Exact versus Taylor-expanded energy density in the study of the neutron star crust-core transition

The importance of the fourth and higher order terms in the Taylor series expansion of the energy of the isospin asymmetric nuclear matter in the study of the neutron star crust-core phase transition is investigated using the finite range simple effective interaction. Analytic expressions for the evaluation of the second and fourth order derivative terms in the Taylor series expansion for any general finite range interaction of Yukawa, exponential or Gaussian form have been obtained. The effect of the nuclear matter incompressibility, symmetry energy and slope parameters on the predictions for the crust-core transition density is examined. The crustal moment of inertia is calculated and the prediction for the radius of the Vela pulsar is analyzed using different equations of state.

Complementarity of dark matter direct detection: the role of bolometric targets

We study how the combined observation of dark matter in various direct detection experiments can be used to determine the phenomenological properties of WIMP dark matter: mass, spin-dependent (SD) and spin-independent (SI) scattering cross section off nucleons. A convenient choice of target materials, including nuclei that couple to dark matter particles through a significantly different ratio of SD vs SI interactions, could break the degeneracies in the determination of those parameters that a single experiment cannot discriminate. In this work we investigate different targets that can be used as scintillating bolometers and could provide complementary information to germanium and xenon detectors. We observe that Al2O3 and LiF bolometers could allow a good reconstruction of the DM properties over regions of the parameter space with a SD scattering cross section as small as 10^(-5) pb and a SI cross section as small as 5x10^(-10) pb for a 50 GeV WIMP. In the case of a CaWO4 bolometer the area in which full complementarity is obtained is smaller but we show that it can be used to determine the WIMP mass and its SI cross section. For each target we study the required exposure and background.

Heralded entanglement between solid-state qubits separated by 3 meters

Quantum entanglement between spatially separated objects is one of the most intriguing phenomena in physics. The outcomes of independent measurements on entangled objects show correlations that cannot be explained by classical physics. Besides being of fundamental interest, entanglement is a unique resource for quantum information processing and communication. Entangled qubits can be used to establish private information or implement quantum logical gates. Such capabilities are particularly useful when the entangled qubits are spatially separated, opening the opportunity to create highly connected quantum networks or extend quantum cryptography to long distances. Here we present a key experiment towards the realization of long-distance quantum networks with solid-state quantum registers. We have entangled two electron spin qubits in diamond that are separated by a three-meter distance. We establish this entanglement using a robust protocol based on local creation of spin-photon entanglement and a subsequent joint measurement of the photons. Detection of the photons heralds the projection of the spin qubits onto an entangled state. We verify the resulting non-local quantum correlations by performing single-shot readout on the qubits in different bases. The long-distance entanglement reported here can be combined with recently achieved initialization, readout and entanglement operations on local long-lived nuclear spin registers, enabling deterministic long-distance teleportation, quantum repeaters and extended quantum networks.

Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov description of the deformed N = 28 region

Ground-state properties of neutron-rich $N \approx 28$ nuclei are described in the framework of Relativistic Hartree Bogoliubov (RHB) theory. The model uses the NL3 effective interaction in the mean-field Lagrangian, and describes pairing correlations by the pairing part of the finite range Gogny interaction D1S. Two-neutron separation energies and ground-state quadrupole deformations that result from fully self-consistent RHB solutions, are compared with available experimental data. The model predicts a strong suppression of the spherical N=28 shell gap for neutron-rich nuclei: the $1f7/2 \to fp$ core breaking results in deformed ground states. Shape coexistence is expected for neutron-rich Si, S and Ar isotopes.
