Non-degenerate locally connected models for plane continua and Julia sets

Suppose that a XX is an \emph{unshielded} plane continuum (i.e., XX coincides with the boundary of the unbounded complementary component of XX). Then there exists a \emph{finest monotone} map m:X→Lm:X\to L, where LL is a locally connected continuum (i.e., m−1(y)m^{-1}(y) is connected for each y∈Ly\in L, and any monotone map φ:X→L′φ:X\to L' onto a locally connected continuum is a composition φ=φ′∘mφ=φ'\circ m where φ′:L→L′φ':L\to L' is monotone). Such finest locally connected model LL of XX is easier to understand because LL is locally connected (in particular it can be described by a picture) and represents the finest but still understandable decomposition of XX into possibly complicated but pairwise disjoint \emph{fibers} (point-preimages) of mm. However, in some cases (i.e., in case XX is indecomposable) LL is a singleton. In this paper we provide sufficient conditions for the existence of a non-degenerate model depending on the existence of certain subcontinua of XX and apply these results to the connected Julia sets of polynomials.

The combinatorial Mandelbrot set as the quotient of the space of geolaminations

We interpret the combinatorial Mandelbrot set in terms of \it{quadratic laminations} (equivalence relations ∼\sim on the unit circle invariant under σ2σ_2). To each lamination we associate a particular {\em geolamination} (the collection L∼\mathcal{L}_\sim of points of the circle and edges of convex hulls of ∼\sim-equivalence classes) so that the closure of the set of all of them is a compact metric space with the Hausdorff metric. Two such geolaminations are said to be {\em minor equivalent} if their {\em minors} (images of their longest chords) intersect. We show that the corresponding quotient space of this topological space is homeomorphic to the boundary of the combinatorial Mandelbrot set. To each equivalence class of these geolaminations we associate a unique lamination and its topological polynomial so that this interpretation can be viewed as a way to endow the space of all quadratic topological polynomials with a suitable topology.

Cubic Critical Portraits and Polynomials with Wandering Gaps

Thurston introduced $\si_d$-invariant laminations (where $\si_d(z)$ coincides with $z^d:\ucirc\to \ucirc$, d≥2d\ge 2) and defined \emph{wandering kk-gons} as sets $\T\subset \ucirc$ such that $\si_d^n(\T)$ consists of k≥3k\ge 3 distinct points for all n≥0n\ge 0 and the convex hulls of all the sets $\si_d^n(\T)$ in the plane are pairwise disjoint. He proved that $\si_2$ has no wandering kk-gons. Call a lamination with wandering kk-gons a \emph{WT-lamination}. In a recent paper it was shown that uncountably many cubic WT-laminations, with pairwise non-conjugate induced maps on the corresponding quotient spaces JJ, are realizable as cubic polynomials on their (locally connected) Julia sets. In the present paper we use a new approach to construct cubic WT-laminations with all of the above properties and the extra property that the corresponding wandering branch point of JJ has a dense orbit in each subarc of JJ (we call such orbits \emph{condense}), and to show that critical portraits corresponding to such laminations are uncountably dense in the space $\A_3$ of all cubic critical portraits.

Locally connected models for Julia sets

Let PP be a polynomial with a connected Julia set JJ. We use continuum theory to show that it admits a \emph{finest monotone map $\ph$ onto a locally connected continuum J∼PJ_{\sim_P}}, i.e. a monotone map $\ph:J\to J_{\sim_P}$ such that for any other monotone map ψ:J→J′ψ:J\to J' there exists a monotone map hh with $ψ=h\circ \ph$. Then we extend $\ph$ onto the complex plane $\C$ (keeping the same notation) and show that $\ph$ monotonically semiconjugates $P|_{\C}$ to a \emph{topological polynomial $g:\C\to \C$}. If PP does not have Siegel or Cremer periodic points this gives an alternative proof of Kiwi's fundamental results on locally connected models of dynamics on the Julia sets, but the results hold for all polynomials with connected Julia sets. We also give a criterion and a useful sufficient condition for the map $\ph$ not to collapse JJ into a point.

A fixed point theorem for branched covering maps of the plane

It is known that every homeomorphism of the plane has a fixed point in a non-separating, invariant subcontinuum. Easy examples show that a branched covering map of the plane can be periodic point free. In this paper we show that any branched covering map of the plane of degree with absolute value at most two, which has an invariant, non-separating continuum YY, either has a fixed point in YY, or YY contains a \emph{minimal (by inclusion among invariant continua), fully invariant, non-separating} subcontinuum XX. In the latter case, ff has to be of degree -2 and XX has exactly three fixed prime ends, one corresponding to an \emph{outchannel} and the other two to \emph{inchannels}.

The Julia sets of basic uniCremer polynomials of arbitrary degree

Let PP be a polynomial of degree dd with a Cremer point pp and no repelling or parabolic periodic bi-accessible points. We show that there are two types of such Julia sets JPJ_P. The \emph{red dwarf} JPJ_P are nowhere connected im kleinen and such that the intersection of all impressions of external angles is a continuum containing pp and the orbits of all critical images. The \emph{solar} JPJ_P are such that every angle with dense orbit has a degenerate impression disjoint from other impressions and JPJ_P is connected im kleinen at its landing point. We study bi-accessible points and locally connected models of JPJ_P and show that such sets JPJ_P appear through polynomial-like maps for generic polynomials with Cremer points.
