Observation of Algebraic Time Order for Two-Dimensional Dipolar Excitons

Emergence of algebraic quasi-long-range order is a key feature of superfluid phase transitions at two dimensions. For this reduced dimensionality interactions prevent Bose-Einstein condensation with true long range order, at any finite temperature. Here, we report the occurence of algebraic order in a strongly interacting quantum liquid formed by dipolar excitons confined in a bilayer semiconductor heterostructure. We observe a transition from exponential to algebraic decay of the excitons temporal coherence, accompanied by a universal scaling behaviour of the equation of state. Our results provide strong evidence for a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition in a multi-component boson-like system governed by strong dipolar interactions.

Low Temperature Electrostatic Force Microscopy of a Deep Two Dimensional Electron Gas using a Quartz Tuning Fork

Using an ultra-low temperature, high magnetic field scanning probe microscope, we have measured electric potentials of a deeply buried two dimensional electron gas (2DEG). Relying on the capacitive coupling between the 2DEG and a resonant tip/cantilever structure, we can extract electrostatic potential information of the 2DEG from the dynamics of the oscillator. We present measurements using a quartz tuning fork oscillator and a 2DEG with a cleaved edge overgrowth structure. The sensitivity of the quartz tuning fork as force sensor is demonstrated by observation of Shubnikov de Haas oscillations at a large tip-2DEG separation distance of more than 500 nm.

The role of the stress trap in polariton quasiequilibrium condensation in GaAs microcavities

Recent experiments have shown several effects indicative of Bose-Einstein condensation in polaritons in GaAs-based microcavity structures when a harmonic potential trap for the two-dimensional polaritons is created by applied stress. These effects include both real-space and momentum-space narrowing, first-order coherence, and onset of linear polarization above a particle density threshold. Similar effects have been seen in systems without traps, raising the question of how important the role of the trap is in these experiments. In this paper we present results for both trapped conditions and resonant, non-trapped conditions in the same sample. We find that the results are qualitatively different, with two distinct types of transitions. At low density in the trap, the polaritons remain in the strong-coupling regime while going through the threshold for onset of coherence; at higher density, there is a different threshold behavior which occurs with weak coupling and can be identified with lasing; this transition occurs both with and without a trap.
