarized incident photons and a transversely polarized proton target at the Mainz Microtron. Fits to asymmetry data were performed using a dispersion model calculation and a baryon chiral perturbation theory calculation, and a separation of all four proton spin polarizabilities in the multipole basis was achieved. The analysis based on a dispersion model calculation yields $γ_{E1E1} = -3.5 \pm 1.2$, $γ_{M1M1}= 3.16 \pm 0.85$, $γ_{E1M2} = -0.7 \pm 1.2$, and $γ_{M1E2} = 1.99 \pm 0.29$, in units of $10^{-4}$ fm$^4$.

Pion photo- and electroproduction and the chiral MAID interface

We discuss the extended on-mass-shell scheme for manifestly Lorentz-invariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. We present a calculation of pion photo- and electroproduction up to and including order $q^4$. The low-energy constants have been fixed by fitting experimental data in all available reaction channels. Our results can be accessed via a web interface, the so-called chiral MAID (http://www.kph.uni-mainz.de/MAID/chiralmaid/). We explain how our program works and how it can be used for further analysis.

Electromagnetic transition form factors of the Roper resonance in effective field theory

We analyze the form factors of the electromagnetic nucleon-to-Roper-resonance transition in the framework of low-energy effective field theory. A systematic power-counting procedure is generated by applying the complex-mass scheme. Within this power counting we calculate the form factors to next-to-next-to-leading order and fit the results to empirical data.

Measurement of the transverse target and beam-target asymmetries in $η$ meson photoproduction at MAMI

We present new data for the transverse target asymmetry T and the very first data for the beam-target asymmetry F in the $\vec γ\vec p\toηp$ reaction up to a center-of-mass energy of W=1.9 GeV. The data were obtained with the Crystal-Ball/TAPS detector setup at the Glasgow tagged photon facility of the Mainz Microtron MAMI. All existing model predictions fail to reproduce the new data indicating a significant impact on our understanding of the underlying dynamics of $η$ meson photoproduction. The peculiar nodal structure observed in existing T data close to threshold is not confirmed.

Accurate Test of Chiral Dynamics in the \boldmath$\vecγ p \rightarrow π^0p$ Reaction

A precision measurement of the differential cross sections $dσ/dΩ$ and the linearly polarized photon asymmetry $Σ\equiv (dσ_\perp - dσ_\parallel) \slash (dσ_\perp + dσ_\parallel)$ for the $\vecγ p \rightarrow π^0p$ reaction in the near-threshold region has been performed with a tagged photon beam and almost $4π$ detector at the Mainz Microtron. The Glasgow-Mainz photon tagging facility along with the Crystal Ball/TAPS multi-photon detector system and a cryogenic liquid hydrogen target were used. These data allowed for a precise determination of the energy dependence of the real parts of the $S$- and all three $P$-wave amplitudes for the first time and provide the most stringent test to date of the predictions of Chiral Perturbation Theory and its energy region of agreement with experiment.

Baryon photo-decay amplitudes at the pole

We derive relations for baryon photo-decay amplitudes both for the Breit-Wigner and the pole positions. With an updated SAID partial wave analysis, technically similar to the earliest Virginia Tech analysis of photoproduction data, we compare photo-decay amplitudes at both resonance positions for a few selected nucleon resonances. Comparisons are made and a qualitative similarity, seen between the pole and Breit-Wigner values extracted by the Bonn-Gatchina group, is confirmed in the present study.

We fix the low-energy constants by fitting experimental data in all available reaction channels. Our results can be accessed via a web interface, the so-called chiral MAID. A Rosetta Stone Relating Conventions In Photo-Meson Partial Wave Analyses

A new generation of complete experiments in pseudoscalar meson photo-production is being pursued at several laboratories. While new data are emerging, there is some confusion regarding definitions of asymmetries and the conventions used in partial wave analyses (PWA). We present expressions for constructing asymmetries as coordinate-system independent ratios of cross sections, along with the names used for these ratios by different PWA groups. (This update reflects a recent change in the definition of an asymmetry as used by one group.)

Electromagnetic Excitation of Nucleon Resonances

Recent progress on the extraction of electromagnetic properties of nucleon resonance excitation through pion photo- and electroproduction is reviewed. Cross section data measured at MAMI, ELSA, and CEBAF are analyzed and compared to the analysis of other groups. On this basis, we derive longitudinal and transverse transition form factors for most of the four-star nucleon resonances. Furthermore, we discuss how the transition form factors can be used to obtain empirical transverse charge densities. Contour plots of the thus derived densities are shown for the Delta, Roper, S11, and D13 nucleon resonances.

P11 Resonances with Dubna-Mainz-Taipei Dynamical Model for pi-N Scattering and Pion Electromagnetic Production

We present the results on P11 resonances obtained with Dubna-Mainz-Taipei (DMT) dynamical model for pion-nucleon scattering and pion electromagnetic production. The extracted values agree well, in general, with PDG values. One pole is found corresponding to the Roper resonance and two more resonances are definitely needed in DMT model. We further find indication for a narrow P11 resonance at around 1700 MeV with a width of around 50 MeV in both pi-N and gamma-pi reactions.

Photoproduction of $η'$-mesons off the deuteron

Quasi-free photoproduction of $η'$ mesons off nucleons bound in the deuteron has been measured with the combined Crystal Barrel - TAPS detector. The experiment was done at a tagged photon beam of the ELSA electron accelerator in Bonn for incident photon energies from the production threshold up to 2.5 GeV. The $η'$-mesons have been detected in coincidence with recoil protons and recoil neutrons. The quasi-free proton data are in good agreement with the results for free protons, indicating that nuclear effects have no significant impact. The coincidence with recoil neutrons provides the first data for the $γn \rightarrow nη'$ reaction. In addition, also first estimates for coherent $η'$-production off the deuteron have been obtained. In agreement with model predictions, the total cross section for this channel is found to be very small, at most at the level of a few nb. The data are compared to model calculations taking into account contributions from nucleon resonances and $t$-channel exchanges.

Singularity structure of the pi N scattering amplitude in a meson-exchange model up to energies W < 2.0 GeV

Within the previously developed Dubna-Mainz-Taipei meson-exchange model, the singularity structure of the pi N scattering amplitudes has been investigated. For all partial waves up to F waves and c.m. energies up to W = 2 GeV, the T-matrix poles have been calculated by three different techniques: analytic continuation into the complex energy plane, speed-plot and the regularization method. For all 4-star resonances, we find a perfect agreement between the analytic continuation and the regularization method. We also find resonance poles for resonances that are not so well established, but in these cases the pole positions and residues obtained by analytic continuation can substantially differ from the results predicted by the speed-plot and regularization methods.

Study of the gp-->etap reaction with the Crystal Ball detector at the Mainz Microtron(MAMI-C)

The gp-->etap reaction has been measured with the Crystal Ball and TAPS multiphoton spectrometers in the energy range from the production threshold of 707 MeV to 1.4 GeV (1.49 =< W >= 1.87 GeV). Bremsstrahlung photons produced by the 1.5-GeV electron beam of the Mainz Microtron MAMI-C and momentum analyzed by the Glasgow Tagging Spectrometer were used for the eta-meson production. Our accumulation of 3.8 x 10^6 gp-->etap-->3pi0p-->6gp events allows a detailed study of the reaction dynamics. The gp-->etap differential cross sections were determined for 120 energy bins and the full range of the production angles. Our data show a dip near W = 1680 MeV in the total cross section caused by a substantial dip in eta production at forward angles. The data are compared to predictions of previous SAID and MAID partial-wave analyses and to thelatest SAID and MAID fits that have included our data.

Baryon Resonance Analysis from MAID

The unitary isobar model MAID2007 has been used to analyze the recent data of pion electroproduction. The model contains all four-star resonances in the region below W=2 GeV and both single-Q^2 and Q^2 dependent transition form factors could be obtained for the Delta, Roper, D13(1520), S11(1535), S31(1620), S11(1650), D15(1675), F15(1680) and P13(1720). From the complete world data base, including also pi- data on the neutron, also Q^2 dependent neutron form factors are obtained. For all transition form factors we also give convenient numerical parameterizations that can be used in other reactions. Furthermore, we show how the transition form factors can be used to obtain empirical transverse charge densities and our first results are given for the Roper, the S11 and D13 resonances.

Generalized sum rules of the nucleon in the constituent quark model

We study the generalized sum rules and polarizabilities of the nucleon in the framework of the hypercentral constituent quark model. We include in the calculation all the well known $3^*$ and $4^*$ resonances and consider all the generalized sum rules for which there are data available. To test the model dependence of the calculation, we compare our results to the results obtained in the harmonic oscillator CQM. We furthermore confront our results to the model-independent sum rules values and to the predictions of the phenomenological MAID model. The CQM calculations provide a good description of most of the presented generalized sum rules in the intermediate $Q^2$ region (above $\sim0.2$ GeV$^2$) while they encounter difficulties in describing these observables at low $Q^2$, where the effects of the pion cloud, not included in the present calculation, are expected to be important.

A reggeized model for eta and eta-prime photoproduction

A reggeized model for ηand η' photoproduction on the nucleon is presented. In this model, t-channel vector meson exchanges are described in terms of Regge trajectories to comply with the correct high energy behavior. We compare this reggeized model with an isobar model (η-MAID), where the t-channel exchanges are described by ρand ωpoles. Both models contain the same resonance contributions, and describe current γp \to ηp data up to E_γ^{lab} = 2 GeV quite well, but only the reggeized model can be successfully extended to higher energies. For the γp \to η' p reaction, the reggeized model is found to be able to give a satisfactory description. For the differential cross section data from SAPHIR, we find that the observed linear forward rise in cos(theta) near E_γ^{lab} = 1.6 GeV can be well described by the interference of an S11 resonance and the Regge trajectory exchanges without any need for an additional P-wave resonance.

Electroproduction of nucleon resonances

The unitary isobar model MAID has been extended and used for a partial wave analysis of pion photo- and electroproduction in the resonance region W < 2 GeV. Older data from the world data base and more recent experimental results from Mainz, Bates, Bonn and JLab for Q^2 up to 4.0 (GeV/c)^2 have been analyzed and the Q^2 dependence of the helicity amplitudes have been extracted for a series of four star resonances. We compare single-Q^2 analyses with a superglobal fit in a new parametrization of Maid2003 together with predictions of the hypercentral constituent quark model. As a result we find that the helicity amplitudes and transition form factors of constituent quark models should be compared with the analysis of bare resonances, where the pion cloud contributions have been subtracted.

Threshold pi^0 photo- and electro-production in a meson-exchange model

We show that, within a meson-exchange dynamical model describing well most of the existing pion electromagnetic production data up to the second resonance region, one is also able to obtain a good agreement with the pi^0 photo- and electroproduction data near threshold. In the case of pi^0 production, the effects of final state interaction in the threshold region are nearly saturated by single charge exchange rescattering. This indicates that in ChPT, it might be sufficient to carry out the calculation just up to one-loop diagrams for threshold neutral pion production.

Eta photoproduction

We present a combined analysis of the new eta photoproduction data for total and differential cross sections, target asymmetry and photon asymmetry. Using basic assumptions, this allows a model-independent extraction of the $E_{2-}$ and $M_{2-}$ multipoles as well as resonance parameters of the $D_{13}(1520)$ state. At higher energy, we show that the photon asymmetry is extremely sensitive to small multipoles that are excited by photons in the helicity 3/2 state. These could be, e.g., the $F_{15}(1680)$, the $F_{17}(1990)$, or the $G_{17}(2190)$ resonances.

Dispersion Theoretical Analysis of Pion Photoproduction at Threshold and in the Delta Region

A new partial wave analysis of pion photoproduction has been obtained in the framework of fixed-t dispersion relations valid form threshold up to 500 MeV. It is based on new Mainz data for π^{0} and π^{+} production off the proton and both older and more recent data from Bonn, Frascati and TRIUMF for π^{+} and π^{-}. At threshold we obtain a good agreement with the existing data for both charged and neutral pion production. In the resonance region we have precisely determined the electromagnetic properties of the Δ(1232) resonance, in particular the E2/M1 ratio R_{EM}=(-2.5 \pm 0.1) %. We show that a model independent resonance background subtraction is possible with the speed-plot technique and obtain the Δpole at W =(1211 - 50i) MeV and the E2/M1 ratio of the residues as R_Δ = - 0.035 - 0.046 i.

Multipole analysis of pion photoproduction based on fixed t dispersion relations and unitarity

We have analysed pion photoproduction imposing constraints from fixed t dispersion relations and unitarity. Coupled integral equations for the S and P wave multipoles were derived from the dispersion relations and solved by the method of Omnes and Muskhelishvili. The free parameters were determined by a fit to the most recent data for π^{+} and π^{0} production on the proton as well as π^{-} production on the neutron, in the energy We have analysed pion photoproduction imposing constraints from fixed t dispersion relations and unitarity. Coupled integral equations for the S and P wave multipoles were derived from the dispersion relations and solved by the method of Omnes and Muskhelishvili. The free parameters were determined by a fit to the most recent data for π^{+} and π^{0} production on the proton as well as π^{-} production on the neutron, in the energy range 160 MeV \leq E_γ \leq 420 MeV. The lack of high precision data on the neutron and of polarization observables leads to some limitations of our results. Especially the multipole M_{1-} connected with the Roper resonance P_{11}(1440) cannot be determined to the required precision. Our predictions for the threshold amplitudes are in good agreement with both the data and chiral perturbation theory. In the region of the Δ(1232) we have determined the ratio of electric quadrupole and magnetic dipole excitation. The position of the resonance pole is obtained in excellent agreement with pion-nucleon scattering, and the complex residues of the multipoles are determined with the speed-plot technique.

A dispersion theoretical approach to the threshold amplitudes of pion photoproduction

We give predictions for the partial wave amplitudes of pion photoproduction near threshold by means of dispersion relations at fixed t. The free parameters of this approach are determined by a fit to experimental data in the energy range 160 MeV $\le E_γ \le$ 420 MeV. The observables near threshold are found to be rather sensitive to the amplitudes in the resonance region, in particular to the $Δ$ (1232) and $N^*$ (1440). We obtain a good agreement with the existing threshold data for both charged and neutral pion production. Our predictions also agree well with the results of chiral perturbation theory, except for neutral pion production off the neutron.
